MayhemFest 2009

NSL

Life's A Bitch, And Then You Mosh
Marilyn Manson, Slayer, Buller For My Valentine, and a surprise headliner yet to be announced, are set to headline the 2nd annual MayhemFest.

The second and third stages will feature bands like Trivium, Cannibal Corpse, All That Remains, God Forbid, Job For A Cowboy, Behemoth, Black Dahlia Murder, and Whitechapel, as well as a handful of other bands, that are also yet to be named.

Are you going to your local MayhemFest? Did you go last year?

I'll be going to the show on July 29th, and I'll be rocking out to a load of my favorite bands. All That Remains is amazing live, and is the reaosn I'm going, but there's a slew of bands on this tour that I haven't seen yet. Bullet For My Valentine puts on a killer show, and I'm looking forward to seeing it again. Marilyn Manson is the real draw for me. I've never seen him, and it would definitely be a treat. I went to last year's tour, and it was one of the 5 best shows I've ever been to...

EDIT (to drive discussion): Who would you like to see be added as the "surprise" Main Stage band, and "surprise" second stage band?

For the "surprise" bands, I'd love to see Mudvayne take the main stage. They're touring right now with Nonpoint and In This Moment, and since it ends in early March, I can't help but think that it's just a warm-up for a huge summer tour, such as MayhemFest or OzzFest. As much as I love OzzFest, I feel it'll be hard for them to pull in too many main stage caliber bands after the stunt they pulled last year, and MayhemFest quickly sky-rocketed in popularity.

For the second stage, I'm going to add in Otep. They're a hugely popular band among the metal crowd, but they don't have near the national drawing power as Marilyn Manson or Bullet For My Valentine, so headlining a second stage would be perfect for them. They'd cap off an already solid opening line-up, and would be a perfect set-up for the "mayhem" (pun intended), that is the main stage.

This sounds like a badass fest this year! As for the question, did I attend last year? I answer you with another question. What kind of a metal fan would I be if I didn't? I went to the one in Indy, and rocked my face off.

Also, for the surprise headliner, I've got two bands in mind. One, and only because they're my favorite band, is Kittie. I've seen them live twice, and they only get better. The second is Mayhem! Why not make the fest live up to it's name? They are awesome live, are currently recording a new album, and finally found somebody to take Necro's place.

Kittie is amazing live, and would be a great band to put on either stage, but I don't know if they're capable of touring right now. I know Trish Doan was playing bass, but she has since left the band, and they don't have a permanent replacement.

I've heard Killswitch Engage is rumored to be the other main stage band, and that would be beyond incredible. I've never seen them, but love everything they put out, and just know they would put on a killer show. I'm guessing the announcement will be made whenever the website is updated, so until then, nothing is confirmed.

I wouldn't mind seeing Killswitch, either. Also, Kittie has found at least a temporary replacement for Trish, whom I'm hoping will be able to address her eating disorder, get better, and rejoin the other girls. What are your thoughts on the Mayhem suggestion?

I haven't heard enough from them to know for sure. Because of the name, they'd at least be a good filler for 2nd stage, but I couldn't call them a headliner without knowing them well enough.

Other bands I thought of as headliners are:

Type O Negative

They're slow, and can be tough to listen to on CD, but for some reason, they're live shows are legalized brutality. The crowd gets crazy, and every song seems to be bigger than the last one.

Apocolyptica

If you've never seen a live video of them, you need to check it out. For just being 4 cello players and a drummer, they go wild onstage, and the crowd is into it. They obviously don't have a singer, so it will all be instrumental, and the crowd can cause real mayhem, and cause some crazy pits.

Beyond The Scar

They'd be a good band for second stage. They've got great stage presence for an up-and-coming band, and there's no way you can listen to them, and not want to let loose. They're great for live shows because of their style (speed-thrash metal), but that doesn't necessarily mean it's great music, so it'd be fun to put them on stage and just get a monster circle pit going.

