Puro fans, UNITE!

I made a few of these threads before. They don't seem to last long. Seems like we have more puro fans now than ever before on the board though, so that's cool. I imagine we haven't talked much about puro lately because I stopped cheerleading it mercilessly the last few months. I've been watching less and less wrestling over the last few months and haven't watched a NOAH, New Japan, AJPW, Dragon Gate, or DDT show probably since August now. I've got every major show since sitting on an HD, just don't have the motivation to go through it all yet.


Who is your favorite Japanese wrestler?
All Time: Kenta Kobashi
Current: Shinsuke Nakamura/Hiroshi Tanahashi/Daisuke Sekimoto

Who is your favorite gaijin wrestler?
All Time: Vader
Current: Prince Devitt

What's your favorite match?
Way too difficult. Here's a top five, in no particular ranked order...

AJW 11/20/94 Aja Kong vs. Manami Toyota
NOAH 3/1/03 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi
NJPW 4/29/96 The Great Muta vs. Jinsei Shinzaki
AJPW 6/8/90 Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Mitsuharu Misawa
AJPW 6/3/94 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Toshiaki Kawada

All of those are five star matches IMO.



Oh and DDT fucking rules. Easily some of the best in-ring stuff in Japan when guys like Sekimoto, HARASHIMA, Ibushi, Omega, Sato, and the recently retired Dick Togo were/are on, nobody puts on a better show in Japan today.

Omega has got to be one of the most underrated wrestlers in the business.

I think Cody Rhodes would benefit greatly if he went to Japan. He'd be able to continue to mature and grow in the ring. Maybe he could learn a move or two and add it to his repertoire.
 
CM motherfucking Punk. Just because I'd 'gasm at the thought of seeing him wrestle everyone from the junior aces in NOAH to the heavyweights in New Japan to fuckin' fatass Akebono in All Japan. I'm pretty sure the only stint he ever did in Japan was a short one with Zero-1 back when they had a working relationship with ROH in 02/03. He was gone from there by the time NOAH and ROH partnered up so he never wrestled for NOAH, NJPW, or AJPW. None of the majors. I'd love to see him wrestle everyone from KENTA, Marufuji, Aoki and Kotaro Suzuki to Tanahashi, Nakamura, Nagata, Tanaka, even some of the AJPW guys like Suwama and Minoru Suzuki.

Good shouts you guys. But you know me, I'm a shameless Justin Gabriel mark so I'd send him up there to kill it with the Super Juniors. I think his "Hybrid style of high flying technical ability" (thanks Byron Saxton) would work well up there because it's so similar (yet slightly different) to the strike and high impact style of Japan. Also, his lack of mic skills wouldn't hinder him as much as they would in Amerca. And then there's the possibility for me to have the markgasm to end all markgasms if Gabriel and Ibushi were in the same ring as eachother no matter what happens.

I don't see Tanahashi dropping the belt to Suzuki. He'll end 2011 as champion and probably end 2012 as the champion with the rate he's going.
 
KENTA is to be out of action for 6-7 months due to having surgery on his left knee due to a rupture of the cruciate ligament. This isn't good for NOAH.
 
Meh, they've survived without KENTA for the most part for the last few years, he's always injured or off wrestling somewhere else.

I haven't watched NOAH since like....March. So I'm waaaaaay behind there, last I saw was when Suzuki was Jr champ and Sugiura was still chipping away at Kobashi's title record.

Well 2011 is almost over so what's been your guys' favorite puro match of 2011? I'd have to say mine's Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetsuya Naito from 10/10/11.
 
I haven't seen anything from any company after August of this year, but from what I've seen in that first eight months, I'd still say my favorite puro match of the year was Eddie Edwards vs. Kotaro Suzuki in NOAH from January. They murdered each other. Literally, they're dead and have been replaced by android clones of themselves. But keep that on the down-low.

Close runner ups would include Tanahashi vs. Nakamura from Dontaku in May, PAC vs. Ricochet from last month in Dragon Gate (okay, one post-August match, but that's the only one I watched), and Tanahashi vs. Nagata from New Dimension in April. All of those matches rocked my damn socks off.

New Japan was by far the best promotion again this year. Best indy would be Dragon Gate. Shinsuke Nakamura is my pick for wrestler of the year in Japan as well.

Those are all off the top of my head.
 
I'd have to agree with you on best promotion. For me best indy promotion would have to be DDT since I don't watch Dragon Gate and know nothing about them. For wrestler of the year I have to go with Tanahashi. The man has been putting on great matches constantly.
 
Well Wrestle Kingdom VI just happened and here's the results in the spoilers just in case you haven't seen it yet.
1. Apollo 55 beat NRC for the Junior Heavyweight Titles following a forward rolling cradle from Taguchi to Richards (12:44)
2. Liger's team beat Taichi's team (10:18)
3. Okada beat YOSHI-HASHI with the rainmaker (4:37)
4. Blue Justice Army (Yuji Nagata and Wataru Inoue) vs. Masakatsu Funaki and Masayuki Kono
Masakatsu won it with a high kick to Wataru (6:34)
5. MVP and Benjamin beat Masato Tanaka and Yujiro Takahashi with MVP giving the irreversible crisis to Takahashi (9:41)
6. TenKoji beat Bad Intentions for the IWGP Tag Titles with Tenzan with a moonsault press on Bernard (12:40)
7. Goto beat Sugiura with a Shouten Kai (9:15)
8. Makabe beat Takayama with a King Kong Knee Drop (9:15)
9. Go Shiozaki and Naomichi Marufuji beat Shinsuke Nakamura and Toru Yano Shiozaki won it with the Go Flasher to Yano. (15:10)

I'm wanting to start watching NJPW regularly, instead of semi-keeping up. Any suggestions on a recent starting point?
