NCAAF Thread - 2009

1) How could no one speak of the amazing that is the Razorback's turnaround? We went from barely beating Western Illinois last year to trouncing Missouri State. 48-10, and with the team looking remarkably strong. Mallett looked great, except for a few throws that were saved by the top of the line Wide Receivers. He was 17 of 22, but honestly he should have been 12 of 22. Wilson looked okay, that interception didn't help any. Our defense also needs some fine tuning, it allowed some big gaps in the running game.

I'm just going to say this. 21 points in the first quarter, 48-10 final. First kickoff of the season returned for a touchdown. Fuck yeah.

2) BYU caught Oklahoma State. Lulz.

3) Ohio State almost couldn't beat Navy.

4) Ole Miss was struggling against Michigan? What the fuck? Oh, right. Houston Nutt. My bad.

I'm a big Penn State fan and I see some big things from them this season, but I'll talk PSU some other time, because right now I wanna talk about how awesome the game between Miami and Florida St was. The game was back and forth through out and Miami had a goaline stand to end the game. Miami is my sleeper pick of teams not ranked in the top 25 to surprise some people and have a good season. And it started with that victory over FSU. Jacory Harris kicked some major ass in the 2nd half and really showed some great poise from the QB position. I see big things from that kid.

Screw it, time to shove the Cincinnati/Big East propaganda down everyones throats. It's nice to see the the Bearcats didn't skip a beat in week one and absoltuely walloped the holy hell out of the Scarlett Knights. We'll see how "real" the Cats are come week 3 when they go out to Oregon State. The Beavers will be looking to avenge the 35-3 beatdown at the Nip a few years back. If the Cats can go across the country and win, then they might run the table.

Also, The Big Ten and the ACC are the two most over rated conferences in the country by far. No one from week one looked impressive, and hopefully Ohio State gets smashed this weekend by the Trojans, and hopefully removes themselves from the title picture. It is impossible for me to comprehend how in the hell the Suckeyes stay so highly rated, when they are complete and utter shit.

I hope the ultimate doomsday Scenario happens this year in the BCS, where all the BCS Conferences have a champion with one loss, a Big East team goes undefeated, and Boise and BYU go undefeated.

I agree with the Big Ten comment and the ACC comment...

Anyways several Big East teams looked good.. USF did, Pitt and Cinci also did.. If Pitt gets solid QB play they will be tough to beat because of their depth on defense and there all around speed. I still can't see a Big East tean go undefeated but I can see a couple with one loss.

Now I believe OSU has a chance to beat USC, even though its slim. Pryor has to be key and Berkley has to stink up the joint. I still see USC winning because of there athletes at several key positions.

Also the Navy game was close because teams defending the option for the first time in years can be rough. Especially because they use old school option not the shotgun spread that is infamously know in College Football today...

I am an FSU fan dont get me wrong, but I think that they should be out of top 25, as despite playing a great game they got upset at home, hence the need to be booted.

Miami and Georgia Tech play tonight. It is a battle for ACC supremecy, or so we've been told. Miami is the lower ranked team, but it's a home game for them, so it's pretty much a toss up.

GT has a very unconventional offense that heavily relies on the triple option and the running game while having virtually no pass game at all. They have a pretty solid defense as well, especially the D-Line.

Miami is very talented, like always, but I'm not sure if they're experienced/disciplined enough to take this one. Their QB (Harris I believe) has a lot of potential, but is young and inconsistent.

I see GT taking this one in a close game.

Miami was very impressive last night against Georgia Tech. The game was never even close. Jacory Harris played great and he is quickly becoming an elite quarterback. The next two weeks the Canes are at Virginia Tech and then home against Oklahoma, but after that they shouldn't have any more challenges until November when they go to UNC. I see Miami only losing 2 games at the most and I believe they will win the ACC. It's been a few years but the Canes are quickly returning back to their dominant ways.

Miami's season is all going to ride on how Harris plays. If he continues to play like he did the last two weeks, it is going to be tough for anyone to beat them. They have tremendous team speed and seem very motivated this season. They have all of the pieces there, and I think this is the year they finally put them all together.

In GT's case, I think this game showed that you can be decent if you are a one dimensional team, but you are never going to be a national contender without a passing game, it just isn't going to happen.

