TNA's Terrible Commentators

Getting Noticed By Management
Okay, so I love TNA (except Jarrett always trying to make himself central, Sting thinking he can still wrestle, and Scott Steiner in general), but who else agrees with me that the commentators absolutely need to tone it down?! I mean, the TNA talent is pulling off moves all the time and all Mike Tenay says is "he picks him up and drives him down to the mat". In addition, they always try to oversell everything!!! Sometimes I'm tempted to watch TNA with the volume at it's lowest.

Imagine how TNA would be if Tazz and Joey Styles - two of the most intelligent commentators around when it comes to identifying wrestling moves - were in the booth.

Anyone have suggestions for what should be done to TNA's ridiculous commentary team?

I have watched it while muted and it makes the show alot better.. I think my main problem is Mike Tenay, he is the worst. Is voice is annoying and he tries to be exciting but it sounds horrible. I think they should add Shane Douglas to the commentating and remove Tenay and maybe that can work.

Bring in Mike Goldberg from UFC, Im sure Spike could work out a deal for cross promotional work with Mike. I truely think they need to get away from the "WWE" style of announcing that they have adopted, and get back to actually calling the matches as if it was a real sport. Let Play by Play man do his job, and let the Color Commentator do the overselling and joke here and there. Id actually say put Mike Goldberg with Don "Cyrus" Callis.

Yeah, my primary problem is definitely the overselling and the fact that they can't really identify any of the moves. I did notice that there's actually no play-by-play man and no color commentator

I don't care for the commentators but I think Taz is just as bad. He does know the moves but he sounds like a bumbling idiot half the time.

i don't mind mike tenay's monotone commentary but i fucking hate don west. he is just annoying as hell.

And JBL sounds like an idiot all of the time. The only good announcer in the WWE is Ross. Uncle Jerry sounds like a dirty old man half the time.

That company sorely misses Heenan at the announce table

Totally opposite of me I can live with West but no Tenay, he is horrible to me

i like tenay. he was great as the THIRD announcer on Nitro...but the main call guy isnt a good position for him. note: theres hardly anyone with more knowledge about world wide wrestling holds and history than tenay. thats why he is great as a 2nd or 3rd guy.

west...man he SUCKED in the first few ppv's i saw of TNA. i hoped he would get better and kinda knew he would, and sure enough he did. too bad the cieling for his call ability was kinda low. i dont expect him to get better than he is now which isnt good.

To be honest I dont think they are THAT bad. Tenay is definately passable, there really isnt anyone else that can do PBP at the moment, who is on the market. West really does oversell alot of stuff, but then so did Lawler back in the day, although he has toned it down a hell of alot in the last few years. I dont think they are as bad as everyone makes out, I think eventually when Raven retires which might be sooner rather than later they coould move him in to do Colour Commentary, but for now I think they are pretty much stuck with the guys they have.

what do you expect?

JR and Jerry Lawler
Tazz and Styles

Tna got their own style and so they have their own commentary
if they have Styles and Tazz
then what is the difference between Tna and Wwe?

I would think you would go after Tony Schiavone, or be really creative and make a play for someone as talented as Steve MONGO McMichael. What about Lee Marshall or Lord Alfred Hayes? The possibilities are endless considering how terrible their announcers are right now.

I totally agree, with the addition of Angle you dont need a no talent commentator like Tenay calling his matches. There are alot of people out there that can do a better job

are you all kidding, all Jim ross does is yell, ill give it to you that don west is pretty annoying at times, but at least he doesn't say like JR " that sick son of a bitch..." mike tenay is the best there is, save for bobby heenan

I agree with the bad commentating, I'd dare say that neither of them no any names to any of the moves being performed.
I dont think they really do there homework, but now that Mike Tenay is off of the storyline crew maybe he'll focus more on his commentating duties.

I was also wondering, what ever happened to Tony Schiavone?
He was the voice of the NWA and WCW as was actually pretty good!

In all fairness Tenay's Wrestling knowledge seems to be pretty good. I was watching Impact today, and he managed to call an STO Take down by the right name, JR or Cole would never have gotten it. And like who, if there is such a better alternative then why havent TNA signed them already. The only person who was on the market would have been Joey Styles, why they didnt attempt to get him alot earlier I dont know he would have been a perfect fit for TNA.

Joey Styles is probably the best name for name commentator out there as far as moves go, and when do you ever see an STO in the WWE anyway?

I thought about posting this too but I was scared I would get flamed by a bunch of fans (didn't know if everyone thought it was the best announce team ever or something.) I just don't like this announce team, they make me feel like I am watching that old Battle Dome show or whatever, they remind me of the announce crew from that. I don't know why, cause I don't remember much about that show but these guys just sound like they would fit with that. They sound like they should announce saturday morning wrestling instead of primetime wrestling. I love just about everything else about TNA except for this.

I don't think it's that bad - Def better than smackdown! Raw's commentary is okay - I hat ethe king though just a cheap joke....but JR's a decent commentator as is Styles... I think TNA could do with a commentator more akin to the old Styles - lots of play by play and very little storytelling and a colour commentator like the new Styles - the opposite??? I dont mind them cause usually when I watch TNA it's for the wrestling and nothing else - like UFC (the commentary is rubbish there) whereas the wrestling action in wwe can sometimes be so boring that I haveto listen to the commentary....I'd like more play by play and accurate wrestling knowledge but dont think it really matters...

You actually make a really good point there, weather you meant to or not I dont know. But with TNA they rarely have to sell the matches because they are for the most part pretty good quality, so maybe thats why TNA Announcers seem to be overselling matches so much. With the WWE they often have to sell the matches especially on TV, with the Wrestlers not on the whole being as talented as the TNA Wrestlers. But on the other hand, TNA only have an Hour a week to sell their PPV's, and thats what its all about selling PPV's, so maybe the Announcers have to oversell Build to the PPV, to ensure more people buy them.

Sure Mike Tenay is bad, but Joey Styles is even worse. At least Tenay shows some emotions sometimes unlike Styles. I think the only problem is that they spend too much time promoting upcoming shows. If they ever go two hours, I think that will stop. Just give it some time. Tenay did a good job in WCW, he can do a good job as long as he doesn't have to promote shows every two seconds. As for Don West, I think he needs to be replaced. He doesn't know the names of any wrestling moves at all and his voice is just annoying. He's getting better, but I don't think he'll ever be good.

tenay and west are not at all bad, west screams a bit, but they both try and make it seem like you are seeing something special, lawler spends the whole show trying to find a good joke and 99% are stupid, and jim ross yelling "good god o mighty that son of a bitch broke him in half" got old the second time

You can't be serious when you say that about JR. He's possibly the best commentator of all time. Just because you're pro TNA doesn't mean that you have to be anti-WWE. TNA would kill to have JR and King over Tenay and West.
