Afa Anoa'i (SAM) vs Rey Mysterio (MEX)

This is a first round Ladder Match in the 2010 Wrestlezolympics. The only way to win is to climb a ladder and retreive a "passport" hanging from the catwalks. The passport will send the winner onto the medal round MITB Match. There are no disqualifications and no count outs, though outside interference is strictly prohibited.

The match will open for discussion on Thursday, January 28th, and voting will begin on Friday, January 29th. This is a non-spam thread, so if you decide to post, you must provide reasons why you are backing a particular wrestler. You may vote without posting.

Could this be set up better for the small one? I certainly wouldn't think so. Afa was big, slow and lumbering. If Rey knocks him to the floor even once then that's enough for him to get up the ladder. This is almost as easy a match for Rey as you can ask for.

Afa Anoa'i would have to rely on his power game to ground Mysterio before climbing the ladder, but he would take a long while to get up there. Considering that Rey has defeated much larger opponents with similar styles and the fact that his lucha skills and time in hardcore matches... Rey Mysterio cannot lose this match. This man can climb faster, and would quickly beat Afa to the punch.

Mysterio for the victory.

Big fat slow man, with no history of ladder matches against lightweight fast man with a history of winning them. It's another pretty clear cut one this, and it was always going to be easy for whoever drew Afa and Bushwhacker Luke.

I am not known as being a huge Rey Mysterio fan. I fact, as far as I know, I coined the term "over-REY-ted." But sometimes the stars align just right, and this is one of those cases. Mexico was chock full of great possible choices for the Ladder Match, and yet Mysterio was chosen because he would be the best at it. Samoa, on the other hand, looks like Egypt in the Winter Games compared to some of the competitors here, and Afa was thrown into the ladder match as a stop-gap to free up some of the talent with a snowball's chance in hell for the other events.

This is as much of a mis-match as Hogan vs whichever Russian he is facing and Jericho vs Bushwhacker Luke.

Has to be Rey here. There really isn't an argument that could be made for Afa. Sure, you could say that he could use his size to soften Rey up for awhile, but Rey has beaten tons of big men in the past. Hell, he's beaten Kane about 15 times over the last few years alone. Smooth sailing for that mask guy in this one.

I think Rey has more work cut out for him then many might think. Afa as one of the wild samoans many incarnations held tag gold 18 times in a carear that spanned the globe and touched every territory. It's going to take a while before Rey can do enough damage to keep Afa down long enough to stop him from yanking the ladder out from under him and beating him sensless with it. I do think though that at the end of the match it will be Ray hanging from the belt and retriving it due to his speed, climbing ability and sheer tenacity. This won't be a cake walk for Rey but he will prevail in the end.

Come on now... there is no thinking required here.

Fast vs Slow
Thin vs. Fat
Agile vs. Grounded

Every single thing that characterizes this match caters to Rey Mysterio. Sorry, Afa... all Rey needs to do is trip you onto the ground and he'll be climbing that ladder before you can get back up.

Big men are usually put into Ladder matches because they are able to beat down on the smaller men, and thus win the match. But lets see how many times that has happened.... Taker over Hardy,...

That is it in my mind.

Afa is no Taker, and Rey is on a similar level than Hardy, but on a higher level now than Hardy was then. Rey goes over.
