Pre-Show Stalwart
I usually don't reply because most threads on WZ are formulaic and moronic. This one, however, struck a chord with me.
I stopped watching wrestling when HBK retired at Mania. He was the last of the old guard to me, with the exception of Taker and sorta HHH and Jericho. The guys today just aren't that fun to watch unless you're a kid or a hardcore wrestling fan. My kid wanted to watch wrestling so I turned it on Monday for the first time in God-knows-how-long and it was Cena and Orton standing in the ring babbling about the belt, the stipulations for the next paperview, etc. Cena in particular is so incredibly flat and insulting in his persona and delivery that I can't bare it. He's TOO serious. He acts like every night is the "fight of his life". It's childish and insulting and listening to these two boring guys drone on and on without charisma made me long for the days when The Rock, Austin, and Hogan had people screaming so loud they could barely talk. They were that charismatic. I'm oldschool. When I watch my entertainment, I like to see people doing things that I can't do. Musicians, movie peeps, and even wrestlers. On the mic, I don't see that anymore in WWE.
BUT that's not the only thing. Sorry to power rant but to get back on topic, there was one other HUGE thing I noticed. Almost every single wrestler looks the same. They don't look like people who'd walk through an airport only to have people go "Who in the world is THAT?!" They look like a bunch of babyfaced buddies with the same expressions, same ring attire, and same half-baked personalities. Visually and aesthetically, you take one look at today's roster and you can tell these guys are all buddies. They all go clubbing and act like DB's after the show. They don't look like men. They look like a Frat House. These aren't men who were hardened by territories. Who paid dues in Japan, Mexico, and the indies before finding a gimmick that got them noticed and learning to be larger than life. These are the sons, grand sons, daughters, and FANS of the real wrestlers. I lasted about five minutes before turning it off and telling Nathan that if he wanted to watch wrestling, he could pop in an HBK or Flair dvd.
