Round 1; 16 Doom v 113 Silent Hill 3

Yet another extremely difficult matchup. I'm sorely disappointed that only Silent Hill 3 made the cut, as the original game I've always thought was the best. People can talk about Resident Evil being the most frightening horror game franchise there is, but I've never found any of the RE games to be frightening at all. Silent Hill on the other hand scared the piss out of me. You'd be walking through the foggy streets and all of a sudden just hear the most insane noises imaginable from different directions, and than some kind of disfigured automaton monkey dragon would walk by calmy, not bothering you, but scaring the piss out of you. I'd sit there while playing Silent Hill and say to myself "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT AND WHAT IS GOING ON RIGHT NOW?!" The third game was another fine installment in the series, and while I prefer the original, it's quality can't be questioned.
That said, it has the unfortunate fate of facing Doom, the most important FPS ever created (I prefer Halo & Goldeneye, but Doom's legacy can't be disregarded). The game that set the entire FPS craze in motion and gave millions of nerds in the 90s a new outlet to vent all of their pent up, nerd-anger. It's pretty obvious the influence the game had on titles like Halo, and in this match up I must begrudgingly vote for Doom. Simply put, one of the most important video games ever made.

When i think of survival horror i can think of no scarier franchise then Silent Hill. When i play SH3 i find myself fearing for my virtual life. That's how into it i get, and I'm sure a few others also. SH3 has always had a special place in my heart, although it doesn't do anything new in the series. I have always found it to be the eeriest out of SH 2-5 with the best protagonist. It was a nice change to play as a female lead, doesn't happen often. Especially one that i felt was realistic about her situation, well as realistic as you can get. Through the start of the game Heather(protagonist) i feel really acts her age. Sharp tongued, freaked out, and a bit moody, but despite all this as you play you see Heather's courage grow and her tolerance towards her disturbing situation grow.
Although I'm sure Doom was great for its time and innovative, but i have to give my vote to the game i felt really showed what survival horror is about.

God damn it. I have to vote against Silent Hill 3....this is almost as painful as voting against TMNT.

Doom
No one is questioning the impact Doom had on todays gaming socioty. But the fact of the matter is, Silent Hill 3 is a better game, with better quality. Its not a tournament based on what had more impact on what, as Mario would just whip everyones ass on the face of this planet, but its based on the better game. Silent Hill 3 is a better game, and thats coming from a person thats first video game he ever played, was Doom.
