Ric Flair: "I DEMAND someone hold the rope open for me when I enter the ring"

I personally love it. It doesn't matter how much of an ass someone is outside of the ring, when you've been doing it for 30+ years, you get a gold watch and some respect. It has become part of his character, face or heel. Open the ropes for the man. I don't care if he flips you off backstage and calls you a bitch, open the ropes for the guy. Is he arrogant for wanting it done? Sure, why not. But in all honesty is it a topic for conversation? I don't think so. Do you open the door for a 60 year old at McDonalds? Yes. Do you hold the ropes open for a legend (regardless if you think he is that great or not) of the business you're a part of? Of course you do, and if you don't, he has every right to "demand" it.

That is bullshit. Unless the 60 year old at McDonalds is handicapped, I'm not opening the door for him or her because they can do it themselves just like Flair can go through the rope himself. Hogan is a bigger legend than Flair could ever hope to be and you don't see people opening ropes for him now do you? How about the Undertaker or HHH for that matter? When you act an ass outside the ring, it does affect how people view you inside the ring and when that mentality goes inside the ring, you are just furthering the problem.

Make the money Flair has in wrestling, THEN talk shit about him wanting some 'respect'. How can anyone say Flair is overrated? All he did was wrestle YEAR ROUND and usually 45-60 minute matches with top talent around the world. And he did this for the better part of SEVEN years. He's put more miles on his body than nearly everyone in the business' history. That's a bold statement, too.

So if he wants the ropes held for him, and doesn't get that, raising a little hell about it would be fine with me. He's RIC FLAIR! His opinions are not exactly ringing endorsements to most of his peers, but typically, if you worked hard, he respected you. And if you were a solid talent, he'd respect you. If you made money, he respected you. So to conclude this, Flair can do this and get away with it. He's 16 times world champion and paved the way for many careers.

So Flair gets a pass for this one.

No way is Flair in trouble for this. Unless your name is Steve Austin or Hulk Hogan, you're not as big of a deal in wrestling as Ric Flair and that's all there is to it. Referees are there as an aside to the match. It's a wrestling show and there's a reason the wrestlers are the stars of it. They're who the people pay to see. Flair has been doing this longer than most wrestlers have been alive. If he wants to have the ropes held open for him, he deserves it. He's Ric Flair. That sums up his defense on it.
