RIP Sgt. Michael Paranzino / RIP CM
Well as you may have noticed on these forums we've been holding several votes and threads to decide the best in wrestling in both 2009 and the entire decade. It occurred to me how many posters we have on here that will constantly complain about Monday Night Raw. Well, that's why you look into other products my friends, and hopefully I can introduce some of you WWE-loyalists to some great wrestling that simply demands your attention from the land of the rising sun.

Obviously the biggest event of 2009 was the death of Mitsuharu Misawa in the midst of a match on June 13th. As even those who don't follow puro probably know, Misawa was the most important figure in Japanese wrestling post-Baba. His passing is really something hard to comprehend for alot of his fans, but especially for your typical American wrestling fan. To put it into perspective for those fans, imagine Ric Flair dying in the middle of the ring in the midst of a match. Obviously you can understand how big of an event this was.

However, despite Misawa's death, his promotion NOAH continued to deliver consistently good shows for mostof this year, and in my opinion remained the undisputed best promotion in Japan right now when it comes to in-ring product. There are a few matches I want to showcase in this thread to perhaps get some of you more interested in puroresu, and the first match up is one I brought up earlier today in the Bar Room, and that's KENTA taking on Katsuhiko Nakajima for the GHC Jr. Heavyweight title on March 1st of this year.

NOAH 3-1-09 KENTA vs. Katsuhiko Nakajima GHC Jr. Heavyweight Title

A match of the year candidate right there, and only one of the many great matches from KENTA (not to be confused with the legendary Kenta Kobashi) in a brilliant year that saw KENTA become possibly the most consistently excellent worker in the world today, atleast in the junior divisions. This match with Nakajima is just absolutely brutal and by the time it's over you feel as drained as the two amazing athletes in the ring. When I first saw this match I had ir rated at around ****3/4 stars, so in other words it's about as good as wrestling can be without being perfect.

Now, despite my loyalty to NOAH, NJPW had a pretty decent year as well, specifically in the tag divisions. Their partnership with TNA continues to really benefit NJPW much more than it seems to TNA, and one of the highlights of the year had to be the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Titles won by TNA's very own Motor City Machine Guns. MCMG had some absolutely brilliant matches this year over in NJPW, specifically against the team of Apollo 55 (Prince Devitt & Ryusuke Taguchi). Their best match up had to have been on July 5th of this year in Tokyo. If you think MCMG have grown stale or complacent in the ring in TNA, I advise you to watch this match because it will reinforce your opinions of both Shelley and Sabin, both remain outstanding workers.

NJPW 7-5-09 Motor City Machine Guns vs. Apollo 55

Next up we've got Dragon Gate. For those that don't know the promotion was mired in controversy this year over allegations of animal abuse at one of the training dojos (specifically that a pet monkey had been abused in a bizarre hazing ritual) and they suffered a big PR hit in Japan because of that, but apart from that obviously upsetting news, the promotion had it's biggest year yet, with Gabe Sapolsky's departure from ROH and the beginning of the Dragon Gate USA affiliate promotion which has already begun running PPVs in many markets in the US and Canada. At the top of the class in 2009 in Dragon Gate in my opinion was Naruki Doi, who has turned the "Open the Dream Gate" Championship into a real and coveted title. When he wasn't busy running shows in the US with both ROH and DGUSA, he was busy working his ass off in Japan against guys like Koji Kanemoto, Masato Yoshino, and Taku Iwasa among others. His best defense of the year though I thought was against Kanemoto. I know, some of you will tell me he's long past his prime, but damnit I've always been a mark for the man and I'll continue to be. Great match up here from the Anniversary show on March 22nd of this year.

Dragon Gate 3-22-09 Naruki Doi vs. Koji Kanemoto

So there you go everyone, a few of the best matches from Japan in 2009 in my opinion. I only went with NOAH, NJPW, and Dragon Gate because they were the promotions I paid the most attention to, but if anyone who followed any other promotions wants to chime in on some of their favorite matches of the year, feel free. I'd love to hear some thoughts on the year in promotions like AJPW, BattlARTS, DDT, Michinoku Pro, Osaka Pro, etc? I've completely lost touch with Joshi so I won't even pretend to know what's going on in that world.

