Most underrated or overlooked matches?

i think one of the most overlooked matches in history is from unforgiven 2002 when chris benoit faced kurt angle... albeit wwe as completely wiped benoit after the horrific incident but i was just watching it the other day and it was one of the best most technically sound matches i have ever seen

These are some of my favorite matches of all time. These are the first that came to mind. I know that there’s more, but this is all that I can think about right now. Some of these matches do get recognition, but not as much as they should.

Shawn Michaels vs. Shelton Benjamin
Raw 2005
This is one match that does get recognition, but not enough. This was almost a classic match between these two. The Sweet Chin Music to Shelton was ridiculous…

The Undertaker vs. Jeff Hardy (Ladder Match)
Raw 2002
Great match that in my opinion laid the foundation for Jeff Hardy’s major push…even if it took years to actually happen. Close match that many KNEW that Hardy was going to win. I loved how Taker showed his respect for Hardy in the end (despite being the heel). (Taker beat the hell outta Hardy in this one…it was almost funny)

Shawn Michaels vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin
King of the Ring 1997
This was their first high profile match (they occasionally wrestled at house shows). This wasn’t a classic encounter, but it was good. It doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Their Wrestlemania match was not that great…due to Shawn’s back. This match saw two healthy veterans beat the hell outta each other.

Shawn Michaels vs. Jeff Jarrett (Intercontinental Championship)
In Your House 2 (1995)
I was 9 when this PPV aired. This was my favorite match on the card. I still watch it to this day. Jeff Jarrett and HBK had great chemistry and put on a great match. I wish this match got the recognition it deserves. HBK pulls off the victory…Jarrett leaves the WWF…

Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon (Ladder Match)
Summerslam 1995
This was a good match, but not nearly as good as their Wrestlemania 10 Ladder Match.

The Rock vs. Triple H (Iron Man Match)
Judgement Day 2000
Two guys at that time who were capable of this type of match and they delivered. I didn’t particularly care for the amount of falls, truthfully. The return of The Undertaker at the end added a bit of a twist (and confusion) to the match and decision…but this most certainly was a great match between these two.

The Rock vs. Triple H (Intercontinental Championship/Ladder Match)
Summerslam (1998)
These two had so many matches and had unbelievable chemistry with each other. This ladder match was no different. Hard fought match from these two. Both guys deserved a standing ovation afterward…

Shawn Michaels vs. Mankind
Mind Games 1996
Shawn was the WWF Champion and Mankind was new to the scene. A true threat to the championship was Mankind. Mick Foley will say that this was his greatest match ever. I would say that it was one of his best if not his best.

Shawn Michaels vs. Diesel (No Holds Barred Match)
In Your House: Good Friends, Better Enemies 1996
Matches like this weren’t very common. Diesel and Shawn put on a brutal yet memorable match. (How many Kevin Nash matches were great? Not many)

The Rock vs. Eddie Guerrero
Raw 2002
This match was excellent. I remember marking out when Eddie reversed the Rock Bottom. Eddie (the far superior wrestler, lets face it) made Rocky look excellent in this match…although Rock held his own very well.

The Rock vs. Brock Lesnar
Summerslam 2002
I think this match was good and could’ve been better if they were given a little more time. Far from a dream match, but it was definitely something to behold. The atmosphere was electric and you could tell that it was Brock’s time.

Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Savio Vega
(1995-1996)
These two had great chemistry in the ring. Most of their matches were pretty enjoyable…especially the Caribbean Strap Match.

Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin
Survivor Series (1996)
Not as good as their Wrestlemania 13 match. Great match though. I didn’t care for the finish, but it was acceptable.

The Rock vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin
Wrestlemania 19 (2003)
Their third and (likely) final match together. Austin’s last match (as of 2/2009). Wasn’t as good as their other Wrestlemania matches. The Rock was pretty funny throughout this match. It was pretty emotional because you could see (or sense) something. I knew something was up with Austin. He didn’t quite look himself in this match. I loved how those two shared that moment at the end.

Hollywood Hulk Hogan vs. Sting
Starcade 1997
As much as I hated WCW, I anticipated this match. It wasn’t the greatest match…wrestling wise. I think the atmosphere and significance of the match makes it memorable.

Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog (WWF Championship)
In Your House 5 (1995)
Great match. Bret bled A LOT.

WM 19- HBK vs Y2J

This match is mentioned somewhat, but it tends to be overshadowed by the matches vs Hart, Ramon, Cena, Austin and the triple threat at WM 20 when people talk about HBK's legacy. I'm a little impartial because I saw it live, but still, this match is probably my favorite 1-on-1 match of all time. So good.

one match that no one has yet to mention (And rarely does) is the WM 20 encounter between Chris Jericho and Christian! I've watch the dvd of the whole ppv many times over the last few years and truly feel this match fits any and every definition of underrated!

It's just an amazing wrestling match up with both men hitting numerous spots while still maintaining good technical wrestling, Both men probably fit the description of most underappreciated and underrated wrestler better than anyone (all though with his recent run Jericho is finally getting the rec he deserves). not to mention the story leading up to the match was well developed over months and had Trish's heel turn at the end of it!

Great match, great story, if you have not seen it lately please check it out and let me know what you think! (personally I feel this match was the best of the night on a ppv where there were a couple other very good matches, notably the triple threat at the end)

I agree with some of the matches already mentioned. Savage/Warrior is truly one of the greatest matches ever, and I hardly ever see it get the recognition it deserves.

Bret Hart vs. 1-2-3 Kid was an incredible match, probably the best match in Raw history. This match is what I like to call the epitome of a "hidden gem".

The most underrated match I have ever seen is Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog from 1995. It was an outstanding match, that told a great story, playing off of their match from Summerslam a few years prior.

One match that stands out for me is The Rockers vs. The Orient Express from Royal Rumble 1991. This match had some of the most creative spots ever seen in a wrestling match. The action was very good, all the moves were timed well, and there was such a great flow to the match. It had one of the best hot tags you will ever see, when Shawn tagged Marty the crowd erupted. Fuck TLC matches. This is tag team wrestling at it's finest. Here it is:

has everyone forgot chris jerico vs. shawn michaels at wrestlemania....hands down it was great.....but every match with hbk is great it seems....with angle and flair.....and also dont forgot the rock vs. hulk hogan!!! it may not have been the greatest wrestling match but its a moment no one will ever forget!

Terry Funk vs. Jerry The King Lawler in an empty arena match - 1981. i believe this was the 1st ever empty arena match. never gets mentioned anywhere. great match, which showcases both men at their best, especially a psychotic heel terry funk screaming "my eye...my eye" this atch was entertaining and hopefully one day WWE will make mention of it.

As i read this thread and noticed that nobody mentioned this match I had to make my first post. The match I am referring to is the Light Heavyweight Championship match between Dean Malenko and Scotty Too Hotty @ Backlash 2000. People tend to forget Scotty was a decent wrestler because of his weird persona and antics, but he kept up with Malenko pretty well and the top rope DDT delivered to Hotty was an awesome way to end the match.

Chris Benoit/Bret Hart tribute to Owen.....If that was a Wrestlemania main event people would be calling it the best match of all-time.

Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg. If the match had been how people predicted then nobody would remember it. It would have been a perfectly entertaining match, but it wouldn't get the type or reaction it get's now.

The fans turned on them and it created one of the most memorable matches of recent years.

Sting & Lex Luger vs. The Steiner Brothers - Superbrawl '91

For some reason, no one ever seems to talk about this match, but it is one of my favorite matches ever. For all you Meltzer marks, Dave Meltzer rates it a 4 1/2 star match. It's a highly entertaining match, and the crowd was all over it. Oh, and Gary Michael Capetta was the ring announcer. He ruled.

Pretty much anything from Austin in 2001 is underated in my opinion. Everyone remembers his older matches, and rightly so. But his run through '01 was really overshaddowed by the lame alliance storyline, and people forget it was Austin that kept the WWF interesting during this period.

fatal 4 way match between psicosis, rey mysterio, juvi, and blitzkreig in wcw for the crusierweight title that match is overlooked but it is the best match ever, psicosis won by the way, holla.
