Rey Mysterio gone from WWE too?

Really? He seemed like one of those guys that are very loyal to the WWE. If it's true, I'm not sure it's a good idea. Don't think anyone would be willing to give him as much resting time without releasing him like WWE did. His body too doesn't seem to be in too good a shape for him to work in wrestling capacity for too long at a stretch. Wrestlers in his physical state tend to relax with a Legends deal. Maybe they are offering him an amount which is vastly more than what WWE offered him.

I thought WWE took the option to renew his contract, as Vince was pissed that Rey had missed so much time on his previous deal that he owed them more time? Where is the source that you heard this from? Have you got a link?

I would have expected to see Mysterio retire in WWE, but perhaps he wants to call it a day on home soil, which is fine. I'd be shocked if WWE would cancel his new contract though, as I'm guessing he's still a pretty big merchandise seller with kids.

Rey has had a great career, but it's probably time for him to call it a day. He can only do a fraction of the high-flying offence he became famous for, and is getting heavier and slower every time I see him. His knees are wrecked so for the benefit of his mobility in the future I'd like to see Rey hang up his mask, preferably in WWE.

That will make everyone who booed him at Royal Rumble very happy, then.

Personally, I'll miss the little guy.

You do realise he wasn't booed because the fans don't like him anymore, he was booed because he wasn't Daniel Bryan, right?

It could have been almost anyone in the #30 slot that night, they would have been booed out of the building in Pittsburgh

If true, this would be a great shame. Rey should have a proper retirement from the WWE He is a unique superstar and is easily the best little man of all time. His in-ring career in the WWE is all but over, they simply can't keep putting him through this. Injuries has hampered the end of his career but he needs a send-off befitting of his talent. Something like "Rey Mysterio night" on Raw would be just.

If this is true this is indeed a great shame! AAA organization cant offer the ceremony and retirement the WWE can offer him.. Rey from the looks of it can barely walk let alone do his high flying stuff he is so famous for.. If this is true, then I dont think the WWE cancels his contract at all,he is still loved by the kids and respected by his peers and fans alike.

I think Rey will call it a day if true in AAA and then again for us the major fanbase in the WWE. I can understand Rey going back to his roots, after all he wrestled in a church in mexico at age 15 if I remember correctly..

Rey deserves a Legends deal,be inducted into the HOF,if his knees are up to it have a sendoff match at WM then retire!

I loved Rey in ECW and WCW as well as some of his WWF/E career, but he's been past his best for quite some time.

If he isn't done yet, I don't think it'll be many more years.

Is this big news? Just a few days ago I read that Konnan was advocating for Rey on Twitter.

Rey's a legend in all of pro wrestling/sports entertainment, but especially lucha. If he wants to finish his career in AAA, good for him. Far from a "shame" that a luchador would would want to take his final bow in front of a lucha libre audience. WWE will make plenty of hoopla when he's goes into the Hall of Fame.

I've seen a lot of reports on the internet over the course of this year stating that Rey was seriously considering heading to AAA after his WWE deal expires. Even though Vince took it upon himself to renew it, some reports indicated he MIGHT take legal action to get out of it. I'm not really sure why Vince wanted to renew it IF:

A. Mysterio didn't really want to remain in WWE
B. He's essentially paying Mysterio for sitting at home

Rey's body has pretty much had it. His knees aren't going to get any better as time goes by, he'll ultimately only make it worse if he keeps competing in the ring. Also, Rey hasn't really been much of a genuine force/factor in WWE for a few years now.

From what I understand and remember, this has been several months back, reports said that Rey would have a prominent role in AAA that probably wouldn't require him to wrestle very often.

It does seem like a shame IF Rey really intends to head to AAA. If past experience is any indicator, Vince will probably feel betrayed and his ego will be bruised a bit, but I don't think he'll hold too much of a grudge. Believe it or not, Vince has mellowed over the years. Reports stated that he was genuinely affected and hit hard by Warrior's sudden death and we've seen him mend fences, to some degree, with Bret Hart, Hogan, Sammartino and some others. Vince turns 69 in 10 or 11 days and maybe he's reached a point in his life where he feels it's pointless holding onto bitterness. As a result, if Mysterio leaves, I'd say he'll still wind up in the WWE Hall of Fame a few years down the road.

I don't know that I'd call it a "shame", though I do understand where people are coming from. Rey was a pretty big star in Mexico, he was already inducted into the AAA Hall of Fame back in 2007. At the same time, Rey ultimately came into his own in WCW and WWF/WWE where he was no longer just another small, high flying wrestler from Mexico. Mysterio is one of the very, very, very few under 200 pound legit, big time wrestling stars in the United States.

Don't be too sure Vince is gonna "play nice" over this... he made a pretty big signal of intent by renewing his contract (and not doing so yet with guys like Christian or Ziggler for example) and this is to me the exact same as Randy Savage in 1994... He has a talent that is perhaps "past it" in terms of the WWE ring but valuable for merch, advertising/sponsorship and with the Hispanic demographics. He wants that resource as long as humanly possible and not to see that revenue disappear to another company. Most use the Steph story as the reason for the ill will with Randy... it wasn't it was the $10m equivalent Slim Jim deal that Savage took with him that caused the issue, the issue that nearly bankrupted the WWF.

