I knew of, nor cared nothing for Mass Effect. I picked up Dragon Age: Origins, because I heard it was supposed to be the "spiritual successor" to Baldur's Gate. After I played DAO I found out that Mass Effect was more or less a sci-fi version of Dragon Age. I was interested, plus Mass Effect 2 was already out by the time I finished with Dragon Age Origins, and Mass Effect 2's buzz was that it was even better than Origins.
So I tried out Mass Effect 1 on my PC. It ran crappy, because I was on a crappy PC at the time, and I got way into it anyways but when I let the Krogan die... god damnit I started all the way over again and I didn't want to do that, so I let it lapse.
A few months later I found ME in the bargin bin at gamestop for the xbox 360 for $10. So I picked that up and tried it on that, and it ran smoothly, and I had a much better time of it, but it still felt like I was slogging through a mediocre game. But I did it.
Then I finally got Mass Effect 2, also for the 360 so I could import. Holy crap. Best. Game. Ever. Unf**kingbelievably awesome. I went back and played ME1 again and had a blast with it the second time because I finally had the culture of the Mass Effect series ingrained in my head to the point where everything made more sense and instead of trying to play the good girl Jane Sheppard, I went with Leroy Sheppard, a badass renegade male Sheppard. I blazed through the first game and loved it, and then the second game again and loved it even more because now I knew I had played by the rules and got the best possible outcome, and this time I didn't care and just wanted to be awesome, and I was.
I will do the same thing with Mass Effect 3 as well, in that I will start with my paragon Jane Sheppard, and beat the game with her playing by the rules, trying to do everything such that I get the "best" possible outcome. Then I will go back and play Leroy and talk smack, kick ass, and screw the galaxy, I'm in it for me. Jane has been a loyal lover to boyscout Kaidan Alenko, and Leroy played Ashley then sent her to her death, screwed Liara T'Soni, and then that bald headed bitch Jack. I can't wait to see how things turn out for these two characters. The battle system looks better than ever, and supposedly all the characters who didn't die are back. And I also read that if you were a cheater, you get your ass beat. lol I can't wait.
Oh, and if you've never played the game. You should probably watch these two movies that show how awesome it is to play Commander Sheppard in Mass Effect, and Mass Effect 2.