So, puro lovers, what did you like about 2009? Hate? Please for the love of God SOMEONE respond to this thread! Or at the very least watch the matches and give 'em a taste. Do it for your buddy Mr. Eko (The Artist Formerly Known as X).

Anyone who says the Motor City Machine Guns are shit...well, they need to kindly shut the fuck up. This team is epic. Japanese wrestling really brings out the best in any wrestler. Hogan, Hansen, Angle, Lesnar, and many other American wrestles honed their craft in Japan. It's nice to see some recognition of the Puro style here on Wrestlezone.

And Kobashi's just epic. The man still wrestles as good as most of the American wrestlers of today. I recommend anyone watch some older Puro with Misawa, Tsuruta, Inoki, Liger, and other Japanese stars. The newer stuff is good, but the older school of Puro may be some of the best wrestling you'll ever see.

Well I figured since there's only a few of us with any interest in puro on this forum apparently and with the Wrestlezolympics coming up, I'd take it upon myself to carry the flag of Japan and try to get some more diverse wrestling discussion on this board. Too much damn WWE talk, we need more smarks! I know, an internet forum in need of smarks, quite possibly the most ironic thing I've ever heard.

MCMG are indeed awesome, and the only reason I think people have kind of soured on them over time is because TNA has booked them atrociously for most of their careers. Without any restrictions and ready to go with two talented workers like Devitt and Taguchi, they had some great, GREAT matches over those IWGP Jr. belts this year. That was probably my favorite of the litter though.

And Kobashi's just epic. The man still wrestles as good as most of the American wrestlers of today. I recommend anyone watch some older Puro with Misawa, Tsuruta, Inoki, Liger, and other Japanese stars. Of course you know my love for Kenta Kobashi. But I didn't post any video of Kobashi. He's had a rather quiet year for the most part, though he's continued to wrestle just as well as if it were 1994. I did post a video of KENTA Kobayashi, who alot of people can get confused with the legendary elder Kobashi. They aren't related at all though, and Kobashi outweighs Kobayashi by quite a bit. KENTA has been a mainstay on the indy scene all over the world really, especially in ROH so it won't be hard to find any of his work if you liked what you saw in that match.

Of course I agree about the older stuff. I'm not sure you can rightly consider yourself a wrestling fan without having seen some of the classic matches in the AJPW heyday of the 90s with guys like Misawa, Kobashi, Jun Akiyama, Toshiaki Kawada, Akira Taue and many others.

But trust me Lariat, there is still AMAZING wrestling happening in Japan. The 2000s has been another golden age of wrestling in that country (really when ISN'T it a great era over there?) and hopefully this thread might convince you and some others to check into these promotions. Most of these promotions shows are readily available on the internet.

When it comes to Puro today, I don't follow it religiously, but I am big on a few names. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kota Ibushi, KENTA, Naomichi Marufuji, Shuji Kondo, and "brother" YASSHI are my guys. I fucking love them. Unfortunately, not much can be said about the Voodoo Murders (YASSHI and Kondo) from this year, which really hurt my passion for Puro, but the other names I listed were able to keep my interest in it to a certain degree.

I almost completely agree, man. KENTA's definitely the most exciting in-ring Junior Heavyweight there is right now (Kota Ibushi's not too far behind him though; just give him a couple of more years). However, I would still debate that Hiroshi Tanahashi and Bryan Danielson are overall better wrestlers, especially in the consistency category. Can't no one touch those guys there.

Speaking of Tanahashi, no love in your thread for him, X? By far the best Puro wrestler in the World, and he gets no love from my man Xfear? I'm disappointed... :icon_razz:

Anyway, let's see... I've only watched a few matches from this year, but if I had to pick my favorite Puro from this year, it'd have to be this superb tag match between Hiroshi Tanahashi & Koji Kanemoto vs. Takeshi Morishima & Kota Ibushi.

Interesting Note: Koji Kanemoto was legitimately knocked unconscious from Morishima's Lariat towards the end of this match, which is why the finish is kind of fishy. Warning, it is fucking brutal.

