Lack of Tag Teams after 1988? What are you talking about? Right now there might a be fewer Teams but not immediatly after 1988.
Yes immediately after 1988. Thats why that match type was discontinued. Lack of tag teams. It is a well known fact that tag team wrestling in the 90's, and to this day in fact, is not nearly as good nor as emphasized as it was in the mid-late 80's.
And to anyone who would compare E&C, The Dudleys and The Hardys to The Rockers, Bulldogs, Harts, Road Warriors, Demolition, Strike Force, Horseman, etc, etc, that's just silly. We're talking about a match where 10 tag teams could participate and only one or two would have been considered jobber teams. They could never do something like that in the attitude era, simply not enough teams. Maybe 3 good ones, but thats not enough to make it a truly competitive division. Tag team wrestling had a minor resurgence in the attitude era but not nearly to the degree that it was in the 80's. 1988 was the last year where they could hold a 10 on 10 tag team elimination match featuring only tag teams, which is what the Survivor Series was originally all about. The tag roster was gutted after 88. It was the end of an era in tag team wrestilng. And thats not my opinion, its a historical fact.
Lets go through them year by year
1987/1988: WWF at it's creative peak. Classic roster with both events featuring the 10 on 10 man tag match w/tag teams only. All of whom were classic teams. All killer. No filler.
1989: Didnt compare to the previous two Survivor Series' thanks to the elimination of the 10 on 10 tag teams match.
1990:Most memorable for the debuts of the Undertaker and Gobbildy gooker. But the matches were terrible.
1991: The tag team elimination match that year was Bushwhackers and Rockers vs Beverly Brothers and Nasty Boys. Not exactly the same as it was in 87 and 88.
1992: No traditional Survivor Series elimination matches.
1993: Worst. PPV. Ever. Mabel, Mo and Bushwhackers dressed as clowns. Nuff said.
94-96: These were the dark years where WWE hit the wall creatively speaking. Survivor Series especially suffered as seeing bad characters in 1 on 1 matches is bad enough, but seeing 8 of them in the same match is just awful.
1997: The year of the Montreal screwjob. The most famous Survivor Series by far, but for all the wrong reasons.
1998: No traditional Survivor Matches, instead a tournament was held that could have easily been held at any other ppv
1999: Big Show wins the belt. Yawn.
2000: Barely any traditional Survivor Series matches
2001: The merciful end to the gawd awful Alliance storyline.
2002: The First Elimination Chamber but not exactly the best. Most memorable moment was Shawn Micheals' brown pants. What was he thinking?
2003:Goldberg vs Triple H for the belt. No thanks.
2004: JBL in a title match. Even less thanks
2005: First Survivor Series to use the TEAM RAW vs TEAM SMACKDOWN concept. Good idea. But I would hardly consider this a classic ppv, but it is the best of recent years as at least it had a team concept that meant something.
2006:The Spirit Squad took on WWE Legends. Why I don't know.
2007:Featured Greath Khali vs Hornswoggle. Not exactly a classic SS.
2008: Two pretty good elimination matches but nothing that would compare to the original years.
2009: Not a fan of triple threat title matches. This event featured 2 of them.
So looking back, I'd say 87 and 88, were the first and still best Survivor Series. 2005's emphasis on Team Raw vs Team Smackdown makes it the best of recent years. But the last GREAT Surivivor Series is still 1988.
