Michael Owen signs two year deal with United

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's official website: "Michael is a world class forward with a proven goalscoring record at the highest level and that has never been in question.

"Coming to Manchester United with the expectations that we have is something that Michael will relish."

Owen said: "I had just begun to talk to other clubs when out of the blue Sir Alex phoned me on Wednesday afternoon, invited me to have breakfast with him the next morning during which he told me that he wanted to sign me. I agreed without a moment's thought.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I intend to seize it with both hands.

"I am now looking forward to being a Manchester United player and I am fortunate that I already know so many of the players here. I missed pre-season last year and am pleased that I will be starting at Carrington from day one.

"I want to thank Sir Alex for the faith he has shown in me and I give him my assurance that I will repay him with my goals and performances"

So, Owen has signed for Man Utd. In my opinion, it's a good move. He's a proven goalscorer and if he can keep fit, then he can get 10 - 15 goals next season. It's a free transfer, so it's not a MAJOR risk. It gives him the chance to get back into the England squad, if he performs.

Opinions?

Good fucking riddance. A man with no integrity, who doesn't want anything to do with us, he can go to Man U, be injured and enjoy life.

Have fun Michael.

Why did he have no integrity? He left for a club that are champions of England. Although he had a highly documented goalless streak, His goals per game average was 30 goals in 62 games. As Fergie said, He's a proven goalscorer, And with the quality of Manchester United he will bag a hatfull.

If he gets fit, he scores goals given the chances and at United he will get chances. If he's as shit as he was for Newcastle then it was a free transfer so United don't lose out. It's not a major signing as of yet but it could turn out that way. If he scores lots of goals he gets back in the England team. That's good enough incentive for him.

He signed a four year contract, spent a year off injured. Anyone with integrity would say, you know what I'll extend my contract for a year, he refused to be sold in January, in turn costin Newcastle about £16 million, he refused to take a wage cut when injured and was the least motivated person I have ever seen on a pitch.

So yeah that's integrity.

Also how can a guy who has not scored a goal in 7 months be a 'proven goalscorer?'

The guy is pathetic; he doesn't deserve anything more than a pay as you play because for a guy who cost Newcastle in the region of £40 mil (a figure I read from BBC in wages and fees I think) has a lot of deliver if Utd fans will accept him.

But they won't and rightly so. Hopefully he will be exposed. Utd are still weaker and this doesn't make them stronger in any way.

They are at about each others' level. I can't wait to see this backfire because I am certain that it will.

You know, I am actually kinda happy to see this move, as a fan of Michael Owen, I still remember him tearing Argentina to bits in 1998, it's sad that he's gone the way he has.

The thing about him is, when he aint fucking injured like he is most of the time these days it seems he can play well, really well, better than any other English striker except Rooney obviously. If he can keep fit, stay healthy and start scoring goals for a top tier team then maybe we could see the old Michael Owen again. He's the kind of guy England want in their team backing up Rooney.

I think it's a "meh" move, he'll be a rarely used sub IMO, because Fergie will know the value of letting his younger players get a game when Rooney/Berbatov can't play. If by some miracle Owen resurrects his career, however, and forms a partnership with Rooney, England can only benefit.

Biggest fucking mercenary in the history of English football. He left Liverpool, the club that made him because he wanted to win the European cup, despite having won about 5 trophies there. They then won the Champions League the year they sold him, while he sat next to Leeds rejects on the bench, then he literally begged to be sold to Liverpool, who wouldn't pay for him so he goes to Newcastle, and totally disrespects them by publically asking only to go on loan.

Next thing, he goes there, spends about half the time injured, and when he does play, puts the amount of effort usually reserved for testimonials. Then, Hull ofer him guaranteed week in week out football, and he chooses to go to United where hell warm the bench, but at least he'll be on 100 grand a week.

He's been totally disrespectful to Liverpool, Newcastle and Hull fans, and if United think for a minute that he won't jump ship as soon as City offer him 1p a week more than they do, they're in for a suprise. Also, he's from down the road to me, and everyone who's ever met him says he's a massive bellend, my brother included.

I hope he snaps his ligaments, and spends the rest of his life pissing his money away in the bookies.

Win-win scenario really. If he does good at scum and scores goals he gets back in the England squad where he has an awesome record and is a striker that England desperatly need. If he fails at scum its good news because scum do crap and everybodys happy apart from the Prawn Sandwich eaters.

Personally I hope he does well, he deserves another chance with England because he is better than Emile Heskey and Peter Crouch.I don't know what he is like off the pitch apart from he rides horses (yay!!) and have to question how he can join scum when he came through the Liverpool youths. Its basically a big fuck you to Liverpool fans and I know how that feels as I felt it when Harry Kewell joined Galatasary.

No integrity? He has lots, but it's hard to be motivated at Newcastle where they get no-where in the cups, and are at the bottom end of the table. He didn't want anything to do with Newcastle. He wanted to go to Liverpool from Real Madrid. He wanted any club besides Newcastle, but alas, only Newcastle would pay a stupid amount for him.

He'll come to United. He may get injured, but he may not. He'll enjoy winning trophies for a change, and actually playing with world class players.

