Return of a Pilgrim.
The meeting was hard. The journey was rough. The fight was epic. Anoki is as happy as he has ever been.
Last week he stole a fake goodbye, and for now at least, she rests no longer on his mind.
At last he focuses on the task at hand. Tonight he fights again. The fickle fiend of chance says that this will be his strongest challenge yet, but challenge is a word known well.
They say his opponent is a man of shadow. Well Anoki knows shadow well. Shadows are why he is here, and whilst a lifetime may be spent running from his own, another man's darkness will never again strike fear into his heart. Sooner or later we are all flesh and blood, and whilst escaping ones owe darkness may require one to bleed to death, the darkness of another wayward soul can be more easily removed.
Darkness in front and behind. For now at least, Anoki is the light.
Before Meltdown 25 - Backstage
For once he wants to talk. He has fasted on words these past dozen moons, faint whispers with the ladies of light and darkness, spoken silence with the old man who seems to detest him so. Little is spoken by those with nothing to say, but now at last he feels he has a tale worth telling, and there is only one person he could tell it to.
In weeks gone by he has hung around, skulking in the shadows praying for a chance encounter, tonight he seeks her out.
Knock. Knock.
She has been his inspiration and motivation. When he fell back into the pit she was there to pull him out. Last week he had to say goodbye. Tonight he has to thank her.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
The door opens. As in his mind, Rebecca Sera is there; cell phone in hand, headphones around neck, snatching a moments peace before the show.
Serra: Chief? Well this is an unexpected surprise. What brings you to my little corner of the building?
Anoki stands stiffly.
Anoki: I just thought
if youre not busy, I could have a quick word?
Rebecca smiles. She waves the cell phone.
Serra: Not busy at all Chief. Normally people just text a time and place and tell me to show up.
Anoki surveys the device in mild embarrassment. He watched them appear during his lifetime, but he wouldnt know how to use one if he tried. The outside world flies by quickly on the edge of a black hole.
Serra smiles again.
Serra: Dont worry. Manners are nice. Come in.
Anoki blinks. An unexpected invitation to an unexpected location. He never imagined how Serras room would be; but he would have expected something
more. A moth eaten pink sofa, a patio chair and table and a pile a cardboard boxes.
Serra: Im afraid youre not seeing it at its best tonight. Apparently a new girls being brought in because Leon
well
you know
so Ive got to squash up a little. Apparently Johns already put in an order for a new four seat deluxe reclining sofa for the guys room
although I think he might be in for a shock when he asks the boys in the truck to ship it between shows. Anyway, have a seat.
Rebecca drops to the sofa. Anoki tentatively takes the garden chair. She talks so freely, he struggles to snatch any words to say.
Serra: So whats on your mind Chief?
Anoki: I guess
I just wanted to say thank you for the other week. You know
I was sitting with a towel on my head for a few days.
He blushes faintly, fully aware of how ridicules this must sound. Becky doesnt laugh or smile at it though.
Anoki: What you said, it really helped me. Ive been able to get a lot of stuff off of my chest these past two weeks.
Serra: That was why you vanished after Meltdown? You know John was crowing to anybody wholl listen that you wouldnt be coming back.
Anoki: What did you think?
Serra: I saw you leaving the ring after Michaels. Anybody with an expression like that comes back.
Ankoi: Well you were right. I went to my old home. There were a couple of shadows there I had to face.
Serra does not reply. She knows with how many locks and chains Anoki guards his past. She keeps silent, handing him every opportunity to change the subject. He does not. Perhaps he is finally ready to talk about it. She tentatively reaches;
Serra: Last week you looked like youd traveled a long way
She trails off. Afraid to probe further. She has seen the young man in front of her face down face down a host of foes in the ring. He has survived the rumblings of discontentment, and the lashing tongues that plague the business. In the months hes been here she doesnt think anybody has fazed him
but this thing is his past clearly terrifies him so much, she is almost scared to find out what it is.
Anoki: Yes.
He pauses. Is this it? Time to bring the daemons out the play, to scare the one woman who has ever been kind to him away. To flaunt his darkness for the world to see
sooner or later, we are all flesh and blood.
Anoki: Yes. I walked back to Carso
Nobody knocks this time. But the door flies open. A new face enters the fray. Stacey Madison strides confidently into the room. Her neck flicks, cat like, taking in her surroundings before settling in on Rebecca.
Stacey: No. No. No. This will not do at all. I dont know if this is your idea of interior decorating love, but if Im to be stuck sharing a dressing room with someone then it had better be a damn sight more comfortable that his.
She turns to look through Anoki.
Stacey: Is that patio furniture!?
Serra: So youre Leons replacement then?
Stacey isnt listening, instead poking at the pile of cardboard boxes.
Stacey: Sorry love, what was that? Im going to need these shifting out the way. My wardrobe is coming along behind. So you actually live in this pit then?
Serra: Its only for a week at a time.
Stacey: Eaugh! Well travelling from sty to sty might work for you dear, but now Im here something will have to be done about this. You can make a start my removing the adolescent male from the womans dressing room
Rebecca frowns.
Serra: This is Anoki Akechetta. You know, one of the wrestlers. They tend to hang around the place from time to time.
Stacey at last turns to take Anoki in. She does not appear impressed.
Stacey: An-oh-key
thats a name where you come from is it?
Anoki: Johnny Klamor calls me Boy Wonder if youd prefer that.
In the background Becky covers her mouth the stifle a laugh. Stacey frowns.
Stacey: The Boy Wonder? Well then Ill be The Girl Wonder-ing why youre still in my dressing room. Out.
Rebecca rolls her eyes. Showing him to the door she whispers under her breath.
Serra: Sorry about this Chief. Ill catch up with you after the show. I think Ive got the deal with the new girl for a little bit.
She smiles wryly. In the background, Stacey is staring fixedly at Rebeccas stuff, waiting for it to move. Anoki nods his head. Turns to leave.
Serra: Good luck tonight.
Anoki: Likewise.
They part.
Shadows disciple has returned from the dark.
In the light once more he stands.
Cast around the vacant halls.
Darkness shrinks within his wake.
Pilgrimage.
