The Ultimate Tag Team Partner

The Ultimate Tag Team Partner.

There have been many wrestlers that found success and fame with multiple partners. So I got to wondering, who is the ultimate tag team partner? Who is the guy that you would want to team with? Who is the guy that could help you capture World Tag Team Titles.

Criteria: The person held tag team gold with at least three different partners (WWE, WCW , ECW, TNA, ROH, Japan, & NWA). I listed many possible choices below, but I know I did not list them all. Feel free to pick anyone that meets the criteria. List your choices accomplishments in the tag team arena, and give a brief explanation.

For me, this person would have to be Mick Foley. He was the Ultimate tag team partner…and his record speaks for itself.

WCW Tag Champ w/ Kevin Sullivan

2 Time ECW Tag Champ with Mikey Whipwreck

8 Time WWF/E Tag Team Champ with Steve Austin (1), The Rock (3), Terry Funk (1), Al Snow (1), Kane (2)

Some may argue that Foley/Cactus Jack/Mankind/Dude Love was not that great of a tag team partner because he jumped around so much and never had staying power with one partner. I will argue that he was such a great tag team partner that he had to “share the wealth” and spread himself around.

Possible Choices: (And yes, there are a lot!)

Owen Hart (4 times)---w/Yokozuna, Davey Boy Smith, Jeff Jarrett
Arn Anderson---Ole Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Larry Zbsyzko, Bobby Eaton, Paul Roma

Kevin Nash---w/Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall, DDP, Sting
Shawn Michaels---w/Kevin Nash, Steve Austin Triple H, John Cena, Marty Janetty, ,
Billy Gunn---w/Bart Gunn, Road Dog, Chuck Pulumbo
Steve Austin---w/Brian Pillman, Shawn Michaels, Mick Foley, Undertaker, Triple H
Road Dogg---w/Billy Gunn, Ron Killings, Konnan,
The Undertaker---w/Kane, Steve Austin, Big Show, The Rock
Kane---w/Mick Foley, Undertaker, Sean Waltman, The Hurriacne, The Big Show, RVD
Sean Waltman---w/Marty Janetty, Hardcore Holly, Kane
The Big Show---w/ Lex Luger, Sting, Scott Hall, Undertaker, Kane, Chris Jericho, The Miz

The Rock---w/ Mick Foley, The Undertaker, Chris Jericho
Bob Holly---w/Crash Holly, Sean Waltman, Cody Rhodes
Edge---w/Christian, Chris Benoit, Rey Mysterio, Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, Hulk Hogan,

Christian---w/ Edge, Lance Storm, Chris Jericho,
Chris Jericho---w/ Chris Benoit, The Rock, Edge, Christian, The Big Show,
Booker T---w/ Stevie Ray, Scott Steiner, Test, Goldust, RVD
Lance Storm---w/Christian, William Regal, Sean Morley

Billy Kidman---Rey Mysterio, Konnan, Paul London
Chris Candido---w/ Zip (Bodydonnas), Johnny Hotbody, Lance Storm, Chris Michaels

There's a lot of good choices really.

If we're to choose from purely holding a LOT of championships, then I'd be stupid not to say Ole Anderson:

His accomplishments speak for it self, over 30 tag team championships in a multitude of promotions (even if some of them were merely a regional championship in the NWA promotion, it's still a championship.

Ole has made a living on tag team wrestling, and has been incredibly successful with it, with numerous world tag team championships, and being crowned tag team of the year for a bunch of times, so if we're talking multitude of championships, my choice would be Ole Anderson.

If we're talking influence on the business and success in the same time, I would have to go with either one of the road warriors.

These guys spend the majority of their career together as a tag team, the tag team / faction as a whole still functions as a tag team, and are currently tag team champions (I'm not sure who's holding them right now, I believe Animal is one of them although) and are quite possibly the epitome of tag team wrestling, so either one of Hawk and Animal could be great choices.

If I have to consider innovation I would have to go with Shawn Michaels, although he's had the most success as a singles wrestler, the innovative high flying / tag team wrestling that The Rockers put forth, makes Shawn a great choice for a tag team champion to put support behind and trust to be there in the ring for you.

^ In October 1990, Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty defeated The Hart Foundation for the title. As a result, Michaels is only officially recognized as a 5-time World Tag Team Champion.

Now if I was to choose who I would just prefer to be teaming with due to the awesome tag team wrestling he (they) presented during the time he (they) were paired it would be Edge or Christian, innovating the ladder and TLC matches, holding a multitude of tag team championships around both indy and world recognized promotions, and could definitely be there to count on if you're planning on capturing championship gold.

While the list seems to be disqualifying Christian, looking up at Edge's list, you see Christian being listed in all of the promotions Edge has won tag team gold in, therefore he wouldn't be considered disqualified due to the amount of promotions exceeding 3.

