Megatron Answers Sports Questions

Copying the ideas from the Wrestling Spam Zone, this is the thread where you can ask me questions about the past/present/future of sports. I mainly stick to MLB/NFL/NBA/NCAA, so I can't give you guys promises on the other sports.

So yeah, shoot away.

I don't think so. Dwight seems hellbent on playing for the Nets. The Mavs don't have a lot of pieces to trade to the Magic like the Nets would (Lopez, Brooks, etc.) and if I'm Deron I'm staying in Brooklyn banking on the fact that a top 5 player wants to be here and will be here within the next year or so (since he will be a FA after this season if he's not traded).

To put odds on it, I'd give maybe 20% you'll see Deron there and 2-3% Dwights there. Just makes too much sense for them both to play for the Russian.

This sounds like a copout, but a little bit of luck. Neither of the past 2 champions I would say were the best teams that year - sure they were good and proved their mettle in the playoffs, but anyone can get hot for a 20 game stretch.

As for what they can do right now to improve, simply, get healthy. Sabathia is on the DL right now (although he'll be back shortly after his 15 day stint is up) and Pettitte will be out longer, so their SP will be lacking some depth for a few weeks. Right now they have to worry about winning the division and staying out of the 1 game playoff. You don't want to risk your season on 1 game. Then it just comes down to some luck and some hot play. They got that in 09 but not as much in past seasons.

EDIT: Romo I think gets a bum rep simply because of the logo on his helmet. He's a boarderline top 10 QB and when he's on he's a fringe top 5. He certainly has failed sometimes, but every single QB has failed at least a few times, even the best ones. The Cowboys have some great weapons around him offensively and with Claiborne and Brandon Carr added to the secondary their defense should improve yet again. He's capable of leading this team deep into the playoffs, I'd say.

Very likely, since the record holder is Dickerson with 2105, only 102 more than OJ. Even if OJ only matched his lowest seasonal total in each of those 2 games (which was 55) he would've ended up with 8 more yards.

Micheal Jordan is still considered the King of Basketball, but do you ever see someone ever surpassing him in every level?

I don't think you can ever say never. For all we know there's some 2 year old out there with all of the genetics that will be dominating the NBA 20 years from now.

From the current crop of stars, the obvious comparison/challenger is LeBron. If you want to go by accolades he has a bit of a ways to go, but he's only 27 (which was a year before MJ won his first one) and is seriously the most physically talented player playing in the NBA. The one concern I'd have for him is that his banging style of play could wear him down a bit sooner than say a jump shooter would. He's been pretty fortunate with his health so far, but long playoff runs + Olympic play take a toll on your body. Frankly if I were him I wouldn't play in any Olympic past this one (since he'll be past 30 and already have a few gold medals) and conserve my energy for the playoffs. Should Lebron get up to 5 or 6 rings I think it could be heavily discussed that he's > Jordan. Maybe it wouldn't be accepted but MJ > all wouldn't be thought as the undeniable fact that it is now.

If the NFL season were to begin next week, who would be your Superbowl favorite? And which team would you put at taking the first pick in the draft?

Why did the Lions waste a special talent in Andre Ware?

Ware benefited a bit from the Run and Shoot offense that was applied at Houston. Gave him inflated numbers and winning college awards doesn't always = pro success. It's clear the Lions weren't the only ones that didn't think much of him after he left them because the only other 2 pro teams he was on he didn't make it past the practice squad

Really difficult to predict something as big of a crapshoot as the NFL, but if I had to predict a Super Bowl on July 1 it'd be:

NFC: Philadelphia. I think the Packers will end up with the best record in the NFC, but we know the team with the best record rarely wins it all. Philly came on strong last year after starting out 4-8, and even though I don't like having their defensive coordinator be an ex O-lineman, they vastly improved in that 4 game stretch. Their big game stretch comes between weeks 2-10. If they can break .500 or even go 5-3, they'll be playoff bound. Then from there who knows.
AFC: Baltimore. The trendy pick in the AFC recently, you have to figure with all the postseason wins that Flacco keeps getting that eventually he'll win a conference championship. Suggs being out for most of the year will hurt, but they'll still boast a top ranked defense. The Chargers are another threat I can see coming out from that division, even with Norv Turner still being the coach. Too talented to not make the postseason this many years in a row.

I'd take Philly over Baltimore then. However, by the time the season rolls around don't be surprised if I change my pick. Nothing's official yet :)suspic:)

As for the #1 pick, I could see it coming down to the Jags and Raiders, with the Browns a close third. I know the Jags don't wanna give up on Gabbert after only 2 years, but if he doesn't show great improvements then they'll be going hard after Matt Barkley (the consensus #1 pick). Oakland is somewhat starting over with a new regime, so tanking/losing for #1 pick isn't the worst idea. Carson Palmer likely won't be the starter on their next playoff team, and bringing in the local kid could bring some added exposure.

So far in the offseason, The Detroit Lions have had some trouble staying out of the negative light of the media, with the arrests of Johnny Culbreath, Nick Fairly(twice), Mikel Leshoure and Aaron Berry and the fight between Titus Young and Louis Delmas. With all of these issues pretty much taking center stage, Cliff Avril has had his own issues with the Lions this offseason, being very vocal about not wanting to be under the fantasy tag and wants a long term contract, to which he and the Lions have been going back and forth, to the point of Avril skipping both voluntary and "mandatory" minicamps and workouts.

