Student Teachers Relationships.

I thought i would try and get some banter going with a ridiculas topic.

Now i am not talking about Primary school or High school age but, at least in college it is completly illegal to have any kind of realationship with your students. but if they are not in your class and the student is a consenting adult what would it matter?

Your not helping her pass by cheating or anything. seeing they aint in the same class, and they are both consenting adults. I think they should be able to do it. as long as they are the legal age. and are in seperate classes I cant see any harm.

I know teachers are supposed to be role models for students and the such, but if the feeling is there I think you should be able to go for it. that would be like a police officer not able to go out with anybody charged with a crime.

What are your views on it. do you think they should be able to date legal students as long as they are both consenting? or do you think its a big no no.

I dont think it's illegal here in Canada, for a student and their teacher(university) to get together. Really I don't see the problem, it's just like if you were to date you boss. It might be unethical but if their both of legal age then it shouldn't matter. I could see why some people may frown upon it since the teacher could be easier on them, but a teacher should be able to leave school at school and their love life at home so they should just treat them like everyone else. I also dont see a problem with High School teachers to date their students as long as their legal age, since you can't help who you like, but thats another topic.

well i live in Australia. high school ranges from the age 13, 16. 17 if you repeat but its highly unlikley. seeing that is under age It would be a problem here. you cant help who you like but you shouldnt be able to go out with somebody under the legal age. I can see why that is a crime just not the college and university.

Here in Canada highschool ranges from 14-18, and the legal age is 16. So of course if your underage than it's 100% wrong regardless of who the person is, but I don't see why it would be a big deal if your 17 years old and you want to date a teacher. I know people say that teachers hold an authority over you so it could be pressure and such but that's the same with your boss and such. I don't know, I just don't think a teacher should get into trouble if they dated their student as long as their were legal age.

It is illegal here. But I don't think it should be once the person reaches legal age. Now here, technically you reach it in High School, but I'd definitely say it should be college if this was ever 'acceptable'. At the end of the day, you're an adult then and should be able to make your own decisions. The only problem is favouritism. It'd be hard for the teacher not to let relationships get in the way of how they treated people in the professional environment, therefore if they were to get together, I think the student should be made to swap classes.

The only thing to question in this situation, is even though he/she isn't the students teacher..Are they in a position where they can still influence the students grade?

In most cases it's yes...They have access to everything around the school....Including the other teachers.. All it really takes is a talking to of said teacher and Sally's c+ turns into a B... She's still passing and the teacher only had it marked up a point....

There are clearly advantages to dating a teacher SOMEWHERE in the academic circle.

Would I date a female teacher had I been given the opportunity? Absolutely... But I still see what could be wrong with it... At some point the teacher needs to realize it's not the fact that it's illegal -- it's in the job description.. Any job tells you to not have inner office relationships...A school is no different... And where maybe it is wrong for it to be against the law, it's always going to be the schools wishes that this kind of thing never happen...

So you need to follow the rules of your job, or ask yourself if the love you feel over powers the love you have for you job..And if it does..Quit

I think a lot of it depends on the age of the student. If for example a college professor is dating a student that didn't go directly from high school to college and is say in their mid 20s, there's nothing wrong with that at all. However, the gray area of course is the possibility of a teacher showing favoritism to that student. While its possible the teacher wouldn't intentionally do it, if they are in a relationship with a student and starts grading one of their assignments they might subconsciously go lighter on them. I don't think that its really that big of a deal if the age is legal, but no matter what its a gray area.

I think that if the student is at least 16, and they both agree to it, why does it matter? If two people love each other, then why should you have to break it up?
The only thing that would be bad would be, as KB said, that the teacher would show favouritism towards that particular student. There is no way that this could really be fixed, as you are going to favour someone in a relationship.
You could also get picked on by your classmates by going out with a teacher, and this would take friends away from the student, and draw them closer to the teacher.

It would definately be illegal for primary school students because they would be way under the age of consent and in high school, studends would reach nsw age of consent in year 10 at the earliest, year 9 if they repeated.

What happens if the students was to say, get involved with the head teacher of English? Even though he or she may not be in the class being taught by the head teacher, the head teacher is able to access all the marks and puts them into the system (atleast at my school thats how its done) so having a relationship with a head teacher would be able to do that, the head teacher could help him or her pass.

I think "its a big no no." because it would cause a lot of drama. The girl or guy who is involved with a teacher would be made fun of everyday, the student would not be marked and assessed fairly and the students who deserve to achieve the top rank won't be getting it unless the student is getting 100% then it's kinda hard to give the student in the relationship a higher mark.

Also what happens if the teacher was to break up with the student and hurt him ot her, how fun would it be for the student to come to class every day? Not very.
