Overrated or Underrated: Men In Black

Overrated? Underrated? CORRECTLY RATED!?

  • Overrated. People say it's better than it actually is.

  • Correctly rated. They say what they see.

  • Underrated. This film doesn't get ENOUGH credit.

No idea why. Guess because I couldn't be bothered to talk about There Will Be Blood.

Saw it the other night. Thought it was fairly decent, certainly better than I remember it being. Can't remember whether people say whether it's great or shit. I think maybe it's credited as helping launch Smith to stardom. Unfortunately, I don't have my Will Smith timeline on hand; and I'm also not sure if that's a good thing. I suppose Ali was pretty good.

But on the whole, a pretty good sci-fi/comedy movie. Successful enough to receive a completely unnecessary follow-up with massive plot holes. It's quite funny, I suppose. Much funnier back in the nineties, I'd warrant.

I'll go with correctly rated. Nobody seems to have a particularly strong opinion of it and reckon it's fairly decent. Yeah, I'll go with that.

The Greatest Sci-Fi Films Never Made says that Men In Black is made up of all the good bits of better films, that have never been made. Every good idea was apparently, at some point, part of a better film.

I haven't watched it since about 2000 when they released the special edition DVD. Back when special editions were special. I also believe it's the first DVD to offer you the choice of one disc or two. Fact fans.

Overall I enjoyed it then. I'd probably view it differently now. It's certainly not a bad film, but I'm sure it's been eclipsed many times over since 1997. But it's never going to be held in such high regard as other Sci-Fi films or comedy films. But in that genre called Sci-Fi Comedy it's probably near the top. I can't think what's better than it at the moment, but I can think what's worse.

Will Smith rules.

I think it's rated correctly. It was never meant to be an epic comedy or an epic sci-fi movie, just a fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously and lets Will Smith be himself, and that's exactly what it did. There's solid comedy, the plot is strong, Tommy Lee Jones is an excellent straight man, and the special effects are cool. There's really not much missing here. It'll never be on the greatest movies of all time list but it's not supposed to be. It was meant to be a summer hit that got good merchandising out of it, and it nailed that. Rated correctly.

This is a hard one.

I saw this at the movie theater and fucking loved it. I got my mom to buy the VHS when it was released and loved it again.

However, how fucking long ago was that? Probably around ten years now, huh? And I don't think I watched that movie since like a couple of months after I got the video of it. I believed I saw number 2 once and I know for a fact I never checked out number three.

So, I loved this movie when it came out, but how do I feel about it now? Lol, I really don't know. I mean, if I haven't had the desire to watch it in like ten years, then I must not care for it. I don't know.

Overall though, I'm voting it's rated correctly. I mean, I don't think it's a film that gets that much love, or gets a lot of hate. You never really hear anything about it.

And Will Smith does indeed rule. It took me years to forgive him for Wild Wild West though. What a piece of garbage that was. Even as a kid I found that shit boring as all hell.

The movie got a lot of hype when it came out. So I was pretty excited to watch it. I watched it when it came out on video, sat down with my siblings, put it in, and sat down. About an hour through, I hadn't laughed. By the end, I was so disappointed, I felt like getting my money back. It was horrible, not funny, and kind of gross. The only thing good about it, was that it was better than the sequel that for some reason I tried to watch. However, the animated series was actually quite good. Will Smith is a great actor, this was not a great movie. Overrated when it came out, and now no one cares.

Underrated. Because people saw Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith and went into it expecting something TOTALLY different than what they got. I, on the other hand, love it til this day. It's funny and doesn't take itself too seriously... I mean, their boss is Rip Torn... What the hell did you guys expect? haha
