The end of the line for John Smoltz

Today, The Boston Red Sox have designated John Smoltz for assignment. As good of a move it is for the RedSox, as Smoltz been nothing but horrid this year, and the RedSox have enough pitching as it is, it was going to happen sooner or later. But in the 10 days, if the RedSox dont trade him and Smoltz gets released, do you think he will sign with anybody else or will Smoltz be forced to retire as no team will have interest? I hope Smoltz gets signed by anybody, just so his career doesnt end the way it did.

i dont wanna see him retire right now & have the last memory of him getting killed in the bronx

so if i had to pick a team im hoping that the braves sign him just so he can play the rest of the season with them & then retire although it would have to be as a relief pitcher obviously because he proved that he has nothing left as a SP in BOS

but when its all said & done eventually he'll get into the HOF with over 200 wins, 150 saves, 3000 Ks, & being part of the greatest starting rotation in the 90s with glavine & maddux

As an Astros fan, I have seen my fair share of John Smoltz. I hated him, and that is a testament to his ability. He was a great pitcher, both starting and closing. I wish him well in his retirement. The years have taken their toll on him, and I think it is best for him to go now and not ruin his legacy with a few years of bad baseball.

It's sad to see this happen to Smoltz. We all had great hopes for him this year in Boston, and were hoping he could show everyone he still had some of that Smoltz magic left in the tank. Unfortunately he had only one good outing, and has been pretty damn awful since. It's always sad to DFA a legend like Smoltz, but he's simply taking up roster space right now that we could be using for someone else. With Dice-K and Wake getting ready to come off the DL as well, we really didn't need Smoltz any more.

Perhaps some team desperate for pitching will pick him up. He's a surefire Hall of Famer either way, and I'm glad he was able to don the Red Sox uniform once, even if the results were less than satisfying.

Personally, I'd love to see John Smoltz don the pinstripes. I still think he has enough to left to be a wonderful reliever, and he'd add depth to the Yankees pitching staff. If there was need to pull Phil Hughes out of the bullpen and insert him as a start, John Smoltz would be a terrific person to bridge that gap that would be left.

John Smoltz is a legend, the only man with 200 wins and 150 saves in his career. He can do it all, blow you away with the fastball and paint the corner on the next pitch. As Buster Olney said, he better save a day sometime in the future for a trip to Cooperstown.
