Reinstating the Draft

#hamler

That's all folks.
On July 15, 2010, Congressman Charles B. Rangel, a Korean War veteran, introduced H.R. 5741 which if passed would require all persons in the United States between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform national service, either as a member of the uniformed services or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security.

In the United States,
Selective Service System said:
If you are a man ages 18 through 25 and living in the U.S., then you must register with Selective Service. It’s the law. According to law, a man must register with Selective Service within 30 days of his 18th birthday.

The United States abandoned the draft in 1973 under President Richard Nixon, ended the Selective Service registration requirement in 1975 under President Gerald Ford, and then re-instated the Selective Service registration requirement in 1980 under President Jimmy Carter. Today the U.S. Selective Service System remains as a contingency, should a military draft be re-introduced.

So, I ask you WrestleZone,

Do you believe the draft should be reqired for your Country?

What are your overall views of conscription?

There was a reason it was abandoned. e_e

We've got the largest military in the world, and the largest stockpile of weapons. If any country on Earth needs a military draft, The United States of America is first and foremost the last beyond a shadow of a doubt. A draft in this day in age would be put to bed not long after it's enforcement. Men and women would burn there draft cards and run faster than a Southern black man. And it would be abandoned yet again.

A draft is necessary for some countries. But the United States is not one of them, and the last thing we need is more coffins coming home. The only time I would ever support a draft for America is in the unlikely event of invasion.

I am a conscientious objector. I do not believe that I have the right to kill another human being unless it is under extreme circumstances. We are given life by a higher power, and it is not our right to take that life away. The only time I would ever kill someone is if someone I cared about was in need of defense. I am 100% against mandatory military service. I'm sure I will have some people disagreeing with me, but I am entitled to my opinion. I'm extremely thankful for all of the heroes out there voluntarily defending my rights. That doesn't mean I'd ever do it myself because killing in wars and destruction is not the answer. I believe that there are better ways for countries to resolve issues. If it did get re-instated then if possible, I would seek some type of civillian role I could do away from the line of combat. That's a happy medium in between the two extremes of being unthankful for the army versus being out there actually fighting.

I completely agree with you... The difference between you and myself is that you've probably just got a few more months before you're exempt from it lol...

But no seriously, I am firm believer in God... even if I don't always go to church like I should... and I firmly believe that if he wanted man to kill his own kind then he wouldn't have made man to begin with.

I do not believe in the draft either for numerous reasons.

a) I find the possibility of being forced into a position of having to kill morally reprehensible.

b) In the 21st century, I would question the legality of the draft. It can be arbitrary and unfair and to my mind would cause no end of legal challenges. People are not drafted into the police force, fire service, coastguard etc so why should the army be any different?

c) While I do not begrudge others for being so, personally, I am as unpatriotic as they come so I have no interest in putting my life on the line for my country. Also, while I understand that others do, I have no concept of how me joining the army and being shipped off to God knows where protects my family.

d) On top of all of these, the idea that I would be forced by the government to potentially be put in harms way scares me. Not specifically because of any dislike for governmental policy but quite simply because of cowardice.

To an extent.

I feel every able bodied male should at least receive basic weapons and military training to be able to form militia in case the red fucking dawn goes down, only in the most extreme of cases of national defense would they be utilzed(such as in a case were people would be mobilizing to defend themselves anyway) but beyond that, no.

If I am in a situation abroad were the lives of me and my men are on the line, I in no way shape or form want some 19 year old who was forced to be there standing beside me.

With regards to the first part I wholeheartedly agree. In fact, the earliest forms of youth physical culture was an education for potential militia service. It went hand in hand with standard book learnin' (as well as art, music, and philosophy, etc). I'd like to think that if we all had a basic education in such things there'd be less crime and more respect given to each other. While I'm not saying it's time to revisit the agōgē, there's something to be said for a strong functional education based on service to your fellow man and society.

Now THAT should be mandatory, actual military service? Not so much.

Norcal puts out a good point, weapon and military training would hurt nothing, and could potentially be useful. I see no problem with that. But an actual full-on draft? No.

Some people don't want to serve the U.S. by fighting.I am full-on that everybody should serve their country in some way, but as long as their are people who want to serve their country by helping the sick, cleaning up the streets, making new laws, or (like me when I get older) educating the youth, then they shouldn't have to enter the military when they don't want to. Plenty people volunteer for the military and want to, some people don't want to put their lives at risk like that, or kill others voluntarily. I admire and respect those that do, but some, like me, don't want to, and it shouldn't be necessary.

I believe that everyone, men and women alike, would all benefit from going through something like boot camp. If everyone was required to have that experience at a certain age, perhaps the summer after they turn 18, we would have a more disciplined, respectful, physically fit, responsible, and successful society in general. The qualities that are instilled in a person in boot camp - such as teamwork, respect, willingness to help, and perseverance - are qualities that will serve anyone well throughout their entire life. People whose future is filled with dead ends and wasted potential would open to a world of possibilities and they would find the motivation to accomplish what they are capable of. Laziness and apathy are enormous problems in today's world that could be tackled in a huge way through a requirement like this. People's lives would be transformed in a hugely positive way.

I would never want someone who was forced there to hold my life in his hands, however. The people I want to be serving on the front line with me are the ones who have the same love for their country and as I do and who are willing to do everything in their power to to protect and defend their buddy to their left and their right.
