Most underrated or overlooked matches?

After watching the Savage vs. Warrior match from Wrestlemania WM7 again the other day I realized just how great this match was. This was probably the first time I watched it in 10 years so I forgot about it. This match was amazing for so many reasons especially the story telling and overall work by both these guys. It had you on the edge of your seat the whole time and set the stage for a Savage face turn. Honestly I think this is in the top 5 Mania matches of all time. Really the only matches that I would put above it for sure is Bret vs. Austin, Steamboat vs. Savage and Angle vs. HBK. Other than that I don't think there are any for sure ones. There were some others that you could make a case for but not many. So despite this you don't hear a whole lot about it besides from some die hards atleast it seems that way to me, and if you do hear about it I don't think people give it its due and talk about how great it really was.

Another one for me is the triple threat match between Taker, Angle and The Rock from Vengance 2002. I maybe a little biased because I was in attendence that night but it was a great match especially the end. That ending was one of the most exciting endings I ever seen with so many false finishes, I had no idea who was going to win. One second you thought Taker the next Angle and the next The Rock they had you guessing the entire match. The Rock ended up pulling it out for his last title reign. One of the best if not the best triple threat match I ever seen.

I don't think Angle/Taker/Rock from Vengeance is underrated at all, as I see it regularly on peoples favourite matches of all-time, especially when it comes to triple threats. It was a great match though, one of my favourite of 2002.

Bret Hart vs. 1-2-3 Kid - Monday Night RAW, 7/11/94

It was nice to see this match had finally made a DVD, as it deserves to be seen by everybody. The match was for Bret's title and most people, including myself thought this was going to be a squash. Instead, the underdog in 1-2-3 Kid put on one hell of a show and gained the respect of the fans that night. The match told a great story, and shows how great Bret could make his opponents look. I'd go as far as to say it's one of the best matches in RAW history.

Diamond Dallas Page vs. Randy Savage - WCW Great American Bash 1997

This was one of the best matches of 1997. Page and Savage had a natural chemistry in the ring, and the build-up for this match had been intense. Savage was always known as a great worker in the ring, but I think this solidified Page as one of the best workers in the business for the next two years.

WWE Championship: Brock Lesnar & Paul Heyman vs. Edge

This match was from WWE's UK PPV Rebellion November 2002. Even though it was billed as a Handicap match with Paul Heyman being Lesnar's partner, he really didn't get a lot of ring time during it..as expected. I think it was a pretty good back and forth match. Back then it seemed to me like the WWE Title meant more IMO. Every match Brock was in just had that big feel to it. I'm not saying it's underrated, but I never heard it mentioned much on television here in the United States, so it's more like a forgotten match.

The most underated match that I've ever seen was a Fatal 4-Way Elimination Number 1 Contender's match for the WWE Championship on Smackdown.

December 5th, 2002. Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit vs. Edge vs. Eddie Guerrero.

Edge gets attacked prior to the match by Albert and is unable to wrestle, so it becomes a triple threat match. He eventually returns to the match.(At this time, Edge was red hot with popularity.)


Eddie is eliminated first by a Benoit Crossface.

Benoit is eliminated by an Edge spear.

Edge (with a bum leg) and Angle trade nearfall after nearfall and counter after counter until Angle hits the Angle Slam from the top rope and pins him to win the match.

It was an incredible match to watch. Pick up the Armaggedon 2002 dvd if you'd like to watch the match in it's entirety. It's an extra on the dvd. Highly recommended.

I'm going with my favorite match, which is the Undertaker Vs. Jeff Hardy Ladder match on Raw for the title. This goes down as my personal favorite match of all time. While I am no fool and I know the match doesn't compare to HBK vs. Hart, Hart Vs. Austin, Angle vs. HBK, ect this match just was so exciting and kept me on the edge of my seat.

People often dismiss ladder matches and anything Hardy does to be a gimmick and spotty but this match was great. Both men put out all the stops to make sure it was good and they did that. The match had some good spots, and the story behind it makes it even more great. This was Hardy's first real chance at getting at the top and it was this match that made me believe Hardy could be a maineventer someday. Fans were really on their feet during the match and it made Hardy seem like he had a chance. Hardy came so close so many times fighting his way with one of the best.

I loved the ending with Hardy finally earning Taker's respect with how he performed and his never quit attitude. This was Hardy's shinning moment for me and I credit this match(along with how popular he is)in helping him become a future mainevent and I think this match is often underlooked.

I think one match that was REALLY underrated & is one of my favorites was Jeff Hardy VS Shawn Michaels from RAW on February 11th, 2008. I saw as a passing of the torch from the high-flying innovator from the late 80s & early-90s to the high-flying innovator of the late 90s & early 00s.

For me, I would have to say the 1/26 episode of RAW where HBK defeated Cena. Even though Cena lost, I think it was Cena's best match to date and I haven't heard hardly anything about it

I would have to go with HBK vs. Shelton Benjamin from Raw 1/23/06. Only for the fact that the super kick on a mid air Benjamin was one of the sickest finishes to a match I ever saw.

Diamond Dallas Page vs Goldberg - WCW World Heavyweight Championship - Halloween Havoc 1998

At the previous PPV, Fall Brawl 1998, Diamond Dallas Page won the War Games and earned the right to challenge Goldberg for his championship at Halloween Havoc and although Diamond Dallas Page put up a good fight, he couldn't defeat Goldberg though but it showed that DDP was a serious contender and wasn't going away. This match to me, is the definition of a main event match. The ring introductions were awesome from Michael Buffer, the wrestler entrances, the crowd and the match itself were just awesome. I think it's overlooked simply due to the fact that it was a WCW match and WWE doesn't tend to revisit WCW footage on their shows and neither Goldberg or DDP had massive careers in WWF/E.

