I want a program that converts videos or atleast a good video editing software.

I'm always using Windows Movie Maker but can never find to many files in WMV.

So either a convert(which I rather have) or a differnt program that works for all file types..or atleast most

Anyone know a good freeware or shareware program that can convert AVI files to WMV and doesn't take hours to convert?

I know a great video and audio converter, its called Total Video Converter, it even converts pictures and some flash videos, I downloaded it from www.esnips.com and got it with the crack (the thing that converts the program from trial to full version). T.V.C. can convert any video or audio file to any format you desire, from AVI to MP4, from MPG to PSP MP4, even from video to audio. Try it, its awesome, is you need help searching PM me.

I also found another converter program that comes with the latest version of Realplayer, Realplayer SP, its not as efficient as TVC (Which I prefer more) but its an alternative solution. To download it visit the Realplayer website.

I'd recommend Microsoft Virtual PC or Sun Virtual Box to anybody who is into web development, beta testing, or just wants to open that email in an isolated sandbox without having to worry about it borking your precious pc. Or if you're a geek, like me, and enjoy testing out the latest and greatest operating systems, without having to mess with partitions, boot managers and loaders, file systems, etc..

Also, opensuse isn't for the light hearted geek. You literally have to be a hardcore geek if you wanna mess with suse, gentoo, fedora, etc..Ubuntu is the way to go for people that want to run Linux without being a programmer.

I have always enjoyed Winamp Media Player for listening to music or watching videos on my computer. Download it here:

http://www.winamp.com

It's very easy to use and customize. There are about 3,000 different skins available for it, each with respective color themes and neat little tricks and surprises...I find the Media Library feature very helpful, as it categorizes all the media (music files, videos, etc.) you have on your system and packages it in a browser-type format, so there's no endless clicking.

+1 I wanted to add an addendum to his suggestion. Songbird. For the longest time, I used Winamp and it was awesome because it supported all of my audio and video codecs to play music on and watch movies. I still use Winamp to watch movies, but I like songbird better because it's a better designed software program, that leaves a smaller footprint on your system. It's interface is a lot like ITunes.

I need a free program to open up .rar files. I've been using winrar for quite some time now, but, it now says that I must purchase the program since my evaluation period is over. I'd feel bad continuing to use the program, as it's been good to me. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

If you feel bad, just buy WinRAR. It's the best tool out there for opening .rar files. And even if the evaluation period is over, you can still use it.

However, there are some alternatives, although not as good:

Weapons of Mass Downloading: It doesn't look like it's supported anymore, and there's a new program in its place, but it will do .rar files.

7zip: Can be used to unpack a multitude of compressed files, including .rar. It is pretty effective, but I don't personally like it as much as WinRar.

There should be no reason that it's asking you to purchase the program. I've been using Winrar for free for years now. If it asks you to purchase it, just press Cancel and continue using the program, it should work fine. I'm really confused as to why it's asking you to purchase it, I've never once been asked to purchase Winrar in all the years I've been using it.

Yeah, it always tells me to purchase it, but I just hit the X button, and I can still use the program with no problem. Did you try doing that Tdigs, or when you saw the warning or whatever, you just assumed that you wouldn't be able to use the program anymore? If it didn't let you use to program, I would suggest maybe deleting it from your computer and downloading it all over again.

It depends what you are looking to do with it, to be honest with you. If you are looking to edit the picture or create sigs or something like that, I believe that GIMP is free to all users. Failing that you could always get a trial version of Photoshop and see how you like it. If you do like it, it may be worth paying for it. Then again, there is ways of getting it for free. However, I think that GIMP is free but I would be careful when searching for it online...

Is there a good picture editing program out there, a free one? I have no clue what to search..
For a free one, GIMP, or GIMPshop, would probably be the best bet. GIMPshop is actually very similar to Photoshop in a lot of ways, so using GIMPshop will get you fairly acquainted with Photoshop as well.

To my knowledge, it's the best free program out there, in terms of being in-depth. For quick editing, MS Paint is always a good option.

