Names of Yesteryear

On that note, how about this guy from the mid-90s? Lud Vig Borga. The man that ended Tatanka's undefeated streak. I'm pretty sure he's involved in politics now in Finland. Didn't last too long in the WWF, I think he was pretty injury prone.

Oh, you've reminded me of my first heel that I loved to hate when I first started watching WCW...

He was feuding with Sting and was just a great and believable monster (to this day I wonder would a certain Mr Goldberg would have been taken to WCW hearts so readily if it hadn't been for more than a passing resemblance to "The Russian Nightmare").

Nikita was awesome. I just had to make this comment since you posted him. Many years ago, I worked as a telemarketer. I had a name pop up on my screen: Nikita Koloff. I damn near pissed myself.

I actually got him on the phone, and being the nervous little fanboy that I was, I stammered a bit, asked him if this was THE Nikita Koloff (yeah, eloquent right) and when he said yes, I said I had called to telemarket him for (whatever it was we were marketing) but I didn't have the heart to. lol He thanked me kind of half-heartedly and ended the call. (I just couldn't telemarket Nikita Koloff, for fuck's sake. That would have been blasphemy.)

I jotted the address down just to see if it was true, did some research, and wouldn't you know it, the address I had was in the same area as his school so I knew it was him. That was way back in 98 I believe.

I had another name or two pop up here and there, but couldn't confirm any of them. Scott Levy (Raven's real name) was one I got, but I'm sure there's more than one of those out there. But how many damn Nikita Koloff's are there in the world?

To add another name to the mix here, I used to enjoy watching the team of Tom Zenk and Rick Martel, the Can-Am Connection. I remember asking myself (when Martel broke apart from the team to become the Model) why they would break up such an awesome team. I know now, as it boosted Martel's singles career, but back then I was so disappointed.

Good thread.

I'm gonna do with Scott Norton. This guy was huge. He was a big star in Japan, but just an NWO thug in America. I think he could have been great with the right push.

There are a few names from the past that spring to mind that don't get a great deal of mention or recognition for their contributions to the wrestling business, among them being...
Tony Garea. mostly a tag team specialist, Garea achieved his greatest fame as a 5 time WWF tag title holder, although I do remember a time when Garea was given a push as a contender to the WWF championship when the title was held by none other than "Superstar"Billy Graham. Not the biggest guy or the most colorful, Garea was, nevertheless, a good in ring worker and an all around sure hand inside the ropes.
Another that comes to mind is Big Bob Duncum, a guy that was an excellent performer inside the ring, had great timing, was big and athletic, plus was underated as a promo guy.

Ray"the crippler" Stevens also comes to mind as a performer who was truly great inside the ring, could work effectively as either a face or a heel, and was an excellent promo man.

Glacier- The Sub-Zero knockoff in WCW. Being a kid i always admired his costume. I read that his suit cost $35,000. Another example of Bischoff pissing away money.

I was watching The Hulk Hogan Anthology and during his initial title celebration Ivan Putski showed up. I've read about his successes prior to this time but this was when I started wrestling and I didn't see much of Putski after this.

I was also reading the Remembering he Jobbers thread when I recalled a guy from circa 2000 in WWF called Just Joe. He was a messenger type guy that hung backstage and spread gossip to the superstars. I remember Stone Cold giving him a whooping one time. If anyone asked his name he would reply Joe... Just Joe. His tron was lame, It featured him with a speech bubble coming out of his mouth saying ''Dont Shoot The Messenger!'' Lame but somehow awesome. He didnt wrestle much, mainly on Metal or Jakked!

Ahhh yeah I remember Just Joe, what a strange gimmick that was?? He wasn't appalling in the ring, which surprised me and he ended up in TNA when that promotion first started.

He wrestled as one half of the "Red Shirt Security" along with Kevin Northcutt, who were the heel enforcers for Don Callous. Joe used the ring name Joe E Legend. I am pretty certain he was involved in that Celebrity Wrestling that ran for 1 series in England a few years ago, along with D'Lo Brown and Roddy Piper.

"Captain Redneck" Dick Murdoch: Great brawler but also had the ability to work a technical style if need be. His team with Adrian Adonis is in my opinion one of the most underrated of the past 30 years.

"Dirty" Dutch Mantell: One of my favorite Memphis guys and also one of the hairiest wrestlers ever !

One of us is confused. I thought Kevin northcutt's partner in red shirt security was Ryan Adams, and just Joe was Joe hitchens.

If fact, I am sorta sure of it.

In any case, a's far a's names go, how about some of my faves from the past, like:

Pork chop cash
Col. Buck robley
Iron mike sharpe
And, of course,
Exotic Adrian Street

"The Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez: Another in a long line of guys that came out of West Texas State University the Bull was a very solid mid-carder and good worker !

wow.... the ice man and chris adams.... definately names that havent popped into my head in forever.... i remember ice man being a pretty good heel in GCW (global championship wrestling/uswa). and you're right with adams, pretty solid in the ring and easy to get behind.

another couple names that stick out from that time are "crocodile" bill dundee and "hot stuff" eddie gilbert.... dundee and lawler had a great feud and some pretty good matches.... and looking back on it, eddie gilbert was an amazing heel who i think a lot of todays heels could take some notes from.

awesome thread

speaking of the Iceman...do any of you remember the famous "oreo cookie" angle in the UWF/Mid South promotion he had?
basically he was teaming with Chris Adams in there tag team title tournament, and ends up turning heel on Adams after they beat Steve Williams and Ted DiBiase. Adams has to choose another partner to continue in the tournament and selects another black wrestler named Savannah Jack. Iceman gets pissed with this and starts calling Jack an Uncle Tom and an oreo cookie for teaming with "that white boy". he then starts showing up at Jacks matches and starts throwing oreo cookies at him!!! pretty edgy stuff for the 80's.
