Raw Commentating sucks (Jerry Lawler quotes included)

Just about everyday some how a Raw thread turns into an attitude era vs PG era discussion.

Who else misses this guy

Jerry_Lawler_-_Jerry_Lawler_10.jpg

I'm not even talking about perverted King that all he could say was "puppies" .... I don't even care if he's behaving during the divas matches... who else misses heel king? Heel king could get your mind off the awful match going on in the ring and keep you entertained.

I know there shouldn't be awful matches in the first place, but with working 250 dates a year you know there is going to be quite a few. Not to mention with Squash matches the King was brilliant.

I currently have a subscription to wweclassics.com and it doesn't matter what time period I'm watching (80's WWF, Early 90's WWF, GCW, Early WCW, Attitude era for both WWF/WCW) their always has to be a heel announcer. It makes the matches that much better IMO...

Bobby Heenan- Wonderful
Jesse Ventura- Wonderful
Old King- Wonderful

Bring back the heel color commentator!

I know we have Striker on Smackdown who tries to be a heel... but honestly whats the best heel stuff he does?.... He calls Vicky Guerrero a cougar, and flirts with her?

Does anybody else feel the WWE needs to make big changes with the Raw commentating team (I'm not even saying you have to replace anyone)

But currently you have

Michael Cole: First of all we can all agree Cole is not the most liked announcer today... but even with that is Cole a heel or face? On Raw they portray Cole as a face to where he is polite and usually is rooting for the baby faces. The very next night every week Cole portrays a heel on NXT where he often roots for the Heels and discredits the credentials of the faces.

Jerry "the King" Lawler

King has been stale for about 5 years now. Bring back the smart ass King that used to make it his goal to get McMahon to flip out on commentary.

In Conclusion we'll do some Q & A

1) Is Raw's commentating missing a heel presence?

2) What is you favorite King quote from his heel days?

3) Am I just overreacting because I'm a King mark?

King Quotes

Talking about Terry Funk:

"If he has a brain, he'd be an idiot"

"Pass the bread, here comes the bologna.. Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie are trying to wrestle!"

"Look at Chainsaw's head... I've seen better heads on a pimple"

"I heard that when he was a kid the three wise men helped him with his homework."

"The only thing harder than his legs are his arteries."

Random Quotes

"Koko B. Ware is a crossword wrestler: he enters the ring vertically, and leaves horizontally."

"You've got one of those Bill Clinton computers: a six inch floppy, a harddrive, and no memory."

"Mark Henry is so strong he eats steak with a spoon."

(Talking about Lou Albano)
"I heard he went to an antique auction and three people bid on him"

1) Is Raw's commentating missing a heel presence?

I don't believe that a heel presence is truly needed for the commentary to be good, it's been said often that Jerry Lawler simply lost the urge to do this, at least it comes off like he lost the feeling for commentating, he's not as life filled for it at least.

But I wouldn't complain if someone turned heel on the RAW announce table, or if someone new and heel like debuted.

It's been discussed before, but Chris Jericho could be one HELL of a commentator on RAW when he retires, although I feel he might go back to his music career, if he did stick to wrestling, the announce table would be the perfect destination.

2) What is you favorite King quote from his heel days?

I wouldn't say just one quote, but there's a whole "conversation" that had me loving Jerry Lawler, back when I believe it was Eric Bischoff brought Stacy Keibler to RAW, having her stripping and all, he invited her down to the announce table to dance on the table.

The sounds and facial expressions he made there had me laughing hard, and that is by far my favorite Jerry Lawler moment.

3) Am I just overreacting because I'm a King mark?

I wouldn't say you're overreacting, because it's been said by a lot of people that Jerry Lawler seems to have lost the spirit in commentating, and I agree to some extend with people, while I can certainly see he's lacking compared to his early 00's or 90's stuff, he is still however entertaining at times.

You know, unlike pretty much everyone in the IWC, I don't think we need a heel commentator in order for commentary to get better. What we need is commentators that are entertaining. Commentators can be face as long as they banter with each other as well as calling the match. They need to sound excited. They need to sound like they're truly getting into it. They need to know when to talk, when to stay quiet, when to call a match, and when to mention things that may be important. All of this can be achieved with face or neutral commentators.

A commentator has to be fun to listen to. They have to call the match in a dynamic and exciting way. They need to add humor and entertainment. They need character and personality, and all of these things are needed by all commentators of any alignment. Sure, some are better at being entertaining when they're heel (Michael Cole), but some

King doesn't need to turn heel. But he does need to sound like he gives a damn. Right now, he really does not. If he put some passion into it and didn't sound like he was phoning it in, I'd enjoy listening to him. His "insults" towards the heels are lame and he just doesn't sound enthused.

