Summer Olympics 2012 LD

So, Jade Jones is a friend of several friends on Facey B. She's from the next town across from mine, so everyone who still lives at home has taken a picture of themselves with a gold letter box.

Just finished watching the Team USA basketball game (was asleep during the live broadcast). We looked pretty darn good, and I like our chances in the gold medal game more than I did before today's game.

I think it is safe to say that a gold medal by the USA men's basketball team is an absolute certainty. I'm glad their opponent is Spain in the final. At least they may be able to keep the margin of victory to 20 points or less.

I wouldn't say it's a certainty. Likely? Yes. Certainty? No.

After all, Spain is a team full of seasoned professionals. They're not going to be intimidated by USA.

The US men's 4x400 team just lost at the Olympics for the first time in 60 years (by "lost", I mean only took silver).

Which I guess is a good thing because if they had won, I know several members on these forums would have tried to get the competition thrown out. ;)

I think injuries and tiredness definitely told on the US 4x400 team. Their last runner, Angelo Taylor, never looked comfortable despite the massive lead he had and I was not surprised when the Bahamian ran him down.

I am a little disappointed that the USA did not win for if there was ever someone who deserved a gold medal for his effort it was Manteo Mitchell, who broken his fibula halfway around his leg in the heats and yet kept on running, completed his leg and passed on the baton with little fuss.

USA basketball again? Argh. NBA/FIBA are already attempting to address your silly notion by toying with placing an age limit in Olympics Basketball similar to soccer. Well, technically it is to make more money for themselves by owning the tournament where the best of the nations compete against each other instead of letting the IOC get all the money but minor details. :D

You basically typed my thoughts.

The funny thing is that even if the proposed age limit of 23 and under went through (which I don't believe it will), USA would still dominate in basketball. Shit, there are 5 current players on Team USA that are 23 and under. Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kevin Love, and Anthony Davis are all 23 and under.

It should come into effect. It's been good for the football but if it does, it won't affect the basketball in the same way. It is sad though. No other team sport that I can think of is dominated by one country because the strength in depth is ridiculous.

While I sort of support the under 23 rule for basketball, I am not completely sold one it as the football and basketball are two completely different scenarios.

The reason it came in for men's football is as a way to cover up the embarrassment of top flight teams refusing to allow their players to go to the Olympics with a thin veil of youth development. In other words, Olympic gold in men's football means very little to most of the top nations (although the proximity of the new season does not help either).

No, I know that there have been a couple of drop outs from the Dream Team but really all of the biggest stars are there. To me that suggests that Olympic gold in basketball means more to the USA, even if it is pretty much a foregone conclusion, than it does to professional footballers. For me, the dominance of one nation/league is not a good enough reason for a rule change. Plus on top of that, the likelihood is that it would make little or no difference to end result, whilst making the quality a little lower.

This will not mean much to many here and will highlight how much of an Olympics follower I am, but Mo Farrah's last lap tonight was ridiculously familiar to the great Lasse Viren's last lap in the same event in 1976.

I mean eerily so.

Exactly the same tactics of refusing to allow anyone to take the front at any stage and then somehow outkicking faster finishers.

I think there is no higher compliment for Mo than to be mentioned in the same breath as Viren, who was probably the finest race tactician ever.

Rudy Fernandez has NO sportsmanship. I have no use for guys who constantly flop the way he does. It's one thing to embellish a situation, it's another to simply flop.

For what it's worth, this gold medal basketball game has been worth watching. Both teams are fouling way too much though.

The announcer made a comment about Pau Gasol and Kobe being Laker teammates. There was an awkward silence after that.

Congratulations to the USA Men's Basketball team, and equal congratulations to Spain for making it a close and competitive final.

The fact that the Dream Team played in Barcelona, Spain 20 years ago and the Spanish are now giving the Americans a run for our money is a good sign that sending over the greatest players in the game is a good thing.
