Quick Question for the Technologically Minded

Supposedly, one of my DVD players can play DIVX. I know that I need a DIVX codec to play avi files on my computer, but is there also a DIVX file extension? Or, can I just burn an avi file on DVD+R and play it on my DIVX-compatible DVD player?

I just put Avi files onto a USB and played it from there without doing Jack Shit,

i thought the file changes when you burn on to the disk?
you can play via usb or just burn using a burning program (should be a burn dvd tab). should play
