Pt 3: The Controversial - SmackDown Color Commentator Seat

Haha, Ok, this thread is about a bunch of people rather than just one.

As I recall, in the last ten years, only two men have color commentated for Raw, Jerry "The King" Lawler, and Paul Heyman. Coach was SORT OF another but King was always with him.

In comparison, for the same amount of time, Smackdown has had SIX colors! And with Tazz seemingly on his way out, this could easily be made seven (unless JBL returns to SD commentary).

Why has there been so many more colors on SD? Is it cursed? Do people get sick of being on the seemingly #2 show? Or is it just coincidence?

Does the lack of having regular commentators, especially in the last 18 months, hurt the product identity? Is it harder to focus on the wrestling when the voices are constantly changing?

Thoughts people!!

I have no idea why you wouldn't want to be a colour commentator on Smackdown at the moment especially when JR is the main commentator. It doesn't matter how good you are personally because he will always make you look good. As for why they have had so many CC's in the past, I truely have no idea. The only think I can think of is that The King is probably the best CC in the business and no one really comes close to him. Maybe the WWE is trying to get someone like The King onto Smackdown? However, people like Mick Foley and JBL were never really meant to be CC. Maybe they wouldn't even have been in this position if the WWE could find someone suitable enough to fill the position.

I agree partly with what you said. I think maybe WWE is trying to find someone who is "King-like", i.e. untouchable when it comes to CC. However I think they have found the man = Matt Striker.

I disagree with your idea that JBL is not meant to be CC. I think he was excellent, although if you're saying that maybe he didn't enjoy/want to do it then fair enough lol. Thanks for replying, hope u enjoy the thread.

Umm, I'm sure that all these color commentators from SD! leaving is all just a coincidence. Having J.B.L. as the color commentator was a very good idea, as it brought us 18 months of laughter. The team of Michael Cole and J.B.L. really worked wonders for SD! Mick Foley, on the other hand didn't do as good of a job that I thought he would have. Since he used to be a full time wrestler, who has graced us with many memories over the past decade or so, I thought he would have added a very unique style to the commentators booth. I was wrong! He could be compared to commentators, like Todd Grisham, Michael Cole, and Joey Styles, who never wrestled a day in their life.

I don't really think that the color commentators ALWAYS make a difference to an actual match itself. Unless, of course it's Jim Ross calling a very highly anticipated main event championship match. Whoever does replace Tazz, I wish him all the luck and hope that he stays in the commentators booth for long enough, so no one will have to even think that it's cursed.

Firstly I do believe constant changes behind the booth do affect the product, for so many years there was something strangely reassuring about turning on your T.V. every monday and knowing you would hear "The voice of Raw."
I personally hope JBL returns to the CC's chair, clearly the funniest CC is recent memory.

I meant that he was not meant to be CC because he was a wrestler. He didn't really train to be a CC. The same is true of Mick. He was a wrestler, he may be very literate but he was a wrestler first and foremost. You look at the King and no one really remembers his wrestling past, they remember the times he has entertained us as a CC.
