Nightwish

I have been listening to Nightwish a lot recently, and through I'd see what everyone else around the forum thinks about them. They have a great sound between their talented singers, guitarists, drummer, and keyboarder. I own two of their cd's (Dark Passion Play and Once) although I like enough of their material to buy several more.

This is my favorite song of theirs. Granted it's from their newest album and a lot of people prefer the previous singer to the current one, but it's still their best song to me. I also like their cover of Phantom of the Opera and their beautiful instrumentals.


So what are your thoughts on this band? Do you like them, why or why not? What is your favorite song of theirs? Also, do you like Tarja or Anette better and why?

I love Nightwish they are one of the most talented and original bands in the world. Dark Passion Play is a pure masterpiece of an album.

My favorite song by them , is probably hmmmm....... either "Bye bye beautiful" like you said , or maybe "Escapist" which was like a B-Side to Dark Passion Play you can find on iTunes. You could probably check it out on youtube 1st.

I prefer Anette over Tarja TBH

Eagerly awaiting the new album "Imaginarium" and the full length movie that goes with it , but thats not untill next year so its gonna be a while

Nightwish is one of my favorite bands and End of an Era is my favorite Live Album ever.

Favorite song: Ghost Love Score, Poet and the Pendulum, Nemo (greatest symphonic metal song ever IMO), Wishmaster (entire album) well, everything honestly...

Annette or Tarja: Both, each is good in her own way, Tarja's got more power in her voice, but Annette has more "energy" and interacts more with the live crowd

I will be honest, I do not know very much about Nightwish. One of my friends who I used to work with was a very big fan of theirs, and symphonic metal in general.

He showed me the song "Nemo" saying it is one that I would like, and he was right, I do really like that song. If there other material is as good as that then I think they are a band I would enjoy.

The only other bit of information I know (or think I know) about them is that the original singer is supposed to have become too arrogant so they kicked her out? I am unsure if this is true though....

She did have a vey good voice though.

To answer your question, Naitch, they kicked Tarja out due to drama that she and her husband caused for the band. I suppose Nightwish isn't that well known around this forum. I am surprised that no massive debate got started over whether Annette or Tarja is better. On other sites people get into arguments over that all the time. I personally like both of them. They each have different styles that benefited the band in different ways. Anyways, I mentioned their instrumentals in my opening post so now I will share one. It's called Last of the Wilds.

This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I could listen to it on repeat for hours. The celtic feel to it is very different compared to most Nightwish material. It's easily one of my favorite instrumentals due to the fluctuation between heavy and soothing that it does. It was also a big part of why I bought my copy of the Dark Passion Play CD.

I was introduced to Nightwish about 2 years ago... since then I've gotten into all the Symphonic Metal bands I could find. But Nightwish is as iconic to SM as Metallica is thrash.

I like both styles/lead singers, but Tarja set the band apart as something truly unique. An opera singer, combined with a great male vocalist like Marco, and them both employing a great callback in the songs they share together made them such an incredible band. However hearing Marco's softer side was truly surprising. He's an incredible vocalist in his own right. Really, even now they have a great diversity.

If you like them, I could point you towards other bands in their genre that are also great. Like Epica, Sirenia, & Within Temptation.

Actually, considering the site we're on, check this out. This was the tribute I made for Randy Savage using Within Temptation's song Iron, which is another Nightwish-esque band that are prominent in the Symphonic Metal genre.

I absolutely love Annette's voice.

Haven't heard Tarja sing so I can't compare as to who I like better.
