I think they just didn't want to acknowledge it because 'Taker was in the thick of his American Badass gimmick, which has been pretty much retconned out of WWE history these days.

I get that, but I remember 'Taker saying this, I think it was on the My Yard DVD, that the Deadman is always a part of his character (kayfabely he was speaking I concluded), and he will go back to it one day.