Because he didn't do that at Madrid? hell even Newcastle had some pretty good players there players like Viduka and Martins,Gutierez,Shay Given etc.Newcastle have only been at the wrong end of the table for a few years and Owen as a professional should have put his all into the club. At Man Utd he will get in the squad if fit because lets face it he is much better than that lazy sack of shit that is Berbatov. I'd be worried though If I was Owen because I would have to think that if I couldn't get in to the starting line up ahead of lazbatov I must be pretty fuckin' bad.

No integrity? He has lots,

He's just joined Man Utd even though the chances of him playing an integral part are slim!

but it's hard to be motivated at Newcastle where they get no-where in the cups,

It's not like they were winning cups before he joined them. He knew the score.

and are at the bottom end of the table.

Staying up should motivate just as much as winning.

He didn't want anything to do with Newcastle.

Then he shouldn't have gone.

He wanted to go to Liverpool from Real Madrid.

Shouldn't have left then, should he.

He wanted any club besides Newcastle,

Dagenham And Redbridge?

but alas, only Newcastle would pay a stupid amount for him.

It wasn't a stupid ammount at the time.

He'll come to United. He may get injured, but he may not. He'll enjoy winning trophies for a change, and actually playing with world class players.

Ifs, buts, maybes.

I couldn't have put it better than Jake has, although il have to disagree and say Newcastle did offer him a stupid amount of money and that was the only reason he came to the toon.

Overall in fees and wages Owen cost Newcastle £41 Million, for that he scored 30 goals in 79 appearances for the Magpies, thats round about £1.1 Million per goal. That includes a single goal in 14 appearences in 2009. If Owen was such a natural goalscorer and played with integrity Newcastle could still be in the premiership but like most of the team he couldn't give a stuff and was happy just to keep picking up his paycheck.

Good riddance to the little mercenary

and he chooses to go to United where hell warm the bench, but at least he'll be on 100 grand a week.

As i understand it he'll be on £20,000 a week with a shit load of performance based bonuses which i have to admit is genius on the part of Alex ferguson

Treacherous moneygrabbing little fucker. I could have accepted him going to any other club but not Man Ure. He'll fit right in there amongst all the other arrogant, soulless mercenaries.

Treacherous moneygrabbing little fucker.
Oh yeah, joining a team where he takes a pay cut and is on a pay as you play deal? Such a moneygrabber. Actually he shows ambition. He wants to play at the World Cup and how can he best prove he is ready to take on the world? In the Championship with Newcastle? In the Premier League with Hull? Or in the Champions League with Man United?

He'll fit right in there amongst all the other arrogant, soulless mercenaries.
For fucks sake, you're allowed to hate your rivals, trust me I hate Hartlepool with a passion, but soulless mercenaries? How do you get that? The United team I see is full of young, ambitious players and wily veterans who can still play at the highest level. How is joining a big team a bad thing?

As for the transfer itself, apparantly he has scored two in two games in Asia. That means fuck all of course, pre-season games mean nothing but getting fitness, but he is showing if he gets a chance he will take it which is a good sign for England. He gets good again and chances of making the quarter-finals and losing on penalties are higher.

Are you seriously trying to compare Viduka, Martins and the rest to Rooney, Carrick, Scholes & Berbatov? The mere thought is laughable. Seriously. Shay Given is the only good player out of that bunch, I'll give you that one. But it doesn't compare to him playing with United's squad. Not at all. The United squad is light years ahead of Newcastle's talent wise, and it's not even up for debate.

Oh yeh Owen's a hero because he has scored twice in pre season. News flash, pre season means sweet fuck all...Shola Ameobi's scored three times means nothing.

You can't say Owen didn't get the balls at Newcastle, I saw him miss many a sitter, many many. He just can't be arsed, good riddance to him I say. it says something when your centre back scores more goals than your multi million pound striker.

I don't see Owen as treacherous and money-grabbing at all. To the person who said that, where would you rather be? The Championship or at the top of the Premiership? It would take someone pretty stupid to stay at a shambolic club like Newcastle instead of moving to one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Yeah, scoring in pre-season means barely anything. But it shows his accuracy is still there. His first goal was perfectly into the corner.

Owen got the balls, but were they of the quality that he's going to be getting at Old Trafford? I seriously doubt it. Out of any of your players last season, who COULD be arsed?

Steven Gerrard reckons Owen's the best player he's ever played with, but I'm calling bollocks. Owen's scoring record does speak for itself, but it was his pace that set him apart, not his finishing.

For all the talk of how good a goalscorer he is, people need to remember he's never scored 20 in a season anywhere, and it's not as if the Liverpool side he was in was poor on the midfield side of things. Fowler was scoring 25+. So, yeah, United should have signed Fowler if they wanted a Liverpool has been. Before I get a mongoloid response, note the tone of that sentence.

I didn't say he was a hero for scoring. I pointed out he had scored so it shows he is sharp and is finding his way back to scoring goals. Yep, Ameobi is scoring too and whilst it doesn't mean he will in the league it shows he is sharp and ready for the season ahead. I have witnessed Ameobi in pre-season. It was a shit defence he was up against but he looked dangerous, had good control and a great eye for goal which is a good sign.

Towards the end of the season he definitely did but he wasn't fully fit at that point. If he gets fit he will score goals, he has done it everywhere he's played. Even at Newcastle he scored more than 30 goals in 80 games.