Anyway, I don't care too much for Morishima, but come on, it's NOAH's top guys vs. NJPW's top guys. That's all the info I needed to check this bad boy out in the first place back in the Summer. And this isn't some bullshit WWE vs. TNA crap where it would end up being DX vs. Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan, and the match ends up being 10 minutes worth of posing for the audience, 10 minutes of rest holds and teasing hot tags, and a finish where everyone kicks out of each other's lame as finishing moves. No, these are the best of the best from each company, delivering us with some hard-hitting, high-flying action. This is why Puro > America when it comes to in-ring action. They always deliver the goods in big time matches, and this was certainly no exception. I hope you guys enjoy it.

I definitely agree with this. MCMG is by far and large the best tag team in the World. Their work in Japan, and ROH, prove it. Those two can have great matches with anyone with their given enough time.

All great wrestlers. I'm a big time mark for KENTA and Ibushi as well.

Well it appears for once in a very long time that we might actually disagree on something man! Danielson had another solid year, but compared to years past and the wrestler he was just 3-4 years ago, I really think he's been regressing. Injuries have alot to do with that. Don't get me wrong, I love the man, but I don't think he's the single best worker today. I'd easily throw him in the top ten, probably even top five.

I probably should have paid more attention to the heavyweight divisions in my first post because you're right I completely glossed over guys like Tanahashi and many others. I was just on a 2AM puro rant about stuff that had really stuck out to me this year and the first NJPW match that popped up was the MCMG-Apollo 55 one. I love me some Hiroshi Tanahashi, but I'm not sure I'd go so far as you to say he's the best in the ring and that no one can even touch him.

Speaking of Tanahashi, no love in your thread for him, X? By far the best Puro wrestler in the World, and he gets no love from my man Xfear? I'm disappointed... :icon_razz:

I wouldn't call him the best wrestler working in Japan today, definitely not by far. There are still a handful of guys I'd rank over Tanahashi, such as KENTA, Kobashi, perhaps even Go Shiozaki and Naruki Doi, maybe even Ibushi. I love Tanahashi, but I'm not as sold on him being the best in the world as you appear to be. That's way too hard for me to pick really because there are so many guys I enjoy watching.

Anyway, let's see... I've only watched a few matches from this year, but if I had to pick my favorite Puro from this year, it'd have to be this superb tag match between Hiroshi Tanahashi & Koji Kanemoto vs. Takeshi Morishima & Kota Ibushi.

Completely agreed on all fronts my good man, another solid match up from NJPW that I had rated at about **** stars. Morishima is a big weak link in that match, I can't believe how far the guy has regressed and man he's gotten out of shape. Watching him right now is kind of sad when I think about the great wrestler we saw have classics with guys like Danielson. Still a great match up there, and the knockout at the end will only add to the legend.

I definitely agree with this. MCMG is by far and large the best tag team in the World. Their work in Japan, and ROH, prove it. Those two can have great matches with anyone with their given enough time.

Definitely, both Sabin and Shelley are absolutely phenomenal in the ring when given free reign to do their thing.

Later on tonight (maybe) or sometime soon I'm going to post about some of the other happenings in other various promotions in Japan. I haven't even touched on All Japan yet.

The MCMG match where they defended their IWGP titles against Apollo 55 was outstanding. I haven't watched NJPW like I probably should, honestly the last time I did was to see MCMG, but the matches you selected were brilliantly executed. I will definitely have to spend more time looking into puro.

You have never seen anything like this before. Kota Ibushi vs. YOSHIHIKO. It is title vs. title as Kota defends his KO-D Openweight title vs. YOSHIHIKO and his DDT Ironman Heavymetalweight title. Both men have had a tremendous year and it all comes down to this one battle to determine the best DDT has to offer.

This year's puro match of the year has to be Kobashi/Takayama vs Mutoh/Taue from the Misawa tribute show. My god this was probably the most entertaining match I had seen all year... it had everything from super strong style, to comedy spots from Mutoh... It was absolutley brilliant...
