Mickie James: Country singer?

Not sure where to put this..
AllAccess.com is reporting that former WWE Womens and Divas Champion Mickie James has signed a deal with Skyline Management Group, based out of Nashville, to pursue a career in country music. James has signed with agents Sherry and James Massaro, who specialize in developing country music talent. Additionally, it's being reported that Mickie James has also signed with Absolute Publicity to handle all of her public relations.

I didn't know Mickie could sing. What are your opinions on this? What wrestlers have tried to make careers into music? We all know Chris Jericho has done it, John Cena too. Anyone else?

This is probably going to be a laughable endeavor at best. Mickie has a sweet accent, and I'm sure she has a decent singing voice if she's getting a deal, but
I don't think anyone would ever take her seriously, and I doubt she can write her own songs.

Writing your own material is a quick way to get over with the people in Nashville, and if she can't, or doesn't, she'll instantly be looked at as an outsider trying to move in, just like all the pop stars that moved in (Jessica Simpson, for example).

I remember reading when she fist joined the WWE that she was studying English literature and creative writing in her spare time. I'm not surprised she's looking at other option, she seems like a smart girl and looks fed up with wrestling.

All things considered, there are far worse careers one might pursue after pro wrestling. Assuming she has a halfway decent voice, she might be able to at least make in-roads as a novelty act.

It wouldn't surprise me, though, to see WWE write this aspect of her real life into storylines somewhere. This could certainly help open doors to bring country music acts into WWE, which fits in beautifully with the kind of cross-promotional efforts/guest host stunt casting so prevalent in WWE. Also, with the amount of TV exposure WWE can offer Mickie, it only stands to boost her new endeavor.

Hell, if they play their cards correctly, it could even allow Mickie to have a nice little debut on the country charts. She certainly has the girl-next-door looks and seems sweet enough to be the kind of person fans of country music might get behind. I'll hold my opinion until I actually hear some music from Mickie.

Ultimately, that's the make-it or break-it factor for any project like this. You can have all the media/marketing in the world, but if the project sounds like crap, you're dead in the water.

Cena and Jericho are both WWE main-eventers who've tried it, but don't forget about Lillian Garcia. I have her album, which is recorded in Spanish of all things. It's not bad, but it's not intended for mass consumption.

One of the first professional wrestlers to try his hand as a musician -- or was he a musician who tried his hand at pro wrestling -- was "Freebird" Michael Hayes. Back in the early '80s, he wrote and recorded the group's entrance music "Badstreet U.S.A." The Freebirds' popularity helped give the song some traction at Southern radio stations, and Hayes would occasionally take short periods of time off from the ring to play gigs throughout the Southern states. It was never a "break-through hit" or anything of that nature.

Another person who parlayed a career in the music industry into success in pro wrestling is "The Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart. He got his show-biz start as a teen, performing with The Gentrys, a "boy band" which recorded the million-selling single "Keep on Dancin'." The group would have probably had greater success if their label, Stax Records, hadn't gone bankrupt.

Later in life, of course, Jimmy became a legendary pro wrestling manager. But at the same time, WWF also utilized Jimmy's musical skills, employing him to write some of the best-known wrestling entrance music of the 1980s. In addition to writing entrance music for talent he managed like The Honky Tonk Man, The Nasty Boys and The Rougeaus, he wrote a piece of music almost any fan over the age of 15 knows: Shawn Michaels' "Sexy Boy" theme!

Another performer it might be easy to forget had a foray into the music industry is Hulk Hogan. I remember early in his career with AWA (in the era just before jumping to WWF), he was profiled in a few music magazines for playing bass guitar in a few bands. At one point, he teamed up with his good buddy Jimmy Hart to put out an album. I'm pretty sure his wife Linda was included in the group as well.

I'm a fan of country music, so I'll have to see how she does. I don't expect anything good, but nothing necessarily bad. I've never heard her sing anything and I don't know if anything exists, so I can't really ave any expectations for this. I don't know really how successful past wrestlers have actually been so I don't know the fail rate she could be joining. This does remind me that out of all the years I've been living here, I've never seen a country music singer in person.

