New Wolverine Movie NOT a prequel

For many, it was assumed that director James Mangold's upcoming The Wolverine would act as followup to 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Given that this new film is set in Japan, coupled with the after-credits sequence of Logan in Japan from the previous film, it was widely assumed that The Wolverine would be a direct sequel leading up to Bryan Singer's X-Men from 2000.

However, Mangold recently said this isn't the case. In fact, The Wolverine isn't a prequel at all. "Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all," the filmmaker told Empire. "Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there's a tremendous sense of isolation for him."

Having said that, there will still be some sequences set during World War II, but the rest of the film will take place post-X-Men: The Last Stand.

"That's something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline," Mangold continued. "I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it. The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that's such an interesting part of Logan's character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie."

While most X-Men films have been categorized as "comic book action adventure," Mangold said this latest entry is more of a "Japanese noir picture with tentpole action in it."

The Wolverine stars Hugh Jackman, and is scheduled for release on July 26, 2013.

Interesting to know this will take place after X3 Last Stand, hopefully this is much better than origins.

I don't know how anything can follow the absolute disaster that was X3.

From what I've read, it's gonna be a stand-alone film in the same universe that happens to take place after the events in X3, rather than be a spin-off sequel. It'll probably make reference to whats taken place in the other four films, but this is pure Wolverine. Not an X-Men film. And it looks like it's gonna be pretty sweet. And if it makes up for Origins, I'm happy.

But Last Stand was a fucking abomination of what could have been a good story. Though that said, I can't decide if I hate that or Origins more.

Last Stand was shit, and that's coming from a guy that didn't follow the comics. Origins was aight at best, but hopefully this sequel will make up for the previous films. I won't get my hopes up though.

This will probably be the last Hugh Jackman Wolverine film. I didn't hate him as Logan, but I'm good with this being it.

Can anyone say...

One can hope.

I like the idea of taking the Wolverine character and dropping off in a time unfamiliar to us with characters we won't necessarily recognize right away. Reminds me of one of the best books I ever read...

I didn't mind X3. Sure it was a clusterfuck but I don't hate it as much as other people. Also Brett Ratner isn't that bad.

P.S. Yes Nick I would mark out for Tom Hardy Wolverine.

I don't have much hope for this movie, until Fox can prove otherwise. This news, coupled with Matthew Vaughn leaving Days of Future Past, has me real worried about the franchise overall. DoFP has potential to be awesome, as long as they don't hire back fucking Brian Singer.

Probably going to suck, but I thought that First Class more or less killed the original X-Men trilogy continuity anyway

This will probably be the last Hugh Jackman Wolverine film. I didn't hate him as Logan, but I'm good with this being it.

One can hope.

I see him donning a tux and drinking martinis in the future. Haven't seen him crack a lot of puns/innuendos aside from his Inception line, so that could be fun to see.
