Ron Paul Finishes Third In Iowa

I am from Iowa and I can probably tell you why Santorum had his surge. The guy has been touring the state like a mad man, meeting with more people than anyone else, and spreading his message grassroots style like no one else in the state. This is just an example of what strong campaigning can do. I think part of it is that people always want to feel closer to the person they are going to vote for and he has made himself a lot more available than anyone else. I've watched every one of the debates as well and am pretty familiar with all the candidates, Santorum seems like a really straight up guy. I don't get the feeling the guy is bullshitting anyone when he's stating his stances on different topics which is probably why he appeals to so many people, he comes off as very genuine and passionate which makes people feel like they can trust him.

I did not go out an caucus last night. I am a registered Republican but I really don't have a horse in this race right now. At the moment if I was to vote for anyone it would be Gingrich simply because I know he could demolish Obama in the presidential debates, has the most experience, is clearly the smartest candidate, and when I've heard his plans they sound like the most logical and feasible. I don't expect the Republican candidate to be some staunch conservative, high powered far right bible thumper, nor would I particularly want that.

I mention that because historically Gingrich has walked on both sides of the aisle a bit and that doesn't bother me one bit, it encourages me. I think we need a more moderate candidate, and while Romney is that guy I just don't trust him as far as I could throw him and don't believe he could lead the country and better than Obama, realistically. Gingrich has at least been in the fray, he knows how shit works on Capitol Hill, he's helped balance the budget before, and I like his no-nonsense direct approach. As popular as Ron Paul is with people I can not support him fully. I like some of his ideas and stuff but there are too many that are too far out of whack. No reason to even talk about Perry, Bachman just dropped out today(Thank God),

Although I find it highly suspect that Santorum, a relative unknown at this point surged and wins a primary in under 2 weeks.

Santorum's success, after months of trailing badly in the polls, resulted from a dogged strategy of visiting each of the state's 99 counties and engaging in the traditional retail politics that Iowans love.

Sounds like Santorum was concentrating all his efforts on Iowa, and apparently voters there believe if a candidate puts in a lot of effort, they’re better suited to be president. He has nothing going forward. Well, other than the fact he’s not Romney.

Unlike Ryan in the prison, I don’t know much about politics. I’m only 18, I’ve never paid taxes, and I’ve only been living here two and a half years. That being said, I haven’t liked what I’ve seen so far from the potential republican nominees. Everyone seems to be competing to see who’s the most “consistent conservative,” who’s least like Obama, and who can overturn Obamacare the fastest. That’s not what I want to hear, and I don’t think that’s what the average American wants to here.

The GOP needs to sort themselves out. Debates go around in circles, the likes of Perry and Bachman give liberals ammunition and add to harsh negative stereotypes, and candidates aren’t offering much needed specific solutions. Their only chance of victory in the up and coming election is to rally behind Romney and show confidence. Otherwise, Obama will win my default and we’ll get another four years of shit all happening. And I know it’s “not his fault” and “Republicans are to blame,” but a good leader finds a way to get things done and follows through on his promises.

In a perfect world, or rather, my perfect world, there wouldn’t be republicans or democrats; candidates wouldn’t have to define their entire ideology by one word and individuals would run for the presidency. Again, I don’t know much about politics. I took a government class for a semester here two years ago and got a C+. But some things make sense to me, and other things just don’t.

Anyway, on a lighter note, Bachman is out :)