The great thing about this for Mickie is that there is no "fail rate," only an opportunity for success. The only way she might fail is if she completely stopped wrestling to pursue a music career, then turned out unable to support herself doing so. That's not going to happen here. At best, she winds up with a successful side project. At worst, she has a hobby that can't make her any money. Either way, she's going to be OK. And, I'd be willing to bet money, she winds up making a few new fans in the process to boot!

I’m not really that big a fan of country music but I do wish her luck in that genre of the music industry. If she has a decent voice and decent songs she could have moderate success. I don’t think she needs an extravagant voice in order to be successful.

Also, her being a wrestler could help her but it could also hurt her. A ton of people see wrestling as a joke, so I hope she gets a fair chance even though some people might despise wrestling. But it could also help her because in a way she’s pretty well known so people might want to see her. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how she does before judging her.

My guess is that many of the people who listen to country music might also watch pro wrestling, so I don't think it'll hurt Mickie one bit. Hell, if Rena Mero could end up being in a few country music videos without actually singing or anything of the sort, maybe Mickie could have a little cross-over success as well?

I guess it’s possible that a lot of people that listen to country music might also like to watch pro-wrestling so it wouldn’t really hurt her that much or it wouldn’t hurt her at all if that were the case. But if it isn’t the case then it’s possible that it will hurt her. But I kind of doubt that, like I said, if she is a decent country music singer then she’ll probably be successful since there’s bound to be some people that will like her.

If no one likes her and she does terrible, then now she knows that country music isn’t her thing and that she shouldn’t invest a lot into it. She should keep singing a hobby and not try to turn it into a career if things don’t go right for her. Anyways, she might just be doing this to see how everything goes and from there she’ll determine how her future in the music industry will go.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see her have success if she’s decent enough. She probably won’t be as big as Taylor Swift or Carrie Underwood, but it never hurts to give it a shot, right?

If Mickie can actually sing then that's a huge plus. I think she'll sell a few albums at least just because people are gonna see it's Mickie James, professional wrestler. They're gonna be interested just because of that reason. That's what happened with Fozzy, people heard that this lead singer was a rockstar and a pro wrestler, and it got people talking. Hey, it could work with ol' Mickie.

Dude, do you realize how high you're setting the bar even dropping those two names? Taylor Swift has sold more CDs this year than any other living musician. I say that because Michael Jackson, since he died, has sold more CDs in 2009 than anyone else. But as the living go, Taylor weighs in at #1.

And Carrie Underwood is the country music industry's #1 female artist for the last two years. Mickie would be lucky to get as far as another former American Idol competitor in the country music business: Kellie Pickler.

Mickie James is not going to last very long if she keeps working with the WWE and being the one to be consistently be featured, held to a standard some male wrestlers dream of and has to be in control of every single match... she is going to be worn out and will be retiring or quitting professional wrestling earlier than expected. Who else in the E does she have that she could have a feud with? Natayla, Michelle and possibly Gail Kim. Other than that, she has nothing but drawing value to keep her going. So, she needs to have an escape route so to speak outside of professional wrestling.

Since she is a country bumpkin, looks like she has chosen the way of learning the art of country music. I have no comment on her singing, writing ability or anything to do with music... but if she good enough skills to perform decent sets onstage and impress audiences, then having a country singing career will be good for her to make an income, be featured on mainstream media (or some sort of media) and have her legacy carry on. If she can wrestle matches as the "one in-charge" and possibly script the matches, she wouldn't have any problems in writing. She wouldn't be as green as some other performers considering she is used to the big stage. Its the voice that will be the deciding factor.

However, the smart thing for Mickie James if her country singing career is to take off and become successful is to quit the WWE and sign a contract with TNA. This may sound asinine, but TNA will be encouraging Mickie to get herself out there and make a name for herself in the musical scene without being pressured to turn up to weekly tapings and PPV's if her country dates take up the majority of the time. Plus, her wrestling career will extend as she would not have to work as many dates and the matches between her and some of the other female wrestlers (the best the Northern American circuit as to offer) could be great for TNA and the knockout's division.

I encourage Mickie to start a country singing career and best of luck to her. However, I don't think I am ready to say goodbye to Mickie as a professional wrestler yet.
