I'm not one of those guys flipping tables over the ending, but I think the mainstream coverage is interesting.

Fans were outraged on Twitter, but the reaction inside the arena was even more extreme. Fans chanted Bryan’s name for minutes after he was eliminated, and booed every other entrant as they came to the ring (including fan favorite and eventual winner Roman Reigns).

I think it's a little of both McMahon not understanding the new generation, and the oldest of the new generation holding onto the last of the old glory days and not welcoming change. It's not like this hasn't happened in the wrestling industry before, because it has.
