Round 3 Matchups

Welcome to My (And Not Sly's) House
Instead of posting the results from each match, which is something anyone that wants to see can just go click on the match to find out, I'll just be posting the third round matches. The third round begins on Monday, so there will be five days for campaigning and discussion, either here for non spam or in the bar room for spam.

I'm campagining for Little Miss Sunshine! Little Miss Sunshine relies on great ensemble acting from Breslin, Collet, Arkin, Carell, to make the film great. Also the story is simple but very enjoyable and you really don't need to know a backstory to get it. It also doesn't rely on fancy special effects or action sequences like LOTR. Even thought LOTR is a good film the third installment really doesn't seem to spectecular without the other two. Just consider the screen/play, acting, and story when considering which movie to vote for and not just the fancy effects and epic "hype" around the trilogy.

Okay, so we had a little mix up with the match-ups, including completely forgetting two movies from the 90's bracket (KB needs some sleep). But we fixed it, and so here are the REAL match ups for Round Three, to commence this coming Monday:

Gladiator has an easy match up this round, no one can actually say Kill Bill is better than this epic Gladiator. I am begging everyone who votes in the tournament who hasn't seen Gladiator, or who hasn't seen Gladiator in a while, go out and watch it. I'm sure if you go down to your local movie store, you can rent it, buy it. You can borrow it from a friend. Heck, go watch it on the internet, Im sure its on there. Gladiator is the best movies in the 2000s, and it should roll.

I'll say Kill Bill is better than the hype-machine that is Gladiator. I'll lose, and I know that, but I'll still say it. I loved the style of Kill Bill and how the story came together. I may not be able to get everyone to drink the Kill Bill Kool-aid, but it's worth a shot.

Chinatown isn't getting past Rocky if I have a say, though, and I know I'll meet some resistance. But Rocky is an American institution. Cuckoo's Nest must destroy Star Wars.

Schindler's List and The Usual Suspects represent one of the better match-ups we've seen thus far, but Usual Suspect stand NO CHANCE against Schindler's List.

It also hurts that either Forrest Gump or Silence of the Lambs has to lose. Two absolute classics.

There is nothing good left in the 2000's. My only hope is that the winner of that bracket loses to whichever decade they go up against in the semis.

How am I going to support Gladiator if the person supporting Kill Bill is you Irish! I am shocked that anyone supports a movie over Gladiator like Kill Bill 2.

Philadelphia Inquirer's Desmond Ryan
"It's a stunning Roman triumph."- Rating of 100

Film.com- Ted Fry
"It's that very rare feeling that you're settling into a movie whose individual elements are so finely attuned they fuse into a singular construct of pure entertainment."- Rating of 100

I was discussing movies with my old neighbour one day, and we were about to get to our favorite movie, and I had the plan of converting him from the onset. When it got down to it, it was discovered I didn't have to, because he had already made the right pick. He chose Gladiator.

IMDB gives it a strong 8.3 Ratings, chosen by film fans.

Russell Crowe's acting was the best it has ever been, better than A Beautiful Mind, better than most peoples acting have ever been.

Without Gladiator, there would be no 300. 300 was the efforts of people to try to create their own group of Maximus Decimus Meridius. It wasn't close to being as good as Gladiator.

The scenes of Gladiator are what always got me. The Colosseum scenes, the army scenes, the senate scenes. The music that goes along with these are top notch. It is a fantastic film.

Edit: I am very sick, so I cannot think. Forget the code for an image.

I really did enjoy Kill Bill. This match up is more of a split decision for me. I feel that both of them are good movies. Gladiator was good in a classic sense. Kill Bill is good in a different way.
Chinatown isn't getting past Rocky if I have a say, though, and I know I'll meet some resistance. But Rocky is an American institution.
What? Let me repeat that. What? I don't care how big of a movie Rocky is or if it is really popular. What I do care about is which is the better movie. Chinatown is an all time great movie. It is one of the top two mystery movies every, arguably the best. It is the best of the neo noir genre. The acting is superior. The soundtrack is filled with haunting trumpet solos that work phenomenally with the movie as a whole. Can you think of a more gripping ending in a film? It conveyed so much and inspired such a sense of utter futility. Hands down Chinatown only should lose to Godfather and Star Wars. I would like to see Chinatown beat those films as well because they are so strongly the favorite.