And I would like to note that I know perfectly fine that some of the champion's here doesn't hold championships in the listed promotions, but I felt it would be fair to qualify them as worthy mentions if they held championships in at least 3 different companies, if not, then just discount them, and look at the ones that has met the criteria.

freaking incredible thread! this is by far one of my favorite posts in a long time.

and it is a tough choice. how do you choose just one? in my case, you don't.

so i'd like to say either Foley, Rock or Austin because of their singles success, mic work and intensity. all three of these guys are great singles stars and could make any team work, but it'd be hard to count on any one of them. the mic skills are a plus though.

maybe a giant partner a la Kane, Taker or Big Show? but all three of them could use a little work on the mic, so maybe it'd be hard to cut a convincing promo with them as a partner. but still, it's always nice to have a monster in your corner in case you need one of them to win the match with a single punch or maneuver.

HBK, Jericho, Edge, Christian and Benoit are all top contenders as they all have good mic skills (okay, so not so much Benoit), incredible technical wrestlers, all capable of high risk moves, charismatic, great in gimmick matches (ladder, cell, TLC, etc) and all have had great success in very diverse tag teams.

but my all time pick would have to be William Regal. this guy is fantastic on the mic, is a great brawler, incredible mat technician, skilled in submission, has that running knee strike that looks devastating and cheats to win. i loved his angle with the brass knucks some years ago. plus he's wrestled in cages and ladder matches and other hardcore type matches and is very convincing. his tag team partners have been pretty odd pairings at times also, but this just makes Regal all the more flexible to be any kind of partner that you'd need. and should the time come for him to retire as your partner, he'd make a great manager as you pick your next ultimate tag team partner.

First off let me say this post is great and really got me thinking. Now to my answer, which was very tough because there are so many great choices of talent however I am going to have to go with Billy Gunn. Reason being is he might have not had as many partners as somebody like a Mic Foley or Arn Anderson, however the three different tag teams that Billy Gunn was a part of were three very over and very successful tag teams, all at different points in his career. The truth be told I have been a wrestling fan my whole life and I am constantly doing my research and watching matches from every generation, and when i look at the list of choices on top i forgot about so many of these tag teams being together at some point in there careers and thats why Billy Gunn hit me as the choice, because even if there was no list i could have named Billy Gunns partners, the team name, hell even who they feuded with. It is that long standing effect that proves Billy Gunns success in tag teams and if i were in a tag team, id choose Gunn.

this is definately a great thread...

KURT ANGLE- great mat wrestler, not afraid to take risks (moonsault off the cage). him and benoit were a great pure technical team. great mic skill, can really get the crowd behind him. and most importantly, motivated by gold. he wants to beat the best to prove hes the best.

SAMOA JOE- this man is a beast. out for blood& can turn the tide in a match at a seconds notice. fast, strong, intimidating. striking\submission is top notch. not scared to fight anyone. quite simply, joe's gonna kill you...

TRIPLE H- besides the obvious plus of being married to the bosses daughter, he has the physical skill to backup the best mind games in the business. strong, technical & has the mindset to destroy you or keep on till your broken. d-x was a wonderful team. plus hhh & austin were great & would have been amazing if hhh didnt get hurt. plus it never hurts to have a sledgehammer around...

BIG SHOW- large, powerful and very hard to take down. funny on the mic but is very intimidating. his run with kane was nothing short of pure domination. and recently w\ jericho was a sneaky team that could back it up in the ring. you could put show w\ freakin funaki and they could give any team a run.

I'm gonna go Judah's Lion's route and put William Regal on my list. He really can work with anybody as shown by how many odd pairings he's been in (Tajiri, Eugene, Kozlov, etc.) and it does prove the rule in that if you are going to stay a tag team specialist, you have to be able to work with everyone. Regal, though still a great singles competitor, is definitely one that you'd want to have by your side in a tag match.

However, in my opinion Eddie Guerrero would be the ultimate tag team partner for me. He was the ultimate combination of strength, speed and technique and would've been a badass tag team partner to have. His tag team success may have been limited to only a specific group of wrestlers (Chavo, Tajiri, and Rey Mysterio were his tag partners in his championship runs), but none the less he really brought a whole new spice to whatever team he was in. One of my favorites was when he was partners with Tajiri. And to see the stong kicks from Tajiri combined with the mat art that was Guerrero was a delight and brought an amazing mixture of different ways to hurt you.

You guys are all Forgetting one person... Eddie Guerrero!! this man was good on the mic, was usually a fan favorite, had unique wrestling skills and He was very resourceful when it came to tag teams, winning numerous tag titles with a variety of tag teams and stables including Art Barr,Chris Benoit,The Radicalz,LWO,Tajiri, Rey Mysterio,Batista,Chavo Guerrero, and with every tag team he was placed in, a tag title was won!! So i see eddie guerrero as the Ultimate Tag Team Partner.

Incredibly, reading the previous posts, i was about to say Eddie also.
An incredible talent who could work a tag team as well as anybody previously mentioned.

Either one of the Dudley's...they have like 23 tag title reigns...

Anyway meeting the criteria..i would love to have either big show or kane...2 huge guys who have the back of a little man...it's also a great combination...both wrestlers have held numerous tag titles with different people..
