Ever had a Kung Pao Beef pizza?? Or how about a Chilli Dog pizza? Yeah, if you go back to my original post on page 3 or 4 I provided links to 2 crazy ass pizza joints here in Des Moines. One called "Big Tomato Pizza" and the other called "Fong's Pizza". Big Tomato prides itself on having the weirdest toppings in town and the worst service as a gimmick, and it's a walk up pizza joint that stays open on one of the downtown strips until 3 am so you can just get hammered on of the bars on that strip and walk over and get a slice of pizza with hot dogs, peas, carrots, broccoli, and cajun shrimp if you want.
Fong's is a Chinese/pizza shop on the main downtown strip of bars. They have put a twist on the pizza by using Chinese food as toppings and it works. It's some of the best pizza in town.
There are so many little family owned pizzeria's around here it's insane, this city was founded by the French but settled by the Italians you can really tell. On the south side where I live you might as well call it "Little Italy" because of the high concentration of Italian families and business owners, they even have a Festa Italiano every year that most of the city goes to. The oldest ones I know of are Noah's Ark that has been there for something like 85 years, and La Pizza House which has also been there about that long. Both still pack the parking lots and dish out tons of pizza every night. Des Moines is a very food heavy town, I once heard we have more eateries including fast food per person or per capita than anywhere else in the world, you might want to check that out though, I'm not so sure but I wouldn't be surprised.
