Why does putting [Official] in front of your thread title make you think that it's either true, or that much more important? Just curious.. for official reasons.

Because officially it means if another thread is made on the same topic it officially qualifies as being shitter than the official one, thus becoming unofficial, and when the two are merged the official one is the lead post.

Or for poops and giggles. I'm not sure which.

But if the first thread started doesn't have [Official] in front of it, and the second thread on the same subject does.. then they merge.. the first thread remains the topic, while the second [official] thread just looks like someone adding a headline to their single post.
