The Sports Bar

Marlins signed Mark Beurhrle today, beefing up their pitching (much needed) and are apparently out of the running on Pujols. Pujols has an offer from the Cardinals and two other teams, supposedly. Not sure if anyone will be able to beat the Cards at this point.

Meanwhile, there are conflicting reports out of Miami as far as Hanley Ramirez goes. One source said that they wanted to trade him and go after Fielder, while President David Samson said they don't want to deal him and that everyone is on board with Ramirez moving to third. So we'll see where that goes.

Even if the Marlins don't get Pujols or Fielder, adding Reyes and Buehrle will go a long way toward making them contenders.

Am I the only one who thinks that Pujols isn't worth half of what the contract is worth? If he was 25 and just getting into his prime, absolutely. But giving a 33 year old a 10 year deal worth over 250 million bucks, when his numbers are going to naturally decline, just doesn't seem worth it to me. It will be great for the first few years, but what happens in year 7? You are still paying him over 25 million a year for far less production. I am not knocking Pujols as a player at all...he is probably the best all-around hitter in the game. But, at his age, the money required to sign him just doesn't seem like a great investment. You could take that 250 million and spend it on a lot of pretty good young players who will be heading into their primes rather than on a single great player who is going to be on the decline.

It's not the player, it's the timing. It's a great move in the short term for the Angels, my concern is how good that deal will look a few years from now.

31 years old. But the point is valid. I see Pujols having at least 5-6 great years left, but after that, no idea. What if the guy gets injured? You're out 25 million. 10 year deals just seem way too much to me.

My bad with the 33 thing.

Basically, its all about weighing the cost of an investment vs. the potential returns on that investment. I don't think Pujols can ever give the Angels their money's worth, just like Alex Rodriguez hasn't even been close to the player the Yankees expected when they gave him that huge contract either. This complaint could also apply to Jose Reyes, I guess. What kind of numbers do these guys need to put up in order to justify those contracts? Boggles my mind.

Well at this time he is 31, but he is 32 next month. Age is still a factor.

The expectations for Pujols is probably to keep his .300, 30+, and 100+, but that they Angels need to win like two or three World Series and be contenders every year. Anything more than that is too much. Reyes needs to hit over .300, 10+ homers, 70+ rbi, 40+ steals, and double digit doubles and triples.

Pujols is 31. Of course, there's no proof of this, and it was extremely common for ballplayers from the Dominican Republic to claim to be younger then they actually are. Would anyone be surprised if Pujols really was 33? No, no they wouldn't.

Still, this is a great move if the Angels decide to stay top-7 in payroll. The Rangers proved you can't have a super-mega deal and a bunch of losers/rookies. Pujols is easily the best player in the league at the current time, and has been the past few years. He's going to start to decline, but he's still gonna be a top player for few more years.

Are you serious with this or sarcastic? I can't tell.

With Pujols being older then he says he is? Serious. At least until there's proof. There has been way way way way way too many ballplayers who assumed different (younger) identities, or at least claim younger ages.

About the 2001-2003 Rangers having A-Rod and a bunch of nothing? Just as serious. The Rangers proved you can't have one super-mega-contract and be successful. They were a consistent last place team, then had to pay the Yankees to take the contract off their hands before they were successful again (thanks to a new ownership regime).

Alright, I misread what you said the first time. Slipped my mind you were referring to A-Rod in the bolded part.

Ron Santo has been voted into the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee (or whatever they're calling it now).

Well deserved.

Why did he have to die to get in the Hall of Fame? Induction would have meant the world to him and I would have loved to hear his speech. A great honor for him but it makes me upset that he was turned away for so many years and let in as soon as he died.

Idk. Kansas may be good for Weis. Expectations at ND are always too high. Maybe coaching a mediocre team will show hus true ability as a coach. ND wanted National Titles. I'm sure Kansas football would be happy with a 8 win season.

Brain, I agree completely. He should have been inducted years ago. Shame it took this long, and shame he didn't live to see it.

And Charlie Weis couldn't get ND to an 8 win season. With other peoples players he had 1 good year, then had an OK year, a 3 win year, and two 6 win years before thankfully being shitcanned. Oh, and his shitty attitude caused the alumni to despise him and stop backing the school. Not to mention he never recruited linemen.

Manny Ramirez officially reinstated today. He's probably looking at a non-roster invite to spring training, unless something comes out of left field for him.

Honestly who are your top 10 QB's in the league at this very moment. I know the 1st 3 Rodgers, Brees, Brady is the obvious choices but the other 7 finds some difficulty. #4 and 5 to me is a toss up between the Giants's Eli and Dallas's Romo. Then Big Ben is in the mix! Cam Newton still putting up monster numbers so where do you put the other QB's?