I know a good CD Burning software, caloled InfraRecorder. It burns disc images (ISOs), creates disc images, burns projects, makes music CDs...basically everything a CD burning software should do.

Meh, Google Picasa is so much easier to use and better than Gimp.

And I use a program called universal extractor. It literally supports almost every time of compression format known to man.

All are free.

I'm actually VERY fond of PAINT.net. You can make layered images, make transparent backgrounds, and a bunch of fun crap.

Also, if anyone's looking for file storage, http://drop.io is absolutely amazing. You get 100 MB per "Drop." which is basically your own little site to store and redownload files. You can create as many "Drops" as you want, and even Password them.

Back for another round:

CloneZilla - This is an easy to use Linux based version of the Ghost software. What you can do is have the program take a snapshot of your entire computer, compress it into a file, called an image, and then store that image for as long as you want. If your computer ever freaks out on you, you can just reload that image back onto your computer, and your computer will be just like it was when you used CloneZilla. It's a combination of the System Restore and System Recovery mechanisms...it removes everything on your computer (including viruses, spyware, etc.) and lets you restore your computer like the System Recovery, but it lets you restore it to the point you took the image, like System Restore. It's very handy.

It's also very handy if you buy several of the same kind of machines, and only want to set up one of them. Just set up one machine, and then CloneZilla the others.

GIMP/GIMPShop - This is a very powerful Adobe Photoshop alternative. For those people who have never had an imaging program, GIMP/GIMPShop provides a chance (for free, of course) to let everyone have a chance to manipulate images and do what they want with them. Everyone on the site could be a sig maker if you wanted. GIMPShop is the same thing as GIMP, except it's layed out in a format similar to Photoshop, and not GIMP. This comes highly recommended to people with no money who like to mess with graphics.

phpBB forums - A phpBB forum is free forum software which anyone can download and install themselves. In order to install it, you'll need to have a web server set up, with MySQL and PHP installed, all free components. Apache and MySQL are both mentioned in the list of programs. But anyways, you can set it up and learn how to work forum software on your own time and learn the ways you can work a forum, including how to modify it.

It's not vBulletin, like we use here, but it's not bad for free software.

Pidgin - This program is an all-in-one Instant Messaging system. It will allow you to sign on to all of your messenger accounts, including Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ, etc. all in the same program. No more having to open 5 different messengers to talk to all of your friends, you can do it all in one program. Additionally, this program is available for both Linux and Windows operating systems (and probably Macs too, but Mac users don't count), and is fairly lightweight and easy to use. You won't get all the bells and whistles, but for those of us who, *gasp*, use Instant Messaging to Instant Message, it's a very good program.

Ubit - Do you have Microsoft Office 2007? Do you hate the new ribbon system Office 2007 uses, where it seems that everything is much harder to find? Then install this handy little tool. It is a small plugin, but when it is installed, it will create another item on your toolbar called "Menu". If you click the Menu item, beneath will be the old Microsoft layout, where everything is categorized just like it was in previous versions of Office. Now you can find everything the way you always did before. This comes highly recommended for anyone who uses Microsoft Office 2007, but hates the new layout.

I'm gonna jump in and throw a few suggestions out for you guys.

Firefox Extensions

AFOM - When Firefox first became popular, the one major complaint was the memory leaks it had within the program. While this is no longer a major concern, it can't hurt to throw AFOM on your Firefox. What it does, it recovers and refreshes memory that Firefox is currently using. This is great when you have a ton of tabs and pages open as it can cause Firefox to slow down. It keeps your Firefox browser working at optimal level.

DownloadThemAll! - Personally I love this download manager. Not only does it handle downloads better than the native Firefox download manager, it also automatically creates multiple channels to the download source. In English that means it will speed up your downloads considerably. For an example I downloaded the Microsoft Office 2010 beta using the normal manager, and then compared it to the DownloadThemAll manager. The difference was quite clear and nearly tripled my download speed.

