Should people with mental ilness's be able to have kids? IE my parents

Sparky

I say this now, but if/when my dad comes onto this forum, It shall be edited for fear of getting disowned by whole family.

Bear in mind that We can't stop them from falling pregnate themselves but I'm talking bout IVF and the such.

Now my Step mum can't fall pregnate the normal way, and Want's to have IVF, but she has Sever Brain damage and my father has skitzophrenia (bite me) and they wan't to have a kid. BUT living in that house is so strict on me, While wrestling ( ok understandable) and half of the rest of the TV show's are on there is allowed NO talking at all. and while my step mum's shows are on she refuses to do anything. They should not be able to have kids together as they won't Look after it properly, and could you imagine living with a person that would leave you in the Shopping trolley in a car park (true story)

Personally I think NO way in hell. If they ever raise that much money to afford it, I will do everything in my power to stop it. I DO NOT want a little brother and sister that would, Be neglected like that, and have to grow up around them. as he/she would think its normal behaviour.

What kind of brain damage does your stepmother have? Is she, legally speaking, mentally ******ed? As for your father's schizophrenia, you are aware that it can be treated with medication, right?

If your stepmother and father would not be able to provide for the child, then I am sure that is something that a fertility doctor would take into account when they decide whether or not to give your stepmother IVF (keep in mind that in vitro fertilization itself is expensive). To be totally honest, you raise valid points, but I am a little scared to agree with you, as I have been diagnosed with depression. While I am not a father, I have not ruled out the possibility of one day having a family. However, the one thing I know for sure is that I would never have a family if I felt that my mental health would jeopardize my family's well-being in any possible way. Thus, in the end, it all depends on whether or not you have the will to conquer your own problems.

She was in a car accident and lost the thing that makes the Chemical that calms you down when you get angry, Causing her to skitz out over the slightest thing.

Well she can talk and function for herself, but thats about it.

Right... But your only on that for a while, and when dad takes it, it makes him worse, and he is in and out of Jail/Hospital non stop.

But they don't do any kind of assesment. basicly anybody that hands over money can have a kid *points to the lady that recently had six kids*

Car Accident, She currently has 250,000 in her bank, is just waiting for it to be approved by her trustees.

So have I. whats that got to do with anything?

Depression, can be beat. and its not like your going to go Emo in front of your kid. You could be trusted with a kids life if you have depression. (unless its post natel (sp))

The problem is people could develop a mental illness after they have given birth to all of their children (My mum) and then you can't really take back the birth of the childen because of the mental illness.

I think all parents to be should be legally required to see a councellor, or a psychiatrist, both mother and father and be interviewed together and seperately to be determined as fit parents to be and yes, I know there are flaws with that idea e.g. They might not be the same after giving birth and in that case, they should be made to see them again after giving birth to see how they are etc.

The parents would have to be able to accept it when they are told they have a mental illness and I know I wouldn't have kids if something wrong with me would make them have a miserable childhood, but then again, most people with a mental illness wouldn't admit to it so they would think nothing is wrong and have kids anyway.

But yes, I agree Sparky, no, mentally ill people should not be able to have kids until they have treatment and show no more signs of the illness.

She had 8 kids... And stupid fucking people like that should NOT be able to reproduce. Your parents, however are a different story. I'm not sure that what your parents suffer from are hereditary and can be passed through genes. Whether or not they're able to fully care and provide for the child should determine whether or not they should have this kid they want. I've met some stupid fucking people in my life that had no business reproducing. I firmly believe that certain people should be prevented from tainting the world with their shallow gene pools and fucked up kids. I think that people should be evaluated and be given a permit to reproduce. If you do stupid shit throughout your life, that permit can be revoked, depending on the severity of the stupidity in question. Other people should be banned on principle... I'm sure we all know someone like that... :)