While I believe the ACC to be highly, highly over rated, VT looked damn tough last night against a resurgent Nebraska program that might be one or two years away from "getting it". Likewise with Miami, the resurection of that program appears to be happening right before our eyes. With the ACC as weak as it is, they might win the thing this year, but they have a tough, tough test and measuring stick this weekend against the Sooners.

USC has no one to blame for their ineptitude aside themselves. How in the hell you go 2500 miles across the country, play a top 10 team (yes over rated, but the rankings say they are) and win, and then get beat by Washington. Pete Carrol will bitching come December when the Trojans are left out of the BCS once again, and he can look back to this game as to why.

It's nice to see the BYU's and Utah's of the world get beat, the more they lose, the more silly the arguments of such and such obscure conference deserves an automatic bid gets weaker and weaker. These programs might get one or two good teams every few years, but they simply can't hang with the big boys over the course of a few seasons. The Power catches up, the Seniors of these schools go away, and we are left with what was there before, an average Division 1 team that gets lucky every once in a while.

VT always has a chance to win the ACC because of their defense, special teams, and coaching. If Tyrod Taylor can figure it out, they should win the conference.

I really like what I've seen from Miami thus far. Harris has been one of the best QBs in the nation and their defense is much improved from last year.

USC has no one to blame for their ineptitude aside themselves. How in the hell you go 2500 miles across the country, play a top 10 team (yes over rated, but the rankings say they are) and win, and then get beat by Washington. Happens to Pete Carroll every year, he loses to a below average Pac-10 team that has no business beating them. Locker is a very good quarterback, but USC should've won that game. They are going to need Barkley back ASAP, or they could be in some trouble.

Pretty surprised at how handily BYU got beat. I thought that if they lost, it'd at least be competitve. They are still a very good team, but I think FSU is a little underrated.

Also, it appears that USF QB Matt Grothe has torn his ACL. That's a huge loss for them. Over the past few years, his been one of the best QBs in the Big East as a guy who could either pass or run the ball. Without him, I think that USF's chances of making a run at the Big East title are out of the question.

I really think that Miami has a chance of running the table. I love the canes, and was wondering when they would make a resurgence. I though it might be a year away after beating FSU, but. With an impressive win against GT. They have a shot this year. While I didn't know if they could beat the Gators if they made it that far. I think they would stand a good chance after watching Tennessee give them issues yesterday. Though we have two tough challenges coming up with VT, and Oklahoma. I can see us winning both of those games. VT has been run on very effectively by Alabama, and Nebraska. Miami has two talented running backs in James, and Cooper. As well as Harris who continues to impress me. I think they can win this game by two touchdowns. Now with Oklahoma, I think this will be the biggest challenge that they face this year. It's up in the air if Bradford will be back, even then he will be some what rusty considering his injury. I think the Canes can win that game as well. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Jevan Snead-7 of 21: This guy is supposed to be in the hunt for the Heisman. He was 12 of 22 against Memphis. I've seen him play twice this season & he looks overrated to me. He looked like JaMarcus Russel tonight! They both completed 7 passes this week. I'll with hold further judgement until I see more of him. But, he looks over rated. Any Ole Miss fans care to change my mind?

Coming from somebody that goes to Ole Miss, I have to say I was disappointed in the way we played last night. While I have to give credit to the South Carolina defense, we blew some big opportunities. Our playcalling was questionable as Nutt kept running Bolden through the middle and not getting any yards. We didn't get McCluster going until the fourth quarter which we should have done earlier. Snead is a good quarterback but when he gets pressure, he throws the ball too high or too wide. Our defense was great and I don't expect that to change. We need to work on a few things on offense but we will be fine. We still have a good shot to go to the SEC Championship Game but we need to beat Alabama.

Good game today for my BC Eagles defeating Florida State, was glad to finally see a BC game on a major network this year, for some reason I haven't been able to see many of the games this year. Our defense looked good, totally dominating the Seminoles when they were in the red zone. We slacked a bit int he second half and the 'Noles came back to tie the game, but after a great run from Montel Harris, who had another great game with 179 yards and 2 TDs. 25 year old Dave Shinskie has turned out to be a blessing in disguise at QB, as he had another very good game, throwing for 2 TDs while really managing the offense to great success. With the way BC played in this game I think BC will definitely be contenders in the ACC now, though they have a tough schedule approaching them. Clemson losing to Maryland today helps matters as well.