Rey doesn't have THAT much stroke but he is valuable to TNA, AAA and even to GFW and New Japan, he could spend the next 2 years making a very good living travelling the world as an attraction and Vince knows that... so he will delay that day as long as possible as now ADR is gone too, once Rey is gone a large portion of fans from that demographic will also leave and one of the biggest merch sellers will be in the bargain bin rather than premium rate revenue...

Oh, I don't know. If Roman Reigns, or C.M. Punk came out at No.30, they wouldn't have been booed. I know it, and you know it!

Actually I think Reigns would have gotten booed as well. When the Rumble was happening the Shield were still heels, they turned face shortly after. He only got cheered at the end because the crowd saw how gassed Batista was and probably didn't think he deserved to win. Do agree though almost anyone wouldn't have had a good reaction from that crowd.

As for the topic of this thread. I heard that it was former Spanish commenter Hugo Savinovich who started the rumour this time. He reportedly gave an interview to PWInsider, and stated that Mysterio was leaving and heading to AAA. I have no idea of the truth to this rumour but that's where this one started.

I'd be fine with this. Mysterio is indeed a legend, an innovator and a pioneer. He basically introduced lucha-libre to the US audience and has done more than anyone to make that kind of wrestling popular to the American people. Some of the things he has done in the ring have been mind-blowing, and to do all he has at such a small size is incredible.

I can understand why he'd be fine with retiring in AAA, but I'd much rather see him get a proper send off in WWE with a tribute night- they can bring out Mil Mascaras, Juventud Guerrera, Pcicosis etc and other famous luchadors to sing Rey's praises, show clips of his finest moments (and there are ALOT), and give the biggest little man the send off he deserves from WWE.

Even after this, I don't think WWE would have an issue with him appearing on a AAA card to receive his plaudits from the Mexican fans, and then he could go into the Hall of Fame at the next WrestleMania. WWE will be a worse off without Rey Mysterio but ageing and retirement comes to us all.

Know what I wonder about? If Rey is somehow allowed to make a non-wrestling appearance at AAA (I'm presuming a wrestling appearance is forbidden), can the AAA promotion sell his masks the night of the show? If they could, it would seem to take money directly out of WWE's pocket, as the sight of Mysterio at the show would surely spur kids to buy the mask.

For the same reason, I doubt WWE will let Rey finish his tenure with them without at least one last appearance......first, to honor the guy for serving for so long......and, more to the point, to stage a marketing extravaganza ("Last chance to get your very own Rey Mysterio mask, kiddies!")

In any case, I'm not too upset by the possibility of him leaving, if that's what he's doing. He's spent so much time on the injured list (while collecting his salary) that his value to the company has been severely diminished over these past years.

Got to sell a hell of a lot of masks to make the numbers work, I would think.

I was coming into this thread to say that Rey wants to leave WWE to go to AAA to wrestle a lucha libre style when he can't even handle the WWE style?? Then I got to reading and realized it more than likely wouldn't be like that. He is a legend no doubt about it and one of the reasons I got into pro wrestling over a decade ago. Whatever he wants to do to end his career he deserves it and we should all respect that. He will be in the Hall of Fame in a few years no doubt about it.

On the flip side, I don't think Rey can be blamed for wanting to leave a company which cares about his well being so much that they forced an extension on him that he didn't want because their overworking of him has been catching up over time.

In AAA, and on the non-WWE scene in general, he's free to book or not book himself as he pleases (which, as mentioned above, was not the kind of freedom he was going to get from WWE). This is also why guys like RVD, Angle, and Hardy were happy to be out.

This is a better move for Rey overall as he's likely to still make good money with AAA and others, and not be shackled to the WWE's whims. Recent revelations about the treatment of other Hispanic performers also likely played into it. Perhaps in the end, self-worth and self-respect mean more to some people than a payday or exposure.

Rey can barely walk at this point, never mind wrestle. He needs to just announce his retirement from in-ring performances. Once he does that, then the negotiations can begin. The way he is going about this is dead wrong. By refusing to cash the checks does not forgive him from contractual obligations, if there are any. If Rey challenges Vince, this will get very, very ugly. And, this bridge burning will keep him out of the WWE HoF until Steph and Trips' daughters become Grandmothers.

I doubt it very much. Retirement is much more likely to be on the horizon, his knees are shot to hell.

Same thing I was thinking. I don't know what impact Rey could have in AAA or any other promotion at this promotion in his career.

I hope he just retires. He can be a Hall of Famer easily.

AAA has come out & said they aren't going anywhere near Rey's contract, they don't want to risk getting sued by WWE. When his deal is done with WWE I doubt anyone is really gonna notice he's gone, seeing as he spends roughly 10-11 months out of the year being injured.
