Round 1 Match: City of God vs. Full Metal Jacket

The polls will close for this match on Friday, October 19 at 12:00am

One of the few foreign films in the movie tournament (sorry), Academy Award nominated City of God faces off against Stanley Kubrick's Vietnam War drama, Full Metal Jacket. Both films are incredibly well-received and highly rated by both critics and the average consumer; the question now is, who will make it past the first round?

The first 30 minutes of Full Metal Jacket are unbelievable. That entire time you sit there floored at what you're watching. Then the film leaves Boot Camp and goes to war.... and meh. The war scenes are mediocre at best. It's nowhere near as good as the stuff you'll see in other war movies, Vietnam war films included.

City of God.... just like the first 30 minutes of Full Metal Jacket, you sit there floored at what your watching. The difference? It lasts throughout the entire film, not just the beginning. City of God is compelling and shocking all the way throughout, which is why it deserves to beat a film like Full Metal Jacket.

Vote City of God.

As Jmt already pointed out, City Of God holds catches your attention early on, and the story hooks you in for the duration of the film. It's emotional and disturbing, and these feelings last throughout the entire movie.

Full Metal Jacket provides similar feelings.....during the early stages. When Vincent D'Onofrio and R. Lee Ermey disappear, the interest level for Full Metal Jacket takes a huge dive. Matthew Modine can't carry this film as the leading man at all, and the post- Pyle/Hartman portion of Full Metal Jacket is horribly boring.

This is a tough one it really is. If this was the NCAA tournament this matchup would be North Carolina vs Kansas.

I would have to go with City Of God because as mentioned before its gripping and compelling from start to finish. COG takes you into not a violent underworld but to great story telling "You just killed the coolest hood in the city of God" Benny was the coolest only he could bring together different factions of Rio together for a party.

I'm not going to piss all over the other half of Full Metal Jacket it was decent because they start at the Tet offensive and the battle of Wei-City and who could forget Animal Mother (Adam Baldwin) and before Peter Griffin we knew that the Bird Is The Word but it's not enough to beat the full grade A film that's City of God.

Does this mean Ann Margaret is not coming?