Alrighty, so Here I go.

In the 70's, the Godfather is going to beat Monty Python, even though I will be voting for Python. The Godfather simply has too big of a fan base not to get that movie by. I'll be voting for Alien to get by Taxi Driver myself. I enjoyed Taxi Driver, but Alien is a fucking masterpiece, an is the best sci-fi/Horror Movie ever made.

In the second match I'm voting for Star Wars to take down Jack and Cuckoo's Nest. I love me some Jack, but no way in hell is that movie comparable to the greatness that is Star Wars. And I also agree, Rocky takes down Chinatown setting up a pretty good final four in my opinion.

In the 80's, I'm still pissed with Raiders getting beat, which it shouldn't have. if Terminator can get past Raiders of the Lost Ark, then ET shouldn't be a problem? Right, I'm not sure. Two great movies, but I'm going to give the nod to the Robot. Die Hard (which shouldn't have beat Aliens) will get by the Breakfast Club, a movie I still have no idea to this day why people love it the way that they do.

In the second set of matchups, I'm going with Back to the Future over Raging Bull. Raging Bull is great, but there is something special about Back to the Future. In the last matchup, as much as I love Ghostbusters, it is in no way, shape and form comparable to the greatness that is the Empire Strikes Back. In fact, the Empire Strikes back is easily the best movie left in the 80's, and it's not even close.

The 90's is much tougher, what a truly solid, solid decade of great films. The winner of this tournament is coming out of this field. Schindler's List should take down the Usual Suspects, which is a shame because the usual Suspects is fantastic, but it speaks to the power that is Schindler's List. The Second matchup has Saving Private Ryan vs. the Matrix, a very interesting matchup to say the least. While the Matrix was a great Sci-Fi movie, it stands no chance against Private Ryan.

The second set of matches has Pulp Fiction vs. T2: Judgment Day, a battle of two personal favorites of mine. It's a tough pick to be honest, T2 revolutionized Computer Animation in films, and was just a great film to look at, but Pulp Fiction is better. The last match is truly the hardest match yet, Forrest Gump vs. Silence of the Lambs. That is an epic matchup, and only a great film like Silence of the Lambs would be able to take down Forrest Gump.

So into the 2000's, and on paper, it truly is a lackluster decade for great films. sure, financially they've done well, but quality is another issue. With the 8 movies left, I wonder if filmmakers decided to skip this decade. Return of the King vs. Casino Royale is sure to start a feud on here. I'm stuck on this matchup. You're not sure if Return of the King is a stand alone film with all of it's achievements, or if the Academy Rewarded the entire Trilogy. If it's RotK vs Casino Royale as singles movies, then CR wins. But if it's as I think the academy saw it, the entire Trilogy vs. CR, then LotR blows it away. Then you have the Departed vs. memento. While Memento was a great movie, and an interesting way to tell a story, the Departed is clearly better.

The second set of matches has Gladiator vs. Kill Bill 2, a unique matchup to say the least. Both are great movies, and I'm not sure which to choose at this point, even though I'm leaning with Gladiator. The Last matchup makes you think what hte hell were the people that were voting in this smoking. Honestly, the 40 Year old Virgin and Little Miss Sunshine represent the 2000's as top 8 movies. That is a very damning statement on how much shit this decade has produced. Both of these films are undeserving of this round.

The ones that are bolded are my picks. I picked the movies that I thought were more entertaining, not necessarily "better". I must say, though.. Some of the movies that made it this far are craaaaap. 40 Year Old Virgin? Casino Royale? Ickkk.

Oh man I am soo excited for the next round! When does it start again? I was thinking it started today! I think these rounds are really going to get popular, due to the fact by now, almost everyone has watched all these movies, and also because it is getting down to crunch time. I advise people who really care to get out there and start renting some of these movies, then you get a chance to participate more.
