The entire show was dedicated to the memory of "Bam
Bam" Terry Gordy. At the beginning of the show,
Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd hit and the wrestlers came
out and stood on the stage where a live band had set
up and gave a 10-bell salute to Terry and got a
standing ovation after the salute was over. Someone
read a quick poem, and it was very touching. P.S.
Michael Hayes spoke and said that Terry would be
missed.
They had a live band playing all the entrance music
for everyone.
I arrived there and shook hands with Honky Tonk man
before the show and told him I was a fan and that I
read his commentary all the time on his site. He was
the usual butthead that he's gotten the reputation to
be. He was charging $5 a piece for his autograph, and
wasn't doing much business. Serves him right.
Match #1
Christian Steele won via DQ against River D. Angel(name?)
Jimmy Golden and Robert Fuller came down and beat up
Christian Steele trash talked someone. I couldn't
tell but it was just to set up for later on that
night.
Match #2
Demon Master defeated Buzz the Rodeo the clown via
chokeslam. Demon Master came out at the beginning and
spit flames everywhere. Good match overall, with some
funny stuff involving Buzz acting like he was riding
Demon Master like a bull.
Interview with Mr. Wrestling #2
Mr. Wrestling came out and they mentioned a story
about how he was invited to Jimmy Carter's
inauguration, but refused when he found out that he
would have to attend with his mask off. He didn't
even remember Terry Gordy's name when he started to
mention how he was a great wrestler. He said he knows
that he's in wrestling heaven now.
Match #3
Candy Divine defeated Robbie Raid (name?) via Sunset
Flip to become the new UWA Women's champ. Not too
good of a match, especially since the ladies couldn't
even bump, and looked like they could be grandmothers.
Match #4
1/2 of the Rock'n'Roll Express vs. 1/2 of the Midnight
Express
Robert Gibson defeated "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton with
his foot on the ropes to help the pin. Good match
overall, with a good finish. After the match, Bobby
Eaton finally got the crooked ref in the ring after
chasing him around to give him the Alabama Jam (top
rope leg drop).
Match #5
Jimmy Golden defeated Honky Tonk man with interference
from Robert Fuller and Robert Gibson to become the new
U.S. Heavyweight Champion. I was suprised to see HTM
let someone go over, especially since he usually
complains about other wrestlers and promotions. Honky
Tonk man lead us in singing his theme song before the
match.
Some time around this, they mentioned that "Exotic"
Adrian Street is battling throat cancer. I know that
everyone's thoughts and prayers will be with Adrian
and his family and friends.
Match #6
"Wildfire" Tommy Rich defeated "Nature Boy" Buddy
Landell by DQ. Dirty White Boy came out and beat down
Tommy Rich. After the match, Tommy called out DWB and
they never actually fought.
Match #7
Bull Buchanan Defeated "Hot Stuff" Eric Brown via
"Censor Kick". Bull was mentioned to be from the
Right To Censor, and walked out wearing his RTC
outfit. Good match here, and was good to see that
he's getting some work, since the WWF isn't using him
all that much. He's a great talent and is much bigger
in person than he looks on TV.
Match #8
6-man Southern Street Fight
Jerry Stud, Robert Fuller, and some other guy who I
didn't catch his name defeated "Bullet" Bob Armstrong,
Scott Armstrong, and Ron Fuller via DQ when Ron
Fuller's son. Ron Fuller (who had been faking a
shoulder injury) came in the ring and beat down the
Armstrongs with the help of his very tall son. I
guess you could consider this his heel turn, but it
doesn't matter, since they're not exactly in a story
line-based organization. The Armstrong Curse was in
effect tonight, since they lost and got their butts
handed to them after the match. Mr. Wrestling #2 came
out to defend them with chair in hand, but it's not
like he could do much to help them, seeing how he's
like 150 years old.
Terry Gordy's family was recognized as being in the
audience. A few words were mentioned in his
rememberence again.
Match #9 (Main Event)
P.S. Michael Hayes and Ray Gordy (Terry Gordy's son)
defeated Dirty White Boy (w/Dirty White Girl) and
"Nightmare" Ken Wayne with a top rope body press from
Ray (much in the fashion of Ricky Steamboat). Ray
Gordy was short and well built, and was a great
athlete. Terry is leaving behind a talented son to
this business. This match was well worked, with
plenty of teasing spots and rest holds. Also, there
was plenty of Michael Hayes' dancing all throughout
the match, which drew huge pops.
After the Main Event, Michael Hayes came on the mic
and thanked everyone for coming out and supporting
his friend and tag team partner. He said that he had
a special suprise for everyone there in Birmingham
tonight. He said he had a superstar from the WWF that
everyone was wanting to come back as soon as possible,
and said that it was none other than "The Game" HHH!!!
He's been here in Birmingham doing rehab with Dr.
Andews and it was good to see him. He walked out onto
the stage on his own power, wearing a knee brace (no
crutches), and did his usual spitting water in the
air. The entire crowd went nuts at this. He came out
and said that the sport had lost a true legend, and
that Terry Gordy was a great man. He paid homage to
Terry and his family, and really put over how great of
a guy Terry was. He told Michael Hayes that the next
time he walked down "Bad Street", that if he needed a
partner, HHH would always have his back.
It was a great show, and the Birmingham crowd loved
every match. The entire show was as old school as you
can get, with more ring psychology then actual
wrestling alot of times. Overall, one of the best
"wrestling" (not sports entertainment) that I've been
a part of.
In memory of Terry Gordy, may he rest in peace.