The first time WWE came to little Adelaide in South Australia back in 05' Eddie Guerrero teamed with someone (I forget at the moment, I was drinking) against Kurt Angle and someone( sorry, again I was drinking) it wasn't televised and by no means was it a classic but to me being my first live wrestling event it was an amazing match, Eddie kept pulling Kurts straps and slapping him with them so in an effort to stop it he pulled them down as he does when he's going for the ankle, so Eddie hit him with a sunset flip and pulled his tights down showing Angles ass to everyone in attendance, its probably been done a hundred times before but i'd never seen it, not the best but that was a great match for me.

Yes, it took place in may of '05 during the goldrush tournament that saw Lita betray Kane, letting Edge win. Which leads me to another underrated match: Edge vs. Matt Hardy at Summerslam '05.

I just got done watching a great match on the Saturday Night's Main Event DVD between Tito Santana vs Mr. Perfect for the Intercontinental Title.

This was an incredible back and forth match up. These two always put on a clinic when they went against each other.

3 matches come to mind...#1) Matt Hardy vs MVP for the U.S. title at the 2007 Great American Bash. Most people and I (I'm an MVP fan) thought it was Matt's time to shine. Sure the match ended with one of the lamest finishers in wrestling history "the playmaker," but every1 was into it especially with all the nearfalls. Definetly an instant classic! #2) Rey Mysterio and Billy Kidman vs The World's Greatest Tag Team for the WWE tag team titles at the 2003 Vengeance. These four tremendous athletes left nothing behind and even created some very innovative moves. The crowd was so into they really got on the ref's case after one of the many nearfalls. #3) Same ppv: The Big Show vs Angle vs Lesnar for the WWE title. Angle and Lesnar are two of the greatest pure wrestlers anywhere and The Big Show is a great athlete for his size. Typical triple threat match with all three men hitting their signature moves, but one move REALLY stands out. That was when Lesnar gave The Big Show a RUNNING POWERBOMB ACROSS THE RING!!!! Sure Kevin Nash botched a jack-knife power bomb on Show and sure Show was on the turnbuckle when Lesnar grabbed him and didnt have to be flipped upward, but come on You try running across the ring with Show in your arms!!! INSANE!!

Shawn Michaels vs Bret Htman" Hart for the Intercontinental Title

oh ya, in a ladder match... the first ever ladder match in WWF history.

by far underrated because it was not on a pay-per-view but rather filmed for Superstars (I believe) HBK vs Razor wasn't the first ladder match, as many believe, but then again it was at Wrestlemania.

and while in on the subject of ladder matches, what happened to a guy pushing the ladder when his opponent is almost going to grab the belt, and the guy on the ladder straddles the top rope leaving the easy opening for the one pushing the ladder? thats the classic finish (also the finish to Bret vs Shawn, in the aformentioned match)

also i'd like to pose a question, do you think a diva's ladder match would go over? im talking between established women, suck as trish (if she came back or Lita) or how about Mickie James against Beth Phoenix. maybe toss Gail Kim in the Mix, whenever creative decides its time for her to debut...

Bret Hart vs Mr. Perfect at the 1993 King Of The Ring. It was the rematch of their SummerSlam '91 showdown and this time both wrestlers were faces. They were my two favorite wrestlers then (and still are, by the way). I loved the way these guys worked with each other..unbelievable chemistry. I think because it was the 2nd round of the tournament, the match wasn't given its proper due. It was easily the match of the night and one of the great underrated gems of our time.

I also saw someone posted the Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage at WrestleMania VII. I couldn't agree more. The Warrior got a bad rap for his wrestling skills, but paired against the right opponent could really tell a great story. The career vs career match between the two should have meant everything to these guys, and you could tell it did. Although Warrior dropped the ball a couple months later and left the company for the first time, he was one of the greatest performers of the night on the biggest night of the year. Savage, as always, was brilliant. No one was a better worker than Savage when he was in his prime.

One more, not on the same level, was the WrestleMania VI match between Warrior and Hulk Hogan. I know, two guys who couldn't wrestle their way out of a paper bag..but the match was AWESOME! I was shocked. There was no way to match the build-up of the match, but Warrior and Hogan together wrestled a truly great match. It was more storytelling than actual wrestling, but I was impressed with their showdown considering the limited in-ring skills each possessed.

Rob Van Dam vs Eddie Guerrero on raw 2002 for the ic title in a ladder match that match had everything and isnt really talked about today also the rock vs booker t summerslam 01 for the wcw title that match was really good and had good anticipation the build up was great matter of fact the whole invasion story line was great and was one of the last good things in wrestling another is chris jericho vs kurt angle vs chris benoit wrestlemania 2000 for the ic and european champions that match was a really good one especially cuz the fact it was all there wm debut and they put on a show to bad kurt lost both his titles that night and this match isnt underrated or overlooked but i think goldberg and brock lesnar at wm 20 would have been one of the greatest matches of all time if brock lesnar never stated he was leaving it would of been a way better outcome and match it sucked and i wish that match was great simply cuz of the fact those were to bulls in wrestling at the time and stone cold was the icing on the cake another one is triple h vs the rock in a iron man match not really talked about those are just a few