Web of Trust - If any of you are familiar with Mcafee Site Advisor, this is basically it in freeware version. Users rate specific websites based on trustworthiness, virus potential, etc. If you click on a link that is dangerous based on those ratings, you will have a warning about that specific site and allow you to navigate away from it immediately. This can save you a ton of headaches from viruses and spyware just because you clicked on an unsavory link.

Download Flash and Video - This is pretty simple, it allows you to download videos from Youtube, DailyMotion, etc. You can then save the videos to your desktop for viewing later or if you are not connected to the Internet.

ISO Creation and Burning

Imgburn - Really this is all you need if you're looking for a simple program to burn discs from ISO images, or if you need to create an ISO file of multiple files you have.

Antivirus

Microsoft Security Essentials - Sly prefers AVG, but I'm currently using Microsoft Security Essentials. Microsoft really surprised me with how well this free anti virus suite worked. It's got very good virus protection capabilities as well as spyware and adware protection. It uses minimal resources as well so it doesn't bog your machine down.

I think I'll end on that note. I will say Sly has a very good list going so far of free programs and I hope I can help expand that list.

Ok, so I need a free program that can restore deleted photos on an SD card. My aunt's friend accidentally deleted every picture she took on her trip. All the ones I've looked at were slow and cost money. Is there any free program out there to do it?

A Quick google search brought me to this, http://www.cardrecovery.com It say's there is a free trial, all you would need is a few days right? I don't know if there is a free long term one but that should help your aunties friend.

I've got a few here to share:

Radio Sure: Radio stations from all over the world are just one click away with this program. Choose from over 12000 (Damn!). Stations from German, Peru, U.K., anywhere really. Also choose from so many categories. Rock, Hip Hop, Talk Shows, Sports. I still haven't found a wrestling one but you know. Just one downside and its the search engine. Not too good at sorting.

Videopad Video Editor Basic: A program very similar to Windows Movie Maker. If you don't like Windows Live Movie Maker and think WIndows Movie Maker is too outdated this is it for you.

Photoshop The Concepts: For those wanting to learn to use Photoshop, this is the program for you. A great tutorial which teaches you the basics of Photoshop. From the interface to the brushes and how to install them. Its a bit of a hard read, but you'll have all the knowledge you want for sig making after reading.

Mr Slyfox

Your You-tube down loader is absolutely wonderful exactly what i have been looking for and it is safe and it works you are a miracle worker thanks a lot

Enjoyable Programs

DVD Decryptor or ImgBurn - ImgBurn is the updated version of DVD Decryptor. What this program does is rip information from a DVD disc and puts it on your computer. For example, if I rented the movie "Shawshank Redemption", and wanted to burn a copy for myself, I would use this program to rip the movie from the DVD to have on my computer. This is, of course, technically illegal, but you know how that goes. This program will only burn decrypt the movie to put it on your computer, to burn it to a DVD you'll need a program like DVD Shrink.

DVD Shrink - This will take files and create a DVD. So, using the Shawshank Redemption example from before, after I ripped the movie to my computer, I can now use DVD Shrink to take those ripped files and put them on a blank DVD. Usually, you will want to use DVD-R is you wish to burn movies to play on DVD players.

Hey Sly, just a thought, but did you mix these two programs up? If I recall correctly, DVD Shrink rips the ISO image to your hard drive while DVD Decryptor does the burning. Am I right?

To answer your question, in regards to ImgBurn at least D-Man, ImgBurn has the capability of creating an ISO file from the disc (which you can then turn around and mount using a program like Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120%, VirtualCloneDrive etc., and then watch the movie on your PC. It can also take an ISO file from your PC and burn it to a DVD as well. It's a very basic program for creating ISO files, and then burning them to discs.

However, the DVD Shrink program is the better program for getting a DVD movie onto a regular DVD-R disc. I haven't used the program myself but I would assume that it would have the capability to burn from an ISO image, or to copy directly from a DVD itself onto a blank DVD-R. Sly was correct on the functions of the programs.