I don't think RAW desperately needs a heel presence but I would like for it to have one. I haven't enjoyed Lawler since Evolution was formed. He was brilliant going back and forth with Ross during HHH's match with Booker T at WM 19. One of the reasons JR was so good was that he had King to play off of. I believe he could help Cole even though Cole isn't the super face announcer he was on Smackdown. Lawler can be entertaining every once in a while but I don't believe he can be what he used to.

Yes, yes, and yes a thousand times! Commentary on Raw sucks right now, and it's not JUST Michael Cole. I'll try to refrain from bashing Cole throughout this, but it's mostly his fault. (I hate him) When Jerry Lawler was a heel commentator, the announcing was much more entertaining. JR called the shots in the ring, telling us what was going on and did so with passion and intelligence. And The King took sides with the heels, made excuses for them, and argued with JR all the time. He was Triple H's biggest fan during the Evolution Era, and it was great. The announcing was controversial and made you feel like you had a choice as a fan on who to root for.

Now we have Jerry "the lame' Lawler and Michael "I'm the reason Tazz left" Cole. Instead of talking about the action going on in the ring, putting passion into his calls, and letting you really get into the match, Cole tells us literally what is going on, what happened earlier in the night (ten times) and obviously tells you what is right, what is wrong, and who you need to cheer for. He doesn't allow The King to have a personality, because he doesn't leave room for his character. King is forced to make jokes and say random thigns whenever Cole isn't talking, and they're usually uninspired and lame. I love the King, I think he's been a great presence in this industry, and he's a great announcer, but he's nothing with Cole on the table. I also like Matt Striker. If they could get along, I think Striker, Mathews, and The King could make a really good announce team. But it will never be as good as Good Ole' JR and Jerry "the King" Lawler.

The biggest problem with the commentary is Michael Cole not knowing the bloody meaning of the word 'literally'. Last week he said "The superstars would like to come out and help the legends but they literally have their hands tied!"

If just ONE person would tell him the meaning of that word it would make him far less annoying. (Well, not really.)

I don't really think that a commentary team needs a heel commentator, it just needs one with actual personality.

That being said, on a previous thread I explained my love of Matt Striker, and I still consider him the best commentator the WWE has had in the last 4 years, because even when Tazz was still commentating, he started getting stale around mid 2008, and I started losing interest. I liked having JBL, but when he quit, I kind of lost hope...until Striker came along.

I got off topic there...King only has decent chemistry with JR. They both have the personalities which can contradict each other on almost everything in kayfabe, and that's when King can really play a heel, and that's why JR was so angry when he got drafted to Smackdown in 2008 (I believe). King has the potential always to be a good commentator, but like some earlier posters said it seems that he's lost his drive. I really don't even pay attention to RAW anymore, I just have my mark out moment when Nexus comes out. I don't think that King has much longer, personally.

Personally i feel a heel commentator is necessary. I find it annoying to find both commentators on one wrestlers side and just talk down about the heel. Jerry Lawler is damn annoying and Michael Cole makes me wanna watch TNA. Cole is only heel when the Miz is nearby which makes no sense really.

Sometimes it is best when there is no commentary to ruin it(Like the Nexus attack).

My favourite quote is Referring to Razor Ramon:

"I'll bet every time he gets in his car, the oil light comes on."

:lmao: classic and another good one to Ahmed Johnson is:

"Dean Douglas told me that the toughest 4 years of your life was the third grade."

I agree Jerry has lost his touch, Jim Ross stated in his blog a few yrs ago after he got drafted to SD! he was actually happy as Jerry "The Not King as Booker beat me for my King title" over prepares for the night and doesnt let the flow of the stuff roll off. My favorite Qoutes by Lawler was when he was talkin bout his boy Brian "Grandmaster Sexay" Christopher, when he acknowledge he was his kid without sayin that's my son. I enjoy Cole commentary alot as I'm on his side and actually like him as it's not his fault the Commentary is bland. I was Xtaic when Josh Matthews replaced Lawler this past Mon as it's hard for me to enjoy Jerry's commentary at all, I think Jerry needs a vacation and go home for a lil bit as I think he's burnt out now and needs a break but he won't. As his replacement Josh "Mr. 2-0" Matthews, Joey "Oh My God" Styles, Dusty "My Elbow kills you with 1 hit" Rhodes, Norman "King Of Hardcore" Smiley, Shawn Michaels or Chris Jericho when he retires.