Ahhh, i see. Well, a little background for ya, then. I unfortunately am not sober enough to do the teachin'. I do however know their wiki page is very accurate. I reccomend checking it out.

Mayhem isn't a big enough name to play at Mayhemfest. The only black metal bands I could see playing on this stage are Dimmu and Cradle of Filth. Black metal just isn't a really popular genre in the States. I'd figure if bands such as Marduk, Astarte, or Satyricon have no chance of playing this show, neither does Mayhem. Besides, Mayhem just hasn't been the same since Euronymous was killed.

I understand where you're coming from, and it saddens me that this is the truth. I've been trying to get more people to listen to them, going as far as visiting my old broadcasting teacher with all of the Mayhem cd's I own, and proceding to upload them onto the stations playlist. I also agree, to a point, on the Euronymous issue. The only thing I see different is, they haven't been the same since Dead's suicide. And the Count's in jail for another 3 years.

OOOOohhh, I just thought of another couple black metal bands that do have the name recognition to be invited. Venom, and Morbid Angel. Any thoughts?

Venom has no chance, their about as Satanic as you can get, even Marylin Manson's lyrics aren't as controversial. Morbid Angel is death metal not black metal, I'd say they'd have a better chance than Meyham because they are from the States, but it might be a bust considering Angel may attract people that just what to hear their old stuff, and not their new stuff.

I see what you're saying about Venom, but Slayer is a headlining band, and they've had their fair share on controversy. I'd like to see Venom do it, but I don't see it happening. I'd really like to see them blow us away, and get Merciful Fate to do the tour, but I'm living in a dream world if that happens.

Normally, when there's a "surprise headliner", it's not someone that will close the show (i.e. A7X on Ozzfest '06), but someone that will keep the crowd going, and get them ready for the main acts. I'd normally include Black Tide, Five Finger Death Punch, or Walls Of Jericho in this group, but they did it last year, and I don't see them using any repeats yet...

I'd like to see Chuck Shuldiner return from the grave and have Death make a comback, but that's living in fantasy. Usually only the more mainstream metal and hard rock acts are in the main event, but that's only because they have more drawing power.

Because of this I wouldn't be surprised to see Disturbed, Slipknot, and possibly Mastodon on the list as well

I'm going to assume this is straight sarcasm, as Disturbed and Slipknot headlined main stage last year, and Mastodon was a headliner on Second Stage :lmao:

Everyone wants to see Slipknot on this year's Ozzfest, so I don't see them going to MayhemFest again, unless Rockstar throws a ton of money at them to bring them back. I don't think it would draw as well as last year, because it's the same material, and probably the same stage show.

Disturbed is probably going to be on their own this summer, as they headlined Ozzfest as recently as 2006, and headlined MayhemFest last year. If Family Values makes a return, they could play there, but they're too big, and too different to do something like that.

I'm not surprised, although I'll be honest and say that I haven't followed Mayhemfest or Ozzfest for a while. I just named those bands because they are popular (however I wouldn't pay to see any of them except for Mastodon)and would probably headline something like Mayhemfest. At this point, being a poor college student, I don't have the money to blow on concerts, and even if I did probably be to lazy to go. However, I am happy to see bands such as Behemoth, Nile, Zyklon, God Dethroned, Necrophagist, Amon Amarth and Arch Enemy getting some much needed recognition.

Behemoth was a headliner on Second Stage at Ozzfest '07 aka FreeFest. Nle was an opening band. I actually think they were the 3rd or 4th band of the day. I had heard of Nile, and was impressed with their live show, and the crowd was really into them. Behemoth, I had never heard of, but was blown away. The drummer did an amazing drum solo, and the entire set was just incredible. Hatebreed came on after them, and to me their set was just as good as Hatebreed, which is big to me, maybe not you.

Another band that was there that caught my ear was Ankla. They were a little unorthodox, but it worked, and they definitely caught the crowd's attention for only being the 2nd band of the day.
