Most annoying thing about WWE commentators - the "catchphrases"

In my opinion, the commentators are currently devaluing the product overall. Matt Striker is the only good thing going at present, King has lost his flavor, Cole has grown boxed-in by whoever is "coaching" him, Todd Grisham may be a decent interviewer but he's absolutely atrocious with a headset on and whoever is doing commentary on ECW, I'm sure they suck too (I don't watch 'em often enough to form a fair opinion).

Gone are the days where commentators were actually, I don't know, commentating on what the hell is happening in the match, relaying information about the ongoing storyline (if there is one), instead of trying to get themselves over (or whatever the hell is going on with the constant dropping of catchphrases).

The Michael Cole "vintage" thing was half-assed comedy material to start with and now... Damn it, they MUST be ribbing him, having him say it ALL. THE. FUCKING. TIME. It was fine when Undertaker did Old School, but now... it's just...

Even Mike Tenay is better. Even Don fucking West was better. Commentary - WWE, you're doing it wrong!

Remember Hell in a Cell with Taker and Foley? When Foley was thrown off the the top of the cage? I remember vividly what JR said. "He killed him, Oh My God he killed the son of a bitch.

"Good God almighty! Good God almighty! They killed him! - As God is my witness, he is broken in half!"

And later, when he went through the HIAC (the "unplanned" (?) bump), JR says "Good God! Good God!", King said "That's it, he's dead." and JR replied "Would somebody stop the damn match? Enough's enough!"

Just an FYI :)

If it hasnt been said "OH MY GOD".

And it really annoyed me when Michael Cole and JBL were commentating(and i dont know if this is a catchphrase but this annoyed me)and cole goes "He's rolling, John" because Cole says it fast and its sounds weird.

Striker to me is a breath of fresh air when it comes to commentating..
He knows what he's talking about, he has good wrestling knowledge (even though a few things he's claimed have been wrong) but he's actually known to correct himself at a later time.. kinda like if JR gets something wrong.. Also I like that he has certain heel qualities, like during that Piggie James storyline, you'd often hear him being on Michelle McCool's side more than Mickie James'.

Cole and Grisham really piss me off though.. Grisham is a lame ass, I remember a backstage promo With Cena, Hardy (Matt), Big Show and HBK, and Cena was hyping them all up then Grisham's like "I can do the robot!" and everyone's just like ".....riiiiight.."

He reminds of that guy in your group of friends that always tries to tell a joke but then gets nothing but cricket chirps... there's always one. But to Grisham's credit he doesn't really try to be funny while commentating..

Which brings me to Michael Cole.. The guy is getting worse and worse every week.. I hate his fake overexaggerated laughs whenever Hornswoggle does something kids find funny.. I hated his attempt to try and be funny when he won that slammy award for that time he blew chunks on Chris Jericho's shoes (which Jericho and Show actually made funny.. Not Cole).. and he's really taking advantage of that whole "VINTAGE!" quote.. I remember like 5-6 years ago, his quote was "he just his the modified (insert move here)!" everything was modified... "WOW CARLITO JUST HIT THAT MODIFIED BACK BREAKER!".. dude, they have names.. learn them.

Man I miss the days when Tazz would just put down Cole if he said something stupid..

I miss the days of Jim Ross and Paul Heyman, they were great together.

Michael Cole and Josh Matthews on NXT when they were arguing about Bryan was good. Things like that where the commentators express differening point of views (easily done with a heel and face announcer like JR and Heyman did) while simultaneously actually calling the match is gold to me. Doing play by play while being entertaining, but not entertaining enough to take away from the match is what I like to see.

People forget that it is very difficult to maintain a totally fresh commentary style when you are talking for two hours every single week. The tendency to catchphrase is something that has always existed. I always think it's a bit weird that people get on Michael Cole's back the way they do, yet totally ignore the fact that Gorilla Monsoon gave exactly the same commentary to every single match and Jim Ross is guaranteed to say "slobberknocker", "business has picked up" and various other things a hell of a lot more times than Cole says "vintage".

There isn't really anything you can do about it, because you want commentators to have some kind of a persona, but you just have to hope that they aren't overused and they aren't that bad. I think people are overly hard on today's commentators generally speaking, and this is one such area. I'd sooner have a commentator with a catchphrase than one who just blandly and boringly tells me what I can already see, which when you consider the amount of time they talk for, is pretty much the only alternative.

Someone mentioned it earlier, but one of the most annoying catchphrases for me is "the longest running weekly episodic television show"or whatever the exact words are. i really don't care.

The commentaters have millions of words in the english language but i think michael cole only knows about 8. it can get really frustrating. i even watched an episode of raw on mute a few weeks ago. i only really missed the miz promo.

The commentators really need to act like they care about what they do for a living.

Pretty much every commentator ever has had their good amount of catchphrases, JR has/had plenty, Joey Styles had "OH MY GOD!!!", back when King was 75% more entertaining he had "PUPPIES!!!", etc. I'll never understand why Cole gets all the hate for this, especially since the guy is really a good commentator who knows how to call the action, and obviously he doesn't come up with those lines by himself. I also think it's obvious by now that "Vintage" has become a running joke, just watch Cole's Slammy Award acceptance speech if you don't believe me on that one. To others he may be annoying, but to me he's underrated and honestly pretty hilarious when he gets over dramatic about stuff that the heels do. I think King is the real problem of the Raw announce team, the man has quite clearly lost his passion and it really shows.