Another great week of college football.

This was a pretty good week in College Football. Was glad to see BC beat FSU, mainly because I don't like FSU :). My Nittany Lions finally played like a top 25 team in the second half at Illinois. I think the loss to Iowa is what they needed to "remember" how to play football for 60 minutes.

The only game I didn't like was the ND-Washington game. Don't like ND, and it pains me to see them win, period. But what can you do?

Here's hoping next week continues the greatness (and turbulence) of the 2009 season!

I was happy to see LSU win today, though it was the 2nd week in a row where they got EXTREMELY lucky. I mean, seriously... both games should have been cakewalks, but LSU's coach, Les Miles, can be such a moron sometimes. I really, really, REALLY miss Nick Saban.

Anyway, looking forward to the Florida game next week; I should be going. LSU will probably get their asses kicked, but I'm hoping they can at least keep it close and perhaps turn the game into a shoot out.

We played good and bad against Vanderbilt last night. Our offense started going early unlike the South Carolina game and our defense was great as usual. Snead really needs to cut down on his interceptions because he felt too comfortable when we were up 23-0 and tried to gunsling it like Favre. I wasn't too impressed at how we ended the game so we need to step it up if we're going to beat Alabama next week. For us to win, we have to be consistent on both offense and defense and that means no turnovers from Snead and we should have a decent chance to win.

After five weeks of College football, and about a hundred hours of watching Football throughout the week, a clearer title picture is beginning to play itself out.

In my opinion, there are 6 teams with at least an argument that could be made for them to belong in the Championship game.

There are three teams that are clearly above and beyond everyone at this point, and those three include Florida, Texas and Alabama. Out of those three, Alabama is the best team in the country right now, based on the quality of opponent that they have played to date.

The 2nd tier of three I believe to be Boise St., Cincinnati, and USC. USC lost one game without their starting quarterback, and they are bound to get some sort of sympathy voting if the above three teams lose one game.

The Ultimate doomsday scenario for the BCS would be for Boise St and Cincinnati to go undefeated. Boise St. would be damn near close to a 25 game winning streak, and to shut them out again would be an injustice of epic proportions.

Then you have the UC Bearcats, and despite what I know most of you feel about the Big East, the Bearcats are a BCS school. If the UC Bearcats run the table, and are the only BCS team to not lose a game, and don't get in, then the BCS will blow up. Boise State will garner attention, but a BCS school like the Bearcats getting shafted will open a lot of eyes. The BCS went threw this before with Auburn, and can't afford it to happen again.

As far as the top teams, here are my rankings, sure to piss those off that "know" better.

1. Alabama: Based on the quality of teams they've played, they are the best team in the country last night. I give bonus points to teams that play big teams out of conference as opposed to beating up on small teams in state for warm up games.

2. Florida: I'm tempted to rank them lower, but they are the defending champions. To date, this team hasn't looked as good as they did last year. They are beating teams that barely qualify as Division 2 teams. I hate the fact that big teams like Florida play Florida International or Souther Charleston or whatever when they could play a non conference team from another BCS division.

3. Texas: Again, not overly impressed with this team to date, due to the inferior schedule. However, they are essentially the same team from the end of las tyear, and until they get beat, they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

4. Cincinnati: Yup, my Bearcats. Yes, I am a homer, and yes I am a Big East apologist. This team is fast, and has the speed necessary to compete with teams from the faster conferences, and has a great bend but not breaking defense. The offense will put points up on anyone in the country on any given night.

5. Boise St.: The unfortunate problemw ith Boise is the schedule they play, which isn't their fault. They beat a damng ood Oregon team at home, but prett much, other teams are afraid to play the Broncos anywhere.

6. Virginia Tech: I'm tempted to rank them a lot higher, but I hold the ACC in low regard. I'm not a fan of that conference myself, but Va. Tech has a crazy good defense. They played a damn good gamea gainst Alabama, and they still have an outside chance at sniffing the National Title game if the cards fall right.