As Lawler quotes here are some of my favs:
"I don't think he's going to be able to beat these odds, J.R!"
"Put another quarter in him" (after Road Dogg does the Juke 'n' Jive)
"J.R., what's the all aboot?" (after a Test big boot)
"Danger! Falling objects! Ugh!",(Talking about 3 Min Warning)
"He's going for an upgrade" (Talking about Matt Hardy durin his Senshi Of Mattitude Days)

1) Is Raw's commentating missing a heel presence?
I'm not too sure, maybe it's because its PG and they don't want kids hearing people being ripped all the time..but then again we get one wrestler calling another the human jar of mayo!!
I do like the old heels commentators, but King as kinda outgrown it, as he has gone apst doing commentary for the last 15 years, he has become more mature...I think Matt Stryker could be the next heel commentator..

2) What is you favorite King quote from his heel days?
Puppies??

3) Am I just overreacting because I'm a King mark?
No, course not, I like the King as well, but sure sometimes people change, it happens over time, when he retires, you'll be even more pissed!!

I don't believe it's necessary for Raw to have a heel commentator. I believe chemistry is a more important factor, and each man needs to be entertaining. It would be awesome if WWE had a an announcing team that would remind us of King and JR(attitude era) or Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura/Bobby Heenan, but those days are long gone.King can show some signs of his old days every now and then, but it's very rare when it happens. Forget some of the edgy stuff King use to say, he just doesn't seem to have that same passion for commentary he once did. Also, Cole and King just don't have the same chemistry JR and King once had.

"his mouth is so dirty, he put water in his mouth and spit out yoo hoo."
-jerry the king on henry godwin.

i miss heel announcers so bad, they made wrestling way more entertaining to watch. i can only imagine heel king screwing around with cole and making fun of john cena and pretending to not see the heel cheating.

Of course its needed. Anyone can see that. Look at when JBL commentated. It was very entertaining if you ask me. Michael Cole should be sent to Smackdown or something cause hes boring and "The King" Needs to shut up because hes annoying. The commentators i want are Ted Dibiase and Jim Ross. I think that would be the best commentary for RAW

Yeah I miss the King but as most of the thread says he has out grown it. TH
he person we need is Michael Cole. Now before you go bitching I hate his heel commentating as well but now on NxT its diffrent. He should drop the split persona and be heel 24/7. I mean he hated Bryan in season 1 and now I think its Kaval cause when he get number 1 he said 'the internet vote' if he kept this up King could get more involved about how Coles always bitching. We dont need King to turn Heel again we need Michael Cole

The King is good as a heel, although he has lost a step, but the major problem is Michael Cole. Cole must be replaced. I'd much rather have Matt Striker on the announce team, even if he'll say shit like "Tie your mother down!!!". I miss JR on the announce team but we all damn-well know he won't be coming back, his health isn't good enough. Michael Cole and The King need to get some chemistry quick... because this just isn't working.

I have noticed ever since WWE started the PG era things have started to really suck, there is no blood in steel cage matches, elimination chamber matches, hell in a cell, they stop matches even on a Pay-per-view to clean the person up, my god a pay-per-view that people pay good money to watch and they stop it.

only reason commentary sucks is because people like Lawler can not be more out spoken like before, DX can not really be DX, hell stone cold would of come back as GM but why, can not do the middle fingure salute or stuff, the PG thing has to go, surprised they allowed a beat down of Ricky Steamboat would they not consider that to violent beating down a bunch of old guys in the ring no disrespect to them, just saying, where do they draw the line with this PG B.S., whats next, have undertaker vs big show at next wrestlemania in the first ever pillow fight main event, lol

maybe the reason why Lawler looks like he has no passion anymore is because of the PG restriction, the fact they split King and Ross up who were good together in my opinion.

if WWE keeps up this PG rating going to stop even getting the Pay-per-views, not worth the money they charge for water down product.

what they advertise is never what they do, did they not say every match at last pay-per-view was 4 way matches, it was mixed up, think a pay-per-view was last man stand or I-quit matches and it was mixed up.

TNA might be small but at least they are not watering everything down like I have been seeing, only thing interesting is the NXT thing going on other then that pretty boring.

sorry just my opinion

I agree that lawler isnt the commentator he used to be...but i still love him. The reason he worked so well is because he had such great chemistry with J.R. The same could not be said with Cole. I dont hate Cole but i definitely dont like him. Hes somewhere in the middle with me but none the less has taken over the broadcast table and gives lawler little time to shine. Lawler was at his best when he was a heel because it allowed him to make fun of other wrestlers and in return gave us many memorable lines and quotes.

