Peter Jackson's Older Films

Meat Boy

Dark Match Winner
I was wondering if anyone else on hear knew about Peter Jackson's first 3 films that he made way before Lord of the Rings. They Bad Taste Meet the Feebles and Dead Alive. These 3 were much different then the movies Peter jackson makes now. I liked all 3 of these movies a lot better than anything hes done recentlly. His were movies were cool, crazy, fun, gory, and keep you enteratined the whole time. These movies are harder to find I've seen Dead Alive in a few movie stores before but your best shot at getting Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles is Ebay. It's worth the money and it's something you want to show your friends

I've seen Bad Taste and Dead Alive (Braindead in the UK) and thought they were both brilliant. Before watching them, I had no idea who Peter Jackson was, but my sisters boyfriend at the time was a film nut and dug these films out in preparation for the Lord of the Rings films. I watched Bad Taste with him and we were laughing our asses off the whole way through, though I still prefer Braindead overall.

Will need to track these dvds down, those trailers have wet my appetite again!

I'm quite familiar with all of his early films as my friends and I were rabid horror fans growing up so we tried to get our hands on every classic movie we could read about. Jackson's early work is some of his best honestly.

Bad Taste is a fun blend of Sci-Fi with horror and comedy, Dead Alive is where he perfected his signature blend of horror and comedy and is one of the all-time classic zombie movies, while Meet the Feebles is one of the darkest and morbidly funny films I've ever seen.

Hey if you want to throw in Heavenly Creatures as well we should because that's probably Jackson's best early film before he took on the Lord of the Rings franchise. The comedy is stripped away and instead he details the horrifying descent into madness of two teenage girls who will do anything to remain best friends, including murdering their parents. Excellent acting, direction, writing, everything in that film is really superb.

Then of course we also have The Frighteners, which I saw years ago but really need to see again. I remember Michael J. Fox being great in it though as the smooth talking hustler who happens to see ghosts.

Peter Jackson, much like other directors who primarily made horror films before breaking through into mainstream commercial success (David Cronenberg, James Cameron), has a very rich backlog of films that any horror or comedy fans should enjoy.

Bad Taste was an absolutely shit film, and not in the good sense. If I had seen it first out of all of Jackson's films I wouldn't have given the two other films a chance. Meet The Feebles, in my opinion, is a criminally underseen cult classic that everyone should hold in just as high of a regard as the likes of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Pink Flamingos, and The Toxic Avenger. This leaves us Dead Alive/Braindead, the first Peter Jackson film I ever saw. When I first saw it more than fifteen years ago, I was a gore hound who was absolutely blown away by the sheer amount of blood, guts, and viscera in this film. While I've since seen more disturbing scenes in horror films, I don't think I've ever come across a one with more quantifiable gore than Dead Alive's lawnmower scene.

Sam Raimi did wonders by revisiting the genre that started his career (i.e. Drag Me To Hell). I hope Jackson decides to do the same thing one day.