7. USC: A bad loss against Washington will keep them out of the title game once more. Yes, they lost without their starting Quarterback,b ut if you can win a game with out a third game freshman, then you don't deserve to win. Now USC is playing in the inferior and vastly over rated Pac 10, and getting cheap wins in the Mickey Mouse Conference won't impress me.

8. Houston: Yes, they had a bad, if not flat out terrible loss to UTEP, but for this team to get bounced out of the top 25 based on that is flat out insulting to me. They beat Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, two teams from arguably the best division of the best conference in College Football,a nd then got caught in a trap game. I put Houston up against anyone right now.

9. Miami. The Hurricanes are a damn good team as well. They played a bear of a schedule, and have come out 3-1. 3-1 against ranked teams to start the season is damn good. The Only reason they are not higher, is because I'm just not sure on how good a team led by a sophomore can be.

and I'm done for now.

The new Top 25 had me surprised. Teams like Boise St., Cincinnati, and TCU getting top 10 spots is nothing new. Them all getting in at the same time is, however. I like it. I never went to school, and the closest thing to a "hometown team" is Penn St. If Boise St. continues to tear up the opposition, is there a chance they finally get into a title game? It'd be nice, but I doubt it.

I'm already dying to see how the Heisman Trophy voting comes together. With Bradford missing time, I'd guess he's out, and who knows what will happen with Tebow. I'd guess he doesn't have a shot if he misses more than a week.

Anyway else see the Dez Bryant thing? Apparently he is suspended for the rest of the season for lying about going to Deion Sanders house. This is a big blow to whatever was left of OKST's season. Bryant is the top WR in the country and is still projected as a top 10 pick, but this situation is just very strange.

Even though I predicted Alabama would win, I was disappointed at how we played especially on the offensive side of the ball but I have to give credit to Alabama's defense. They pressured Snead all day and didn't let Bolden or McCluster beat them. Snead's last three games has me wondering if he's really a good quarterback as everybody says he is and how good will he be the rest of the season.

At this point, we have a near 0% chance of reaching the SEC Championship game because we need to beat LSU and Auburn and have Alabama lose three conference games which I don't think is going to happen. If we lose against either Auburn or LSU, then I don't see us going to even the Cotton Bowl and we can't forget about Tennessee either. Our defense is great but if Snead and the offense don't get it together, we could be looking at a 7-5 or an 8-4 season.

I was hoping Oklahoma was gonna pull it off but their screwed with that garbage backup QB of theirs. And as far as a SC upset goes, that aint gonna happen. It's a close game now 13-6 but Garcia is playing like he's scared and not confident. I gotta say Spurrier is 1 of the most overrated College Coaches ever, he hasn't really done jack for SC and since he left Florida. Im predicting Florida drops to #2 when the new polls come out because of their scare against a mediocre Razorbacks Team. Theres a very good chance Florida/Bama will happen 3 times this year with the regular season game, SEC Championship and National Championship. I dont think Texas or USC is good enough, but Texas gets a slight edge over USC imo.

So the first BCS standing are out, and surprisingly enough, I think they nailed it on the head so far. The remaining seven undefeated teams make up 7 of the 8 top spots. USC being at #7 is amazing to me,a nd I'm glad. Losing to a shit Washington team shouldn't earn them the #4 spot in the country ahead of undefeated teams, despite what the "analyst" believe.

Florida at #1, no big surprise. I personally feel Bama is the #1 team in the ccountry, but Florida gets the benefit of the doubt for being the defending champions. Texas really hasn't done much for me this year as far as impressing me, but playing in the Big 12, I get why they are that high.

Boise St. at #4 is amazing to me, but unfortunately for them, the remainder of their schedule is soft. This isn't a knock on the Broncos, but the Bearcats, Iowa and TCU are all going to pass Boise if they all win out.

As far as the breakdown by power conference

SEC: 4
Big 12: 3
Big East: 3
Big Ten: 4
Pac 10: 3
ACC: 3

Other: 5

Aside from the Big 10 getting four teams in, I think the breakdown is quite nice. So week one, no bitching from me, but that's not to say what I will be saying come the first weekend of December.

Boise State is almost in a lose-lose situation here. If they lose one game, then their BCS chances are almost done. If the win out, they have to hope that either two of the top three lose a game and since their schedule is soft, they also have to worry about the teams below passing them.
