The Pin In A Tag Match

The Brain

King Of The Ring
Every week I see people making a big deal out of who got the pin and who got pinned in a tag match. This especially happens in matches involving the Shield. Does it really matter if Rollins, Reigns, or Ambrose is the one that gets the pin in a win or gets pinned in a loss? I could see it mattering if, for example, Rollins got pinned and Ambrose blames hime for the loss furthering the dissension story, but that hasn't happened. In a match like last night I think the guy that got the pin is irrelevant.

It carries a degree of significance in that it indicates Rollins isn't the afterthought everyone might have thought him to be a few weeks ago. It tells us something. But I'm sure, like most things, some people on here will blow it out of proportion. When you spend hours a day discussing wrestling on the internet, sometimes you make mountains out of specks of dirt that aren't even significant enough to be part of a mole hill.

It bothers me when a champion gets pinned. As for who does the pinning, more often than not it doesn't matter but if it's a big name getting pinned it matters a bit.

It never mattered much to me because, as The Brain pointed out, it never seemed to matter much to the guys in The Shield. I guess if I was hugely in favor of one Shield member over the other two, something like that would matter more to me. Also, I think some folks just like to analyze, probably because it makes them feel smarkier.

Not just about feeling smarkier, bro.

There was a time when Rollins was playing Jannetty to Ambrose, who was playing Jannetty to Reigns.

I know I just used "Jannetty" and "not smarky" in the same post, but screw you and fuck Triple H for what he did to my boy Ray Leppan (who I've never seen pre-NXT)!

Didn't really consider it when I commented guys, but you're right about Seth Rollins. Of The Shield members, Rollins had the longest way to go to get noticed or to cut out a niche for himself, and he's done that to a degree over the life of the stable. So, a pin for him in a tag match can be taken as a positive sign when you look at it from the perspective of Rollins formerly being the group's fall guy.

I'm both yes and no on that.

Yes, I agree because the champ should always look strong

No, because in kayfabe, it can either be explained that the champ was taking it easy since it was a match where his title wasn't on the line, so the outcome didn't matter as much to him... or again in kayfabe, that the champ was lulling the challenger into a false sense of security for an upcoming title match by allowing himself to get pinned, then turning on the heat and catching the challenger off guard when it matters in the title match.

It doesn't matter but I do wonder why Goldust doesn't take the fall more. I guess it could be building to that Cody feud everyone wants.

When I used to watch wrestling and the same team used to come out, I would sometimes pick up on the fact that one guy would always get pinned whereas the other guy always picked up the win with certain teams, much like one guy was always the hot tag.

Oddly enough, the guy who was the match whipping boy/fall taker often ended up the more successful after the inevitable break up from their two minute partnership. As in he got a mid-card title run before getting released, and the other guy got released.

I'd read something into that, but I am normally just pissed off because teams don't last long enough, and both guys usually end up failing and getting released.... Not that you Shield fans have anything to worry about on that score, of course not.

With The Shield, I think it actually is significant if Reigns gets pinned or Rollins doesn't. Commentary seems to agree.

Who was the last team you were really behind that this happened to?

No idea, last tag team I was invested in was Charlie Haas and Rico, but I'd never pretend either had a future beyond what they did

Buuut, if I had to make mention of a few; Legacy, Brian London and Paul Kendrick, only one of those men remains in WWE despite all of them being touted as have some kind of future, and he's in a tag team. I really don't pay enough attention, but it happens a lot.

Edit; wait, wait. I never cared about any of them.

It only matters short term. If the guy gets pinned week in week out, it can be an issue... Though its usually a work if that's the case. Mostly, I don't think it matters. The only person who will even recal who got pinned two/three weeks on is kb.

I prefer when teams look the same. Who knows which Uso got pinned?? Twin magic.

As for who gets the pin? Again, it only matters when its an angle. See Reigns for example. But who was the last guy to secure the victory for PTP? Nobody knows.
