The Technology Troubleshooting Thread

My laptop is stuck on a "Windows is resuming..." screen after waking it up from Hibernate. I've had many problems with my laptop after turning it off while loading, so I don't know what to do right now that won't end up with me taking it to get repaired.

You really don't have much of a choice than to hold down the power button until the laptop shuts off. Then, you should wait about 30 seconds to a minute at least before booting it again.

I know you didn't want to do this but if the laptop is frozen and buttons won't provide a response, this is the only way. Make sure you choose the option to "Start Windows Normally" so things could completely boot up.

My older laptop has a similar problem. I'll open the screen back up, ready to use it again and it won't come out of hibernate, I guess. The screen stays black, but everything else (lights on the laptop and stuff) light up and work as if it was going regularly. I don't get it, at all. I've done what D-Man recommends and it's a "quick fix," but I want to figure out if there's anything I can do to get rid of the problem. It's my old laptop, so I don't use it all that often, barely ever actually, but it still has some use to me.

Shut it down before you close it.

Ok, I'm back again. I found all the drivers and downloaded them, but now the scan is showing that my usb and webcam drivers aren't "plugged in". Neither of these are external so how can I go about correcting this?

Bit of extra info I found curious. My usb drives used to be designated to the letter F when I went to my computer. Now they aren't there but the folder SYSTEM is designated to the letter F.

I use Firefox 3.6.23. At times when i open Firefox, it takes a lot of time to open(30 secs to 2 mins). This generally happens whenever i start the computer and open Firefox for the first time. I do not face the same problem while using IE. What seems to be the problem?

You have drivers for them, but it shows they are not connected? Are they enabled in Device Manager?

Try updating Firefox. I've found that most of the best add-ons are up-to-date with Firefox 7.

I don't even have a section for imaging devices(the webcam) in my device manager. And all of my usb drivers have a little yellow caution icon and they say that windows can't initialized them.

Then it sounds like those drivers have not been installed yet. You have more work to do.

If you haven't done Windows Update, I'd do it now. If you have, then you just need to do more research to find all of the drivers.

I recently updated my iPhone so now custom text tones are available(Amongst other excellent features).

How do i add a custom text tone though? Are they only available to purchase via iTunes? It seems that some of my current custom ringtones are available for use as message tones so would the file extension be the same? If not then what should i name the file extension?

You can get them through iTunes, or you can make your own. They have to be shorter than 15 seconds though, I believe I read.

Cut a .mp3 file to what you want you want to hear and save it. Import into iTunes and right-click and select "Create AAC version". It will create a new file in iTunes. Drag the new file to your desktop. Change the file extension to ".m4r". Import the new .m4r files into iTunes. Move to iPhone.

Sounds more difficult than it is.

I keep getting The request sent by the client was syntactically incorrect Randomly
how do i fix it?

Where? During web browsing? During regular computer usage? If when web browsing, what browser do you use? Does it happen on many sites or just one or two?

Do you sign in to your PS3 account before you get into Playstation Home?

Hey Sly (or anyone who can help), I've recorded a podcast but the problem is the size of the file. I want to compress it to around half it's size but the of the programs that I've tried, one of them put an ad in every minute and the other just sped it up double time so it so sounds like a bunch of chipmunks.

Was wondering if there's anyway you can help me with compressing it and not sacrificing it's quality. Cheers, newc868.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Audacity is a really useful free program, I've used it for plenty of trimming and whatnot. If you're working with MP3s you may need to download the LAME MP3 add-on for Audacity, but it's not difficult, just check out the page linked above and give us a shout if you have any trouble.

EDIT-

Just checked, it took me all of five minutes to download and install everything [Audacity and the three plugins listed below it on the download page], once installed it took a further 35 seconds to drag an MP3 in, click file>export, set the type to mp3, click options, choose a lower bit-rate and click okay, etc.

The result is a slightly smaller file that still sounds okay. This should be just what you're looking for. If you can't be bothered with all this just upload the file to megaupload and give us the link, I'll do it for you.

This isn't really possible, at least that I'm aware of. The only decent way to have a smaller file size is to lower the bitrate, but that causes the quality to suffer.

The suggestion from Karilas is probably the best I could offer as well. The only other thing I'd ask is what size is your podcast, and where are you uploading it to for others to hear?

Thanks. I'm using Audacity already and that's what I've used to edit it but the file was at 52mb using 128 bit-rate and I've struggled to get it under that.

I don't know if you know any other free alternatives to Podbean that'll let me upload bigger files? Currently Podbean restricts me to 30mb uploads so effectively I have to half the MB which one compressor did but it just put ads in there which annoyed me.

Part 1 and Part 2. Would that not work?
