They have to be doing something right!

Sparky

Master of the Aussie kiss
Jonahs Brothers and Miley Cyrus that is.
(now before they start I can't stand either of the two but yeah here goes Nothing.)
Yes everyone over the age of 13 thats male Can't stand them and i am yet to know one person on the forum that does like them.

But they are doing their "job". They are entertaining the fan's. Putting the fan's first in every way. and ( unfortunatley for the rest of us) they keep releasing new music so they don't get Stale. have you seen how many people go to the concerts? Autograph signings? Yes they might not appeal to the rest of us but how many six year olds like GNR, Metallica, Pearl jam ect.

Now come and tell me that they are completley hopeless and are not contributing to the Music society. and JUST give up.

I agree with you. I like Miley Cyrus, not so much the Jonas Brothers. Guys aren't usually into that type of pop music, Miley Cyrus is very much for a younger, female audience, and I think that's why support for her is very limited on this forum, and probably with the people you hang around with.

The Jonas brothers seem to be doing well for themselves, despit me not liking them. The truth is a lot of people I know do, and I went to a birthday party for a 7 year old a few weeks ago, and things such as these, and High School Musical were the majority of the soundtrack. You won't like them because they're not aimed at you, and that's as simple as it is.

I'll agree that they are doing something right, but I'm not quite sure what it is.

They have a ton of fans, sell a ton of records, and are very quickly becoming this generation's wave of Britney/Justin/Christina...

However, we've all seen this before. The moment something new comes along, they'll be yesterday's news, and it can't be soon enough.

When they did the halftime show on Thanksgiving, I almost did the unthinkable, and changed the station.

They don't deserve a place anywhere near a football halftime show. It made me think back to Britney doing the Super Bowl halftime with Aerosmith...

These individuals are showing what is wrong with western societies apreciation of the art form of music. They show that you can have no talent, and as long as you look somewhat attractive to the opposite sex and are over produced and extensively marketed can do for a career. The music they write have no actual artistic quality to it. lets take the one song I do know of Miley Cyrus, See You Again, it is crap, guess what it scares me when you listen to the lyrics and you realise that it is a young girl that is singing those lyrics that are about topics that should be well above her age.

As to the topic title, they don't have to be doing anything right, there is a saying about all publicity being good publicity, Miley Cyrus has proved that again with those photos from a while back. The Jonas Brothers are up for a grammy for best new artist or something, we all know that the Grammys are a crock of shit, and dont mean a thing in terms of what is actually quality.

The idea that they are doing their job and entertaining is bullshit, their job is to push as much useless merchandise at all the prepubescent girls out there, there job is not to entertain, their job is to be the biggest salesperson in the world to prepubescent girls that have no disposable income of their own and must ask mummy and daddy for the list of products that are pushed.
Radio stations, especially top 40 radio stations don't play what is good, or is even listenable, they play what is going to rake in the most revenue, top 40 radio stations determine what the top 40 is, from what I understand most of what make up the singles charts is the radio play, so if a record company, lets say it is the guys that have Miley Cyrus on their roster, they pay the top 40 radio stations to play what they want them to play, it is nothing to do with whether they entertain or not it is whether they have the right look and how much the recording companies wish to push as being what everyone wants to listen to.
A truer indication of whether they are doing a good job musically is to look at the album sales figures, while an album may go platinum in a country where there is a large population base like the US, Brazil and the UK, the amount of time it spends in the top bracket is more important, if it peaks quickly than drops off just as quickly it shows that the demands on wimpy parents pockets by prepubescent girls is the driving force, not due to any mass entertainment it is targeted entertainment at its most sinister. It works on the basis of exclusion and inclusion.

This means that it is not Miley Cyrus nor the decidedly shit Jonas Brothers are doing something right, they are just part of the machine that just keeps ticking over, they have no staying power and will be gone once their current fan base grows older. This happened before with another band that was around did a similar thing, they were called Hanson (sp?). Remember them? if you do then you know that they were a flash in the pan and offered nothing more than the fact that little girls were told that they were hot, and they clamored after them. not much different from the Jonas Brothers, except Disney has added in something that worked as well for the infinitely more talented foursome of The Beatles.

So to sum up quickly, the bottom line is, the two entities in question aren't doing anything right, nor are they doing anything wrong, they are not producing anything of any merit whatsoever, and are just there as a cash cow for those who own the rights to the royalties and the album sales.

This is a British Diagram but it gives the general idea

generally speaking the Artist section is broken down more, with writers and band members getting split. So the majority, close to 50% goes to the recording studio since unless they are on a true independent label, the recording and distribution of the album is going to be one and the same. So it is in the best interest for the recording industry to push the likes of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers because they give good short term yields in the profit margin.

They're a marketing tool. A mechanism. Nothing more. Look back at all the teen idol fluff that's been out there and tell me that it's relevant. These kids are no different from that. Just like Lou Perlman's cluster of shit that only spawned ONE legitimate artist with any sort of credibility (Timberlake). It's all part of the gargantuan beast that is the music industry. It's the usual syndrome of finding an artist (NOT a musician/songwriter) and using them to produce hits for a label. You see, songwriters piss off the label because they generally don't wish to ****e out their own material. And of the bubblegum varieties of artists out there who try and write songs? Uggh. Fucking terrible. These kids would be nothing more than a standout cover artist at their local state fair if it weren't for a production team climbing halfway up their asses at every moment.

Even artists who start out with street cred can be twisted and discarded. Case in point: Vanilla Ice. This guy was a legit rapper who played all-black clubs in the Dallas area extensively before being discovered by SBK Records (that's right...the pioneers who discovered Wilson-Phillips and did the soundtrack for the Ninja Turtles movies). The instant he was signed he was repackaged to fit the ideal that would jive so well with white, suburban America (including a Barbie-esque doll for the all the twelve-year-old white girls who wanted to be "cool"). Oh, and then they didn't even have the brains to clear the sample rights for his fucking songs. Brilliant.