I'm rambling a bit now, sorry. I'll finally get to the point: Do you feel it to be better for the Lions to "give in" to Avril's demands as it were for a long term deal, or to play it cool and let the dominoes fall as they may?

In the offseason, we had a little debate over what the AL Central would look like this year. I think the final arguments we both presented were that I felt the Tigers would not be nearly as dominant as most expected, while you expected a fairly comfortable repeat. My question is, does it hurt to know just how wrong you were? ;)

I kid, of course. My real question is who do you think will win the division now. I assume still the Tigers, but I'm interested nonetheless.

I'd rather they play hard with Avril and not give him the long term deal and money he's expecting. While he had a breakout year last year and had a good season the year before, the main reason he's getting so much pressure is because of the attention that Suh gets in the middle. Suh get's double teamed which allows Avril to go 1 on 1 with his guy. Sure it takes skill to beat that guy, but I don't think the Lions are too worried and trust their system and development should Avril bolt after this year. If they're able to sign him a bit cheaper than he wants, by all means go for it. But the double digit millions a year he's looking for pushes it for me.

If you could rank the top 10 Centers in the history of basketball, who would they be?

1. Wilt
2. Kareem
3. Russell
4. Shaq
5. Olajuwon
6. Robinson
7. Mikan
8. Malone
9. Ewing
10. Lanier

Very rough list after the top 5. My basketball history is a bit shoddy, but there you go.

I'll have you know sir at this time last year the Tigers weren't in first place either. There's a lot of time left

As for the division, yeah, despite their struggles, I still have the Tigers taking the division. I'd say it's almost guaranteed Dombrowski makes more than 1 move at the deadline to improve our corner OF and DH spots (which is frustrating that they are the positions where we're getting some of our worse production). No disrespect, but as I said last time we talked, I don't really see the Indians as a threat. Ubaldo and Masterson have pitched better as of late, but their overachieving run differential would worry me.

Certain Tigers have produced on offense, but only 1 I'd say has met or passed expectations. That's Jackson (well Berry as well but I don't think anyone was accounting anything from him). Even Cabrera and Fielder, who've had fine seasons, are producing below their career norms. Fielder especially. While that somewhat has to deal with him switching leagues, he's on pace to have his lowest BB rate, wRC+, and wOBA since his 1st full season. Cabrera has been slightly better, but his production has dipped a bit as well from his past 2 years, in part I'd assume because of the position switch. Still, they've done their part for the most part. Guys like Delmon Young, Brennan Boesch, Don Kelly, Ramon Santiago, and Ryan Raburn aren't even replacement worthy at this point. That's why an upgrade - any upgrade - would seem to be a plus at this point. My vote is for Carlos Quentin.

I got two questions, actually...

1. Will the Pittsburgh Pirates remain competitive all season?

2. Why doesn't ESPN realize that Tim Tebow sucks?

Define competitive. Over .500? I'd say they have a very strong chance. Division winner? Eh, it's tough to see them win 90 games (which is what it'd likely take) but should they make a few nice deadline additions for some bats - even if that means adding on some salary - they have an outside chance. I do like their pitching and James McDonald should've been in the All-Star game, or at least in the final vote. Guy has been my best fantasy pitcher all year :suspic:

2. Why doesn't ESPN realize that Tim Tebow sucks?

This sounds more like a rhetorical question, but oh well --

He's one of the most polarizing athletes in sports. Love him or hate him, everyone has an opinion on the guy. Same with LeBron. I personally like the guy, but I can understand others frustrations. He does get covered too much - especially since he's only a backup QB now.

Thoughts on Kyire Irving?

Lived up to his billing as the one star in a weak draft. He's really what Cleveland needed after LeBron left and I see him being a potential multiple time All-Star in a few years. The guys got it.

Will T.O ever be in the NFL again? I say no.

Unlikely. 38, came off an ACL injury, don't know if he can still go. Last time we saw him in Cincy he could, but I don't think any team will wanna take that gamble with his character, even if I think WR needy teams could take the risk and cut him the first time he acts out of line.

Why would the Nets trade for Dwight Howard? They know they would be able to sign him next year without giving up anything. But why would the Nets give anything up for Howard?

The Magic should have traded Howard before he got Stan van Gundy fired, but at least Otis Smith got fired as a result of this. I would personally love to see him get traded to the most irrelevant team possible just to spite him.

Would you take the chance on Owens?

Great thread BTW

As a camp invite yeah. He'd have to actually be capable of making the team and being a #4 receiver or something, though, because he doesn't play special teams so his worth goes down more. But if I were I team I'd say why not, we know this guy is talented and desperate to get another chance. If he fucks up and causes a stir no reason you can't cut his ass.

Well it is Billy King here. He did trade a lottery pick for an expiring Gerald Wallace and then was forced to resign him/overpay for him so the trade didn't look like a complete waste.

The only logical explanation I can have is that the Russian doesn't wanna spend his money on a shitty basketball team and wants to win now, plus there's a lot of room to be the top challengers to the Heat with Rose out, the C's getting old, and the Pacers losing Hibbert. Plus you don't want to risk him going to somewhere like LA or Houston and let them woo Dwight for a whole season. While he's said he only wants to play for Brooklyn, this guy has changed his mind on this before.

I'd guess the Rockets after they signed him to a 4 year 40 million dollar offer sheet. While the Knicks could match it I don't think they want to strap their cap down to 4 guys (Lin, Melo, Amare, Chandler).
