Talent or Friends.... What gets you to the top of WWE?

Ive always been a firm believer that the cream will always rise to the top.

If you have barely any talent but have some powerful friends then you won't make it to the top. You may be lucky enough to get some sort of a run at the company but when it becomes apparent that you can't draw flies to shit or can't wrestle your way out of a paper bag your ass will be gone. Im looking at David Flair and Garret Bischoff as i type this. On a lesser scale X-Pac was the only clique member not to reach main event status due to simply not having the talent required.

On the other end of the spectrum we have CM Punk a guy who got heat from falling out with Tony Atlas while also getting mocked by Vince and the members of creative who simply didn't get his appeal. It's fair to say he didn't have many friends in the WWE yet his talent was always apparent. It certainly took a while but his firmly established himself as a top guy after coming close to leaving just over 12 months ago. Stone Cold and The Rock both started out with terrible gimmicks that didn't win them many fans(die rocky die anyone?) yet still managed to find themselves at the top of WWE during arguably it's most successful period.

It doesn't hurt to have both though as guys like Triple H, Batista, Orton and Sheamus will tell you. They certainly deserved their places in the company they just got them perhaps a little faster then they would have had they not had such influential friends.

So to sumarise if you have the talent you will have as much success as your talent warrants barring some freak incident or injury. However no fan will pay to see someone without talent and all the powerful friends in the world won't help you in that regard.

Define talent as it relates to being a pro-wrestler.

The things that make a great pro-wrestler are varied but the most important factor has and always will be charisma.

There have been many instances of a promoter trying to push his son and said son fopping miserably. Why? Because he didn't have "It." Even if he was a competent enough wrestler, if he lacked charisma, it was meaningless.

Kevin Nash is a great example of a guy who had talent in the areas of mic work and backed it up with a lot of charisma. He also had one of the best looks of the 90s.

His friends helped him yeah but with his look and mic skills, no matter how he was in the ring, he was destined for the main event.
