Oscar Nominations

Coco

Mid-Card Championship Winner
Can't be arsed with non-spam. I'm sure when I work up some energy, I'll use this thread to rage about how overrated American Hustle is, and how Captain Phillips and DBC aren't Best Picture material.

The nominations this year are underwhelming. My theory is that most of the nominations are so conservative/vanilla because of how out-of-sync last year's Oscar nominations were with those of the guilds (looks like someone worked overtime this year to make sure that political bullshit once again reigned supreme). Oh, well, we'll always have 2012/13.

Haven't seen Her, but glad its getting the noms. Big time fan of Jonze. Though I might be a bigger Kaufman fan, who can ever tell.

I'd give anything for Her to win best picture, but unfortunately I think that belongs to 12 Years A Slave. I love that Sally Hawkins received a nomination.

American Hustle did not deserve so many nominations. I would've switched Bale for Phoenix. Renner was better than Cooper anyway.

Renner deserved a nom, but I have the biggest mancrush on Bradley Cooper...so I can't comment on which of the two was better.

Best supporting actor is the most interesting category for me. I haven't seen Captain Philips, so I can't comment on whether or not that guy deserves the award, let alone the nomination, but Hill, Fassbender, or Leto could win and I'd be satisfied. Cooper was good, but I was very aware I watching Bradley Cooper when I was watching American Hustle, and the other three actors managed to transcend their real life personas in their films.

I'm also happy to see Gravity get nominations all over the place. I'd love to see Cuaron win best director, but I wouldn't hate seeing Jonze win either.

What in particular do you find unappealing about this year?

Mostly the hard on they have for American Hustle, however after taking a closer look I realized there wasn't much else I got upset about. I think I probably just don't like award shows at all, I think it's great for all the talented people who actually get the praise they deserve but I guess it's just not my thing.

The abundance of American Hustle nominations is obnoxious, but it was a very good film. Overrated, but good. I'd be surprised if it took home more than a couple awards.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with the nominations. Some really great films got several nominations when they could have just as easily been snubbed, like Her or Blue Jasmine.

12 Years A Slave wasn't any better than any other slavery film I've seen, probably less engaging than most.

Her should win, with Gravity as runner up, if only because of how amazing it looked.

Only two performances really stood out to me this year - Joaquin Phoenix in Her and Jared Leto in Dallas Buyer's Club. All the others, especially everyone in American Hustle, did nothing for me.

For best actor, DiCaprio is long overdue the win.

Bale was fine, nothing amazing. Like has been already said, American Hustle is super overrated. Ejiofor was fine, but too restrained. Bruce Dern was really good, but there's only so much grumpy old man you can do before it gets boring. McConaughey was pretty incredible, but DiCaprio still deserves it for such an incredibly energetic, charasmatic performance.

The award has had Leto's name on it for months. Though, like you said, Hill and Fassbender would be good choices too.

My mom says as long as DiCaprio hangs around Scorsese, the Academy will snub him.

Looks like someone woke up on the snobby side of the bed.