The pg rating i think hurts him too. They took away his ability to talk about the one thing he loved which was the divas. Without screaming about "bra and panties" or "puppies" it leaves an empty whole in kings commentary and a much needed excitement boost to a boring divas division. His little outbursts ands screams as simple as a loud "ahhhhh" has also been lost in time. All the little things that made "the king" relevant and entertaining next to the main man JR.

In closing i think its a combination of the wwe not letting king be "king" anymore and bad chemistry with Michael Cole resulting in a lackluster and tone downed version of the once great Jerry Lawler.

This might work...if Michael Cole had any amount of talent at all... However, the idea of making Cole the guy to turn heel is at least interesting. The thing is, enough people hate him that it just might work. Except, they dont' hate him for the right reasons. They hate him because he's bad at what he does, he's annoying as hell, he has no idea how to correctly hype a match, and he has no passion. Also, a lot of people are angry about him replacing JR, and there's plenty of things he could actually use to his advantage if he was a "heel" announcer. The only reason I see this being worse than it is now, is that there's enough going on in WWE without making a big deal of Cole's heel change, and you know they would. I swear if he becomes the GM...

I gotta echo Ferbian and Doc on this one. A heel commentator isn't what makes the commentary entertaining. What we have now is just boring. On Raw, we have Michael Cole as a PBP, and King as a color commentary who is basically either kissing up to the faces, or talking about how good everyone is. Then on Smackdown, we have JM with the PBP, and Matt Striker as a heel commentator, but excessively boring most of the time.

What we need are guys who can make some solid commentary as well as hyping the match and making it more exciting for the fans, kind of like what J.R. did.

I think what Raw commentary needs is to get rid of that shit Michael Cole, he is the biggest waste of space and money, I really do hate him. As someone said in another thread, I think Dusty Rhodes should replace Michael Cole, I have watched some FCW videos on youtube, and I have to say, it is a shitload better than the commentary fom the we know as Michael Cole

I'm warming a bit to Michael Cole lately. Not sure whether it's because he played the heel character so well in recent weeks or whether he's actually starting to improve. I think the bigger problem is Lawler. The guy signed out a LONG time ago. I don't care about whether the PG era is over or not he makes absolutely no effort to compliment Cole in the box and he comes over as lazy imo.

I think back to Wrestlemania and he said exactly the same thing every match.. 'that's gotta be the biggest Batista Bomb I've ever seen'... 'thats gotta be the biggest Attitude Adjustment I've ever seen'. He must have done this at least 4 or 5 times.

Lawler needs to fix up

I definitely miss the heel King! I don't know if it would work for one reason.....Michael Cole!

I s he a strong enough face announcer to pull it off? The give and take that Lawler had with Vince and JR is what made it work. I just don't think Cole has the chops!

1) Is Raw's commentating missing a heel presence?
Not necessarily. I think RAW can succeed with or without one for commentary.

2) What is you favorite King quote from his heel days?
Not sure if this was from his heel days, but his reaction to when the Rock mentioned "Poontang Pie" for the very first time was priceless. He was like, "What kinda pie is that J.R.?!". The other one that probably was from his heel days was when the Rock was giving his heel speech in Toronto. He was like, "Don't be a mother-Canucker, J.R.". Classic.

3) Am I just overreacting because I'm a King mark?
No. I think J.R. has lost his passion for commentating, but I don't think he has to turn heel to get the ball rolling. He just needs to have fewer restrictions on what he can use for commentary.

Absolutely raw is missing a heel commentator. Remember how much Heat JBL drew on smackdown, by trashing rey mysterio? It automatically made you like Michael Cole more because JBL was such an asshole Having a heel commentator automatically makes the other commentator look better, which is something that Michael Vintage Cole could benefit from. One of the problems with Raw is that the horrible commentary detracts from the show's segments. Cole and The King's banter routinely ruins the comedy segments, and at other times, Lawler and Cole are so busy arguing, you cant pay attention to anything else. This past weeks raw, you may have noticed that Ted Dibiase and John Morrison had a great match. But chances are you didn't, because the whole segment was focused on how Cole called Maryse a gold digger, and the subsequent argument between Cole and Lawler. The problem is that Cole is the dominating personality on commentary, when he's supposed to be play by play. Ask yourself a question, between John Madden and Al Michael's, who is the bigger personality? Obviously Madden, because he's the color commentator. Now compare that to Cole-Lawler. Lawler has no personality, so the time is almost completely devote to horrible Michael Cole jokes and personal opinions. So yes, a Lawler Heel run would certainly improve Raw Commentary.

The way i understand it they(the WWE) kinda want the commentators to be background noise so ppl focus on the wrestlers not the announcers. And i wouldn't call striker a heel commentator as much as just a weird sob who seems like hes dropping X during heel moments and is in love with them as a result.
