Christopher Nolan caused some discontent in the tournament's preliminary discussion, but his 2000 mystery/thriller Memento marked the start of what would be a hugely successful mainstream directing career. However, it has the unfortunate fate of going toe-to-toe with a film that came very close to winning the last movie tournament. Both of these movies made their presence felt at the 2001 Academy Awards however, and it will be interesting to see who the forum advances to the second round.
