^^^^Well that is the route most expected Benjamin to follow, but the problem is, you can develope in ring skills, but you cant create charisma, you even have it or you dont. Its not hard to teach a guy how to be a decent wrestler, but if the guy has no charisma, he never is going to have charisma, which means he will never be good on the mic. Guys like Hogan and Austin weren't very good in the ring, but they were great on the mic and they are two of the most popular stars in WWE history.

Actually Austin is really good in the ring. He is a good technical wrestler I learned that watching Match of the Week.

Firstly, people seem to be confusing amateur wrestling with "in ring skills."
Let me be the first to point out that these two attributes are completley different. People say the Rock got over because of his mic work not his ring work which was "average or mediocre" this is partly true in the mic aspect. However, just because he didnt have amateur wrestling credentials (something which he would have excelled at. He beat the best guy on the wrestling team with ease with a belly to belly) doesnt mean he doesnt have in ring skills. The reasons he had so many classic matches is because he had exactly that, wrestling skills. Shelton performs just like the other good wrestlers in the WWE, how often does he mat wrestle, how often does Kennedy so leaping spinning back kicks using his martial arts skills. This isn't MMA people. In ring skills are as follows: ability to sell, stamina\fitness, overall strength (ability to successfully slam opponent. You dont have to be a powerhouse just stronger than your average man.) ability to strike, ability to remember spots and execute them properly without being dangerous, ability to get over with the crowd using either taunts or momentum heel\face moves.

These are in ring skills, not necessarily NCAA or former College wrestler, but Pro wrestling skills. You want to see those types of skills, listen to JR talk about Triple H excellent wreslting, he is referring to his skills, which have nothing to do witch amateur wrestling but his knowledge, the same goes for Orton, excellecnt wrester, polished in ring to the bone, works like a vet already, same for taker, michaels, and yes John Cena. This is Pro Wrestling ladies and gentleman NOT MMA.

what happened to the days when you didnt need to talk on the mic to be a star i remember dean malenko gettin in the ring and doin his thing... he never really said anything, but i guess that fit his character. but i think that if youre good enough in the ring then it doesnt matter how good your mic skills are thats what the likes of james mitchell and......damn there really arent any managersin wrestling anymore... that sucks... but develop ability first then mic skills second because no one is gonna care what you say if you cant get it on in the ring

Malenko was good...probably one of the best in-ring technical wrestlers around...but he wasn't ever top of the ladder. he was good in the ring, but his lack of charisma held him back. same with the likes of lance storm and benoit.

though as you said, before you had managers as the mouthpiece, either of characters who weren't good on the mic, or whose gimmick led them to need one (yokozuma, kamalah and umaga) who were able to be the charisma. and since estrada left umaga, he doesn't seem as intimidating as he was with estrada. I think it was a bad move and the likes of vicky guerrero should take ECW and bring back armando estrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaada

Honestly, in today's business larger company's, specifically the WWE, value good mic skills over good in ring ability. From a business standpoint, it's necessary to draw in the casual fan.
Personally, I am much more drawn to actual wrestling ability. In my opinion, mic skills are a bonus. Obviously, it's best when a wrestler possesses both attributes equally- but that combination of great mic skills and great wrestling ability is pretty rare.

Mic skills all the way. The list of guys who were athletically gifted performers who never reached a high level of popularity is painfully long. So is the list of mediocre in ring performers who cut great promos. Remember, it's the promos that sell a match and make you want to watch. No interviews to establish the rivalry, the connection, the intensity between the wrestlers then nobody will want to watch. Remember Van Hammer vs Brett Hart in 1998 - probably not because there was no rivalry between them, Hammer was never a top WCW attraction, and there were no significant promos before or after the match. However, for nearly 45 minutes on Monday Nitro they had one the best televised matches of that year on any wrestling show. Unfortunately, ppl tuned out in droves because there was reason to watch.

Look at today's top stars, the ones that drive ratings and PPV. Cena, HHH, Undertaker, Edge, Randy Orton - the type and quality of their matches vary wildly but each one is very effective on the microphone.

If you don't have ability...you better darn sure have mic skills. Mic skills, from a shear entertainment standpoint, can make up for lack of ability but the other does not hold true. If you don't have mic skills you don't attract fans and thus will never win championships. Unfortuneately the standard for both has dipped dramatically over the past few years as evidenced by Cena who sucks both on the mic and the ring having been champ for so long prior to Orton.

Im not trying to stand up for Cena but how does he suck on the mic?

have you ever considered why cena's been champ for a year??? is it because he has mastered chain wrestling? is it because he can fly around the ring? or is it maybe because the guy is so good on the mic, he has crowds firmly behind him?

Cena cuts promos that can make you cheer and while you are cheering, he turns around and says something so damn clever you boo him as a heel. he has crowds where he wants them as a face.

don't be stupid. where's sly to address this issue?

mic skills look at cena and hogan neither can wrestle themselves outta paper bad but still both were hughly successful
